UT2K4 Onslaught vs. Planetside
February 13th 2004, 04:02 CET by Hugin

The first thing I thought after a few rounds of Onslaught was "Boy, this feels like Planetside on amphetamines."

The next thing I thought was...does Epic's explicit "sporting competition" model for the UT games offer advantages over a game like Planetside, which is attempting to model and simulate a "real" (albeit imaginary) conflict?  In Onslaught, both sides have access to the same weapons and vehicles, which makes an intuitive sense in the sports context, and neatly avoids most of the endless complaining about faction balance in Planetside. The critical network nodes are quite exposed, which makes no "real world" defensive sense, but allows for some furious open battling, instead of the sometimes unsatisfying attritional meatgrinder corridor and stairway battles in Planetside.  Overall, by not having to adhere to so many background story/worldbuilding elements to justify the gameplay conventions, is a better game created?  Is the loss of the deeper meaning written into the background story of Planetside and other fictional conflicts, or recreations of historical events like WW2 worth the tighter gameplay? Is the preservation of a planet or a species or a social philosophy, the defeat of evil, etc (even these people and factions are entirely fictitious) a more compelling goal than winning the Space Superbowl?

Would it be impossible to hook players into the MMOG, subscription format if it were merely an elaborate sports league?  Is this all really more about the smaller team sizes more than anything else?  Epic or Sony, who's got the smarter sci-fi war?

When I picked up UT2K4 at Best Buy, I got the last copy they had in the store. It was the regular version. So at least in this instance, they didn't have more CD versions than they needed.

I changed the extention to lower case.  And it seemed that it didn't make a difference on my mac if it was capital or not.  But I believe on windows it is case sensitive.

But, uh, it's the.. the server that would be case sensitive or not, not the client.. surely not the client..

..

My entire world is falling apart fast. But that's hardly a change for the worse.

Could be.  I took the picture, converted it to jpg and uploaded it to .mac from windows.  Would be great if the game took jpg screen shots by default, or at least an option to do so.

How can you all say ut2k4 sux, When it has such a big following. That many people cant be sad and wrong. Fair enough you have your own opinion but to write it off just like that saying "it's going to die" is bollocks. If anything quake is the dying breed not ut, ut has many gametypes to suit the individual not all about n00bish spamming. UT All the way Beatchez.

I was trying to compliment the guy "Death Strike" by saying he is "on the money" which is a saying used to describe someone who is knowledgable about a particular subject.  I'm sure the saying "on the money" spawned from someone who is lucky or knowledgeable about horse racing or betting of some sort.  I craftily hid his own hideous spelling mistakes inside this seemingly harmless compliment thereby creating a veiled insult.

I can't believe the crap I'm hearing about UT2k4, especially from that spam-bot Favicon. 2k4 rocks because
1. It has creative and interesting weaponry.
2.It is a fast paced action-packed game where speed and agility are large factors, making the game seem like a sport.
3.Many game-types enable one to never get bored.
4.Combos and sprees are fucking awesome if you know how to pull them off.
5.ILLEST FUCKING GRAPHICS NEXT TO DOOM3.
6.The announcer voice is fucking badass.
7.UT2k4 is not a spam fest if you know how to play strategically.
8.The shock rifle. I haven't seen a cooler weapon in online gaming.
9.Quick weapon switch allows a player to bind their fav. weapons and switch them rapidly in the middle of a battle to better annihilate their opponent.
10.Adrenaline combos.
11.Dodges and wall jumps.
12.When you kill a guy they go *SPLAT* all over the fucking ground.
13.Headshots.
14.Double kills, multi kills, mega kills, ultra kills, monster kills, ludicrous kills, and holy shit kills.
15.Killing sprees, rampages, dominating's, unstoppable's, godlikes's, wicked sick's.
16.What other game has a lightning gun?
17.Cool characters.
18.Stats.
You can't deny the fact that 2k4 is just the most fun computer game to play all around.

Given your controversial stance on 'no-ramping-difficulty' gameplay, maybe calling it the dumbest idea ever is a bit harsh.

I believe redirecting the nearest river the is traditional method for mucking out animal enclosures.  Although oddly enough I only remember it involving a shovel, a wheelbarrow, and that special form of meditation where you constantly calculate how much you've done/how much you've left to do/how many wheelbarrows each will be and so on and so forth.
