Tis the Season
November 1st 2004, 12:00 CET by Squeaky What games are you looking foreword to this holiday season? I've already posted my wish list, but I'll do so again here because I can: XBox: Guilty Gear X2 #Reload Full Spectrum Warrior SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom Otogi 2 TMNT 2 Halo 2 Prince of Persia: Warrior Within Kingdom Under Fire: the Crusaders Sonic Mega Collection NFS: Underground 2 KOTOR 2 GameCube: Pikmin 2 Paper Mario 2 Mario Tennis Baiten Kaitos Metroid Prime 2 (just for you, YF) Alien Hominid Viewtiful Joe 2 Mario Party 6 Playstation 2: Shadow Hearts: Covenant Kalamari Delicacy Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal Gran Turismo 4 ...not really too sure here. Never really paid attention to PS2 games until yesterday. PC Games: Half Life 2 Rome: Total War Myst IV (not a very long list, what with PC gaming being dead and all) Of course, that's just new(ish) games. There's always a boatload of older games at bargain bin prices. The list also doesn't include new games I already own. Then there's the DS. As much as I am Nintendo's bitch, and as much as I want one, I'm not sure that I'm gonna get it. But stranger things have happened. A year ago, I would've never thought I'd be a console fanb01. Now look at me. So what new games are you looking foreword to this Christmas? Or what older games do you want that you never got around to picking up before? Which unbelievably amazing games do you think will fall through the cracks like last years Beyond Good & Evil? Consumer whores want to know! |

Half Life 2 Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one
I don't usually feel like I'm looking forward to any particular game. Maybe I'm in denial, maybe it's a defensive reaction so I don't have to deal with the longing, but I don't think it's typical that I wait for games to arrive. With that said I've attached significant worth to Half-Life 2*, and, eh, I suppose I'd like to see PoP 2 sooner rather than later. * I am more or less upgrading my computer for that game. Never before, and I hope never again, will I consider a game worth so much money and energy.. except for Half-Life 3. To be, turn to page 73 - from choose your own adventure Hamlet

I'm looking forward to the Pirates! remake, Elder Scrolls IV and Civ4. Also, I'll buy Evil Empire when I hear it has been patched satisfactorily. |
Also, having just played the Guild Wars preview, I have to say I like it. I don't think it's terribly innovative, but it's nice. Pity they're requiring payment, that rules me out. |
Do you mean Evil Genius or is there some other game named Evil Empire I'm not aware of? I'm told that the Evil Genius patch is coming Real Soon Now(tm). Well worth the wait, I'm sure. "You've just defined what's rude for everyone, not just you. Thanks, I needed help with that." - Matt P
Oh yes, Evil Genius. |
I still adore Evil Genius. I've set it aside for the last week because there has been other things demanding my attention and I want the patch, but in no way am I tired of it. At all. While we wait, some of you may enjoy this Flash-based second island planner tool. Not so useful for me, but I can see how it would be right up some people's alleys. I'm looking forward to Gran Turismo IV, for the only reason that Gran Turismo III is about the only game I've played on Playstation 2* and liked... A lot... And I'm not a big racing game fan. GT3 just got everything right, so I'm hoping GT4 does the same, but better. Now all I need is to buy a PS2. On the PC front, I've been let down by far too many games, so I generally just let games happen and see if they live up to the Hype(tm). Which they never do. I guess I'll bite when Morrowind IV comes out, but chances are I won't have a PC capable of running it, since my price range doesn't yet permit me to measure my system in teraflops. The games on my least looking forward to list? Halo 2 and Half-Life 2. From now on if I hear the letter H and the number 2 within a few words of each other, I'm going to go on a pidgeon head-biting rampage that will only end when I see how let down everyone is with both games since they didn't live up to the Hype(tm). * I've played all of about 4 PS2 games. Play Fall of Nations noobs...

Fer sure: Wow Half Life 2 (though I already paid for it) Halo 2 Guild Wars (The writing on the mini map alone sells me on it. Genius.) Maybe: Pirates "She told me to tell you to quit being such an anal-retentive pussy."- Ergo
I am looking forward to HL2. If that turns out well and the userbase shifts I will then be looking forward to the SDK/Hammer release. Fabricated like the word absurditive
Halo 2, PoP2, NFSU2, Metroid Prime 2, Gran Turismo 4, Half Life 2. ALL HAIL THE ALMIGHTY SEQUEL. Do-Re-Mi-Fa-SO-LONG-FUCKER!
I'm looking forward to Half-Life 2 for the game play revolution, Doom3 mission pack, Quake 4 and the PC incarnation of Riddick for the eye candy I guess and Live For Speed S2 for all it promises to be. I'm even planning on buying a wheel for that for Christmas. With growing age, I'm moving towards games providing a quick fix to my gaming needs instead of engaging in long lasting adventures as it might had been the case a couple of years ago, but I'm not even considering going the console way as I'm still spending a fair amount of time behind the PC. |
HL2 is the only game I really, really, really want. But I guess I'd also like to check out Metroid Prime 2 and Katamari Damacy (but this doesn't seem to be coming out in Europe any time soon, alas). I won't be able to avoid Gran Turismo 4. Having played Guild Wars over the weekend, I am tempted to get it, simply because the lack of subscription. However, at the end of the day, I am not interested in most of the features beyond cooperative play. Crafting and all the other obligatory MMRPG baggage is laborious and unsatisfying (as I feel it always is). It all seems a little unecessary, since, with all of the combat being instanced, you never actually meet the unwashed masses except in the towns, and even then interaction isn't essential given that all crafting is performed by NPCs. The presence of the public appears to be largely cosmetic; to give the towns a sense of bustle. |
Behind the PC? Like, making it work? No, in front of the PC should better describe what I meant. |
Halo 2. Yum. Immorality: The morality of those who are having a better time.
GT4 would be lots of fun, but don't think that I could give it the attention that it deserves. Hopefully I'll be getting GTA:SA soon. I hope that MGS3 is good. I think HL2 will have to wait till I get a new computer, about a year away. Hopefully by then Morrowind 4 will be out and I can have a PC good enough to play that. |

Tis the season for endless acronyms. |

Charles is doubly right too, the season for endless sequels. |

Good luck for starting at work at Raven today Caryn. |

Jobs suck, but so does homelessness. |

If you read the topic, you will see that he was clearly asking only for games that come out this year. So stop saying Elder Scrolls 4, bitches. I'll probably buy Ultra Bust-a-Move for the Xbox. HL2 is free. I'll buy Halo 2 if I find out if the single-player is worth it. And I'll probably put some games on my Christmas list. Otherwise, this season is all about the DS. Dood.
#34 BobJustBob Otherwise, this season is all about the DS. For you, yes. For people who don't want to spend $150 on a handheld, no. |
Didn't Sony announce a possible $150 price point for the PSP, too? "Son of a BITCH! The casino security just arrested Px. Oh well." - Yot
PSP's price is just under 200$ in japan. And also, fuck the DS. Nintendo shot themselves in the foot. Now we just wait and see if they bleed to death, or die from gangrene. Do-Re-Mi-Fa-SO-LONG-FUCKER!
And also, fuck the DS. Nintendo shot themselves in the foot. Eh? What did they do? |
It's too complex. Handhelds need to be simple and not have easily loseable parts (stylus). |
First, they made it 3d, which puts them in direct competition with the PSP, both in terms of graphics ability (Where they are obviously inferior), and developer support. Also, making it 3D negates the ability of developers to make quick 2D games with small teams for huge profit returns. Each game will now need a full development team, full development cycle, and full development budget. This is basically Nintendo losing every single benefit that the GBA had. So now they are in direct competition with Sony, when Sony has: Better hardware, better developer perks, and better media hype. Do-Re-Mi-Fa-SO-LONG-FUCKER!
Yes, also, the extra screen with touch screen ability is a gimmick that will most likely be poorly used and obviously gimmicky. On top of that, with great titles like: crappy n64 ports, they really have no strength on software. Do-Re-Mi-Fa-SO-LONG-FUCKER!

Amen to everything Charles said. Nintendo should have held the 2D route with handhelds. For me, 3D on a handheld means huge pixels and overall blockiness, mostly sucky low-poly character / level design and awkward UI with controls which feel inadequate even when done properly. Rot-corpse Sumatran art amuses proctor.

Everyone knows my stance on 2D gaming. It wasn't taken far enough. "Son of a BITCH! The casino security just arrested Px. Oh well." - Yot

It seems to me that Nintendo is cannibalizing their own market with the introduction of the DS. Mac OSX--UNIX For Girls (tm)

I agree with Charles up to a point, but I still think the DS will outsell the PSP by a significant amount. The PSP could cost the same as the DS and the DS would still win with the primary handheld market of children. Parents will continue to pick Nintendo as a more suitable kid-friendly system. Also, Nintendo has shown that even if a system has 3D capabilities, they are willing to release 2D games on it. (Eg. WarioWare, Legend of Zelda Four Swords, Paper Mario, etc for the GameCube), so all is not lost for 2D. In related news, Sony is using EXPOSED OPTICAL DISCS for storage of PSP content! Who the fuck wants to walk around carrying little CDs in their pocket, with their keys and whatever else scratching the fuck out of them? Sure, you can put them in cases, but who wants to deal with the hassle of casing up their games? Not me. Certainly not most kids either. Not to mention the PSPs will prove to be seriously battery deficient unless you turn the backlighting off completely. 2-3 hours or so isn't enough. So, in short, yeah I do think Nintendo should deemphasize the 3D capabilities of the DS, but they are still going to rule the handheld gaming market for the next generation. |
Also... I am so getting that dog game. |
Consumers 'snub portable video' Another reason why the PSP won't be so popular. |
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the PSP disks come in their own hard shelled cartridge? Anyway, I am inclined to accept that the DS might outsell the PSP, but I would not bet on it. Give it two years of sales, and I think the PSP will be on top. First of all, the appeal of the PSP to people with more disposable income will be obvious. Also, the GBA is strong because of the amount of titles it has. But that won't be the case for the DS, since developers won't be able to commit small teams to making them. I think the PSP is going to reach an extended and potentially untapped market, while sucking away from the GBA market by siphoning off all the older players. Do-Re-Mi-Fa-SO-LONG-FUCKER!
Another reason why the PSP won't be so popular. I don't think that's a valid point. The PSP will be strong based on games alone. Everything else is just bonus and marketing points. I certainly don't care about the PSP as a portable movie viewer, and I'm betting that most people interested in it are interested because of its potential as a game device first and foremost. Do-Re-Mi-Fa-SO-LONG-FUCKER!
