Games as a fun creative medium?
April 2nd 2004, 17:36 CEST by Eyegore It's sad to say that the only thing that really does this for me right now is 'The Sims', but I've been bored of that for a long time. Others would be 'Roller Coaster Tycoon' and 'Sim City' except that SimCity is much more micromanagement than creative. Same thing with Railroad Tycoon 3. Grand Theft Auto touches on it with it's 'emergent gameplay' where you can make your own game of trying to get across town by roof surfing cars. I'm a big fan of FPS games but I can only take so much twitch before I look elsewhere. The two games I'm looking forward to most right now are 'The Movies' which I hope will hit the nail on the head for what I'm looking for and of course 'The Sims 2', but is that all there is to look forward to? And isn't it interesting these two big creative games I mentioned (The Sims, Roller Coaster Tycoon) are among the few games that are most popular among women? |

Eyegore, I agree about Rollercoaster Tycoon. I saw a preview of RCT3 on Qt3 which said it would be true 3D and add more realism to the guests (different ages, travelling in groups), but the thing I'm really psyched about is that they're finally going to let you speed up the game. That should've been in RCT2, but better late than never. I've never played the Sims, because while it may not make you gay, it certainly doesn't help. I don't believe the hype about The Movies. If it turns out to not suck, then I'll play it but I suspect that it won't live up to advance billing. |
gaggle You could make movies with Stunt Island too! That's Disney's Stunt Island. Recognize! I'm fighting terrorism by playing violent video games!

To Prostyle #58: I don't know about there not being any games that are "outside the box." I think you see a certain amount of that, especially in console games, but I think that's more because the PC had them all a couple of years ago. I mean System Shock was a complete outside the box game. Same with The Sims, and something like Giants or Sacrifice, even the recent Savage. On consoles/arcades Dance Dance Revolution, Super Monkey Ball (Although it owes something to marble madness.) Wario Ware Mega Microgames, Pikmin, even Mario and Luigi Superstar saga, Jet Set Radio, or ICO. |
Hurrah, yes, apologies to Disney. Man that game had a wacky flightsimulation. |
Oooh...this is the first I've heard about RCT3...I was hoping it would go fully 3D. I'd love to see the 3D first person perspective of my park viewed from the front seat of my rollercoaster. Oh boy. :) I'm a little suprised by the seeming hostility towards my post from some people. Is this the wrong place to talk about game design nowadays? Should I go write a short story and post it in the previous thread to fit in here? |
Let's define outside-the-box. |
Take a box. There is area outside the box. That is known as outside-the-box. -DKI(ID
Disney's Stunt Island was cool, and definately ahead of it's time. A modern remake would be great. |
Is the box filled with gerbils? And outside the box are different gerbils? What about the corners of the box, are they threadbare? What sort of dexterity check must I make to extract a gerbil from the box? |
Why so preoccupied with gerbils. Is your name Jerry? Jerry Penacoli? -DKI(ID
I apologize for the improper punctuation in post #68. -DKI(ID

When I said outside the box I really meant it. A game that you can 'creatively' 'progress' through, already we've said to much. First off, everyones definition of creativity is different. Secondly, progress is arguable from every angle and seeing as how we couldn't even agree on what is creative and what isn't, creative progress is going to be basically impossible. No points, no teams, no red vs blue - just you and your creative ass, solving creative problems in the most creative way. Crater. I'm like a quote out of context...

Eyegore, Yup, you can ride your coasters. That doesn't really interest me, but I can see how it might be cool. I think a lot of people are confused and/or annoyed that you, a n00b, got a story posted on the front page which they didn't see or vote on in the bin. But good job registering a username. Now get yourself an icon you goddamn savage. |
Eyegore, there's no way to fit in here. You can aspire to be hated for more or less specific reasons, but I don't think it's possible to "fit in". From the examples given so far, "creative games" sounds to me like "opended games with little or no timepressure". I like story, and a focus, and something to accomplish. I guess I'm more of a Civilization and Alpha Centauri kind of man. SimCity has enjoyment for hours, but.. the lack of goals makes it difficult to keep interest I think. There are "scenarios" in SimCity though, where you have to make a town in less than blah blah, or stop a fire using only a herring and a shrubbery, but imo it's not enough. Alpha Centaury though, in its story-mode, was almost pure love. ..well, fuck, I don't know where I'm going with this. Was the only pseudo-ontopic thing I could come up with.. Flight Simulator strikes me as another one of those "openended games", but I don't know if anyone would call that a creative game though? |
What kind of shrubbery? |
One that's not too high, and one that's a bit higher, for a nice 2 level effect. -DKI(ID

Technically I may be a noob because I just recently re-registered but I've been lurking here since Quake2 was the shiznit and Andy argued with everyone about everything and GSI was the evil empire bent on world domination. |
I'd sleep with GSI if it would break UBI's heart. For the next time you must redefine something.

I guess I'm more of a Civilization and Alpha Centauri kind of man. Me too. I'll do all sorts of sandboxy things when they're allowed, but for me the difference between a game and a toy is that a game has goals. I like to win. Alpha Centauri is great because there are a number of different ways to win, but it still feels like a competition rather than a dollhouse. In fact, I like it so much that I recently bribed my girlfriend into learning to play so we can try out the multiplayer. |
She hates you for it, and in secret, she is deducting three blowjobs for every one gaming session. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! I'm fighting terrorism by playing violent video games!

Oooh...this is the first I've heard about RCT3...I was hoping it would go fully 3D. I'd love to see the 3D first person perspective of my park viewed from the front seat of my rollercoaster. Oh boy. :) If you're serious, MS (I think?) has a roller coaster sim that does first person. Doesn't have any of the other aspects of RCT though. |
We'll see. I bought her Buffy season 5 and told her before I bought it what the price was. The thing is, she loves playing games but I have to practically break her will every time I want her to try something new. I knew she would like Zoo Tycoon, but I had to learn how to play it so I could teach her to play it, because she wouldn't just sit down and play through the tutorials on her own. So, if it turns out that she doesn't like Alpha Centauri, there may be consequences. However, she likes Space Empires IV (and everything else I've forced her to try) so I'm optimistic. |
Stop bragging about your girlfriends! For the next time you must redefine something.

Yeeeesh...I can feel my eyeballs already threatening to explode just reading about this Quake 2 mod. I was never good with stereograms. "Whether he likes it or not, a man's character is stripped bare at the poker table; if the other players read him better than he does, he has only himself to blame. Unless he is both able and prepared to see himself as others do, flaws and all, he will be a loser in cards, as in life."

Shadarr Does she have a sister, identical in every way aside from the fact you haven't dicked her? My continued existence is purely to spite any sense of fairness in the universe.

#50 LPMiller I agree, though he won't believe it. I also think he's a great game player too. But I think he hates me. Nah, Xero doesn't hate any of you guys. Well maybe one or two. Well maybe a little more than that. Funk. we rocked his butt with a 12 inch cut called disco kryptonite!

Does she have a sister, identical in every way aside from the fact you haven't dicked her? No, but she has a brother who does coke and fathers illegitimate children. Maybe I can set you up. |

I hate being sick, but I hate being sick without explanation most of all. It's freakin' springtime, no one I've been in contact with for the past couple of weeks is sick, and here I am KNOCK KNOCK KNOCKING ON ZOMBIE DOORS! I'm going to start craving brains any minute now, I'm sure of it. I'm fighting terrorism by playing violent video games!

Off topicer- Hellboy- Better than I expected. A good superhero movie. Maybe not the best, but I liked it better than the modern Spider-man flick. Special effects were decently uncheesy and very little if any slow motion (In the era of Matrix clones) oh and props to having a strong second and third act. Stronger than the first at least. Characters manage to be very human, and even though the writing isn't perfect the cast manages to deliver it with enough irony that it works. |
I saw [b[Walking Tall tonight, much better than I expected, and Johnny Knoxville was great in it. I wasn't expecting much from him and he totally rocked in this film. It's paced pretty quick and they do a good job moving the story and kicking maximum ass. |

I like the waaaaaaaaaaay you move... drunk... I like the waaaaaaaaaaaaay you move... Don't blame me, blame digital cable and my wife who won't turn it. Sealed with a curse as sharp as a knife. Doomed is your soul and damned is your life.

Dangerous liasons... I gots the remedy... wtf. Is this the motherfucking spin doctors? Damn. Okay, blame the satlellsite. I'm in hell. Sealed with a curse as sharp as a knife. Doomed is your soul and damned is your life.

Freakin' lightweight. Hulka I saw Knoxville on The Daily Show, and he was fairly entertaining, so I figure I'll see Walking Tall, even after the blarghfest that was Rundown. Just tell me that The Rock doesn't have any secret powers in this one that he doesn't reveal until the Crucial Moment. My continued existence is purely to spite any sense of fairness in the universe.

No he does not. He does have a big stick though, and he knows how to use it. |
