The New, Improved, Better-Than-Ever PC Sports Thread
April 21st 2004, 14:58 CEST by BobJustBob

The old sports thread is too long. It's becoming a threat to older, longer, more established threads. Time for a new one. Enjoy.

This thread is sponsored by a secret global conspiracy of game developers that control society.

If you have longer to study the pitch before you have to swing, you're not solving the problem more quickly, you simply have more time.  That you can swing the bat faster gives you more time.

You make it sound like there's a lot of time involved here, when really there's just a couple milliseconds of difference here.  And seeing as how Bonds and many other good hitters can often recognize pitches as soon as it leaves a pitcher's hand, I don't see how the extra 5 milliseconds for "study" helps in those particular situations, which appears to be a majority of the time (for Bonds' case anyway).  I've seen countless at-bats where Bonds would simply give up on a pitch as soon as the pitcher lets the ball go.

I'm not a doctor, but I play one on tv. Everything I have heard about steroids describes them as muscle builders. I wasn't aware that all those obsessive body-builder types were known for their artificially enhanced lightning-fast reflexes. Hulk Smash!

Bonds was a great hitter before.  I think the only thing the roids have given him is more distance on the ball, leading to better power numbers.  I don't buy McBain's argument that it makes him a better hitter.

Slow me just read http://eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=55290 from #119 - #122.  I want to be sure I have this straight.

Doom3 Co-op for XBox?  Right?

But nooo Doom 3 Co-op for PC?  Is this true?

I've heard people on ESPN radio say they've studied slow motion film of Bonds' swing, and he is able to get the bat in the zone fast enough that he has approximately .2 secs to make a decision compared to most players' .12 secs.  Since it only takes the ball .4 seconds to get from pitchers' hand to home plate, that is a big difference.

Fast-twitch muscle is what puts the bat in the zone and fast-twitch muscle is what anabolic steroids enhances.  Obviously he has to start out a great hitter, but the steroids are going to make him super human DO account for some of his "good eye".

Doom 3 will have co-op on the PC, but you need to have the X-Box version of the game in your dvd drive.

I wasn't aware that all those obsessive body-builder types were known for their artificially enhanced lightning-fast reflexes.

Again, this has nothing to do with reflexes.  It has to do with the burst of power that allows him to move the mass of the bat more quickly.  In fact, the muscle enhancement makes it so his reflexes don't have to be as good.

Thanks.  Is D3 coop a mod from the VV guys doing the XBox port?  If so, will it allow true multiplayer network coop?  Or will it be some stupid split screen idiocy?

You had me on the first part, but that last sentence ain't right. If his reflexes aren't as good, then he could have all the muscle mass in the world, he's not going to be better at hitting the ball, just better at hitting it with power.

I've heard that Doom 3 for XBox with support coop over Live.  And yes, it was implemented by the team that did the XBox conversion, so unless id decides to backport it there will be no coop on the PC.

He has more time to react, which means his reflexes can be a bit lesser than other players while still providing huge ball-hitting power.

LP-  I think we're confusing reflexes with motor function.  Reflexes are neurological, they have to do with the ability to react to what is happening (in this case, the quality of the pitch).  Motor function is the speed with which his muscle can move the mass of his arms and his bat.  Since F=ma, the more force his fast-twitch muscle tissue is able output, the greater acceleration.  Since the acceleration of the mass of his arms and bat will be greater, his neurological response to the pitch really doesn't have to be as good.  He has longer to react.

I agree.  Radio DJs have been pimping the holy hell out of that site for the last few weeks.  I can't think of another covert internet ad campaign that's been this successful.  Mini Cooper tried that whole fake robot thing, but it was short-lived and not very interesting.
