You're all horrible nerds. re: Avatar Icon

Westmoreland: O that we now had here But one ten thousand of those men in England That do no work today! King: What's he that wishes so? My cousin Westmoreland? No my fair cousin. If we are marked to die, we are enow To do our country loss; and if to live, The fewer men, the greater share of honor. God's will! I pray thee wish not one man more. By Jove, I am not covetous of gold, Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost; It grieves me not if men my garments wear; Such outward things dwell not in my desires: But if it be a sin to covet honor, I am the most offending soul alive. No, faith my cousin, wish not a man from England. God's peace! I would not lose so great an honor As one more man methinks would share from me For the best hope I have. Do not wish one more! Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host, That he which hath no stomach to this fight Let him depart; his passport shall be made, And crowns for convoy put into his purse; We would not die in that man's company That fears his fellowship to die with us. This day is called the Feast of Crispian: He that outlives this day, and comes safe home, Will stand a-tiptoe when this day is named, And rouse him at the name of Crispian. He that shall see this day, and live old age, Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbors And say, "Tomorrow is Saint Crispian." Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars, And say, "These wounds I had on Crispin's day." Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot, But he'll remember, with added luster, what feats he did that day. Then shall our names, Familiar in his mouth as household words- Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter, Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester- Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red. This story shall the good man teach his son; And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by, From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remembered- We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he today that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so lowly, This day shall enoble his rank. And gentlemen in England, now abed, Shall think themselves accursed they were not here; And hold their manhoods cheap while any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day Do not go gently into that good night.
Old age should burn and rage at the close of day. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. |

#34 Bailey You're all horrible nerds. Okay, look— (Caryn settles in and points her finger at the crowd) —we are ALL NERDS, BAILEY. Even you. At least once a freakin' week someone here says something to the effect of, "God, I can't believe how geeky/nerdy you guys are" followed by what I can only imagine is a series of self-absorbed snorting in derision. Please, just stop it. Of COURSE we're nerds. We're posting on PC. A forum founded originally to discuss video games. If you are about to make a post that proclaims your fellow posters to be nerds or geeks or nerdy geeks or geeky nerds, stop and think about how you're not the first to say it, and that it's been said a thousand times. Which makes it very tiresome to read over and over again. We're nerds. We know. Move on. Of course, this will likely be dispensed along with the other PC cliches we constantly drag out around here. #48 Bailey Caryn? In the long chances that post was made in anything other than a frivolous jest, please do me the favor: stop taking yourself so seriously, and consider the source. It was partially made in jest. It's still annoying to see it constantly said, no matter who the source. It's beginning to rank up there with "What?" for me. I am in Kyoto

#53 Bailey Hrmmm, repetition on Planetcrap is vexing to you, eh? Well, luckily, I've comprised a short list of some of the offenders here, you can add them to your PLONK list in Opencrap. My point is that just because it's being done doesn't mean we need to continue it. I mean, okay, I'm not taking this that seriously but we're talking about it, so I'll continue the thought. First you tell me to consider the source and let it go because of that, but then you tell me everyone does it so that should be fine. I'm just trying to lobby the lost cause of getting rid of the predictable cliches around here. "What?" and "You're all nerds" are my pet peeves. Hey, I bet I annoy people, too. I don't plonk anyone. I felt like pointing out something we see a lot of here that we don't have to, no matter who's saying it. As Shadarr pointed out, people do that too much on PC, too, me included. So I guess we're even. I am in Kyoto

Clipboard contents: One of the most stunning successes on Old World Underground, "Succexy" takes issue with the political agenda of the U.S. government from a more creative stance than the indie world's typical anti-Bush rhetoric and generalizations. Instead of placing the blame purely on the government, Haines claims, "All we do is talk, sit, switch screens/ As the homeland plans enemies." Slipping between power chords and her own serpentine synth lines, Haines juxtaposes sex and war without sounding lost in her own thoughts. Comment Signature

CtrlV ----------- Seriously, MS is fucking software engr up though. They are commoditizing software development. People think programming means VB these days. All these smarmy MBAs that got laid off from WCOM strut around with entrepreneurial ADHD blathering about how they can whip out "world class solutions" with a $25 buck/hr VB guy or by outsourcing to Mother Russia. And I can't respond because they don't understand having to live with the same code for more than a year. It's all disposable to them. It's worthless! These are the people protecting the future of American software. I can't STAND the whole Martha Stewart Dream MS is selling. Easy perfection. You know what? Perfection is NOT easy. It's hard and it costs people their time, health and families and therefore it's IMPORTANT. It's important to get software right, not just because people SUFFER when software fails, but because we are giving away the industry every time we fail to drive the quality curve. Selling the perception that perfection is easy is setting us up for failure in the long run. Was this supposed to be a rant? I guess I've started ranting here. Might as well finish. It's as if the entire US tech industry is choosing to collectively drop the ball when it comes to software. Software is now a Pop medium where we slap a new name on an old thing and it sells. Just like rock and roll. Funny how all those wasted years we spent dreaming about rock and roll imparted this slow-motion demonstration of how capitalism overpowers art every time. We're just seeing it again in the software biz. Dot NET is Adam Ant redux. Beat to fit, paint to match.

Caryn, and to a lesser extent, Dethstryk, her younger, impressionable sister First you tell me to consider the source and let it go because of that, but then you tell me everyone does it so that should be fine. See, now you're just being intentionally obtuse. I'm just trying to lobby the lost cause of getting rid of the predictable cliches around here. "What?" and "You're all nerds" are my pet peeves. Hey, I bet I annoy people, too. I don't disagree with you, on either count. This very discussion is an old cliche in itself, nearing the point of satire, rendering one taking part in it a contributor to the greater malaise. The problem: people post too much with too little to say. The solution: fresh and engaging discussions, or some act of god. The sad reality: most intelligencia would rather bitch about the philandering of the bourgeoise than actually offer a solution. The end result: bags of dicks for all the armchair Roberta Williamses. Note that "stop doing that" is not a solution unless you can get everyone to agree to stop doing "that". All of this aside, I'm open to suggestions. re: Avatar Icon

My clipboard bit was from the subject line of a level one tech support claim, BTW. We are vexed when we get calls concerning PC's that "won't bute up". And I agree with Caryn, but I've railed about it before. I think the problem will correct itself when some of the regulars just get bored of the damn site and move on, leaving it to lapse into forlorn silence or perhaps be rejuvenated by people who haven't taken place in the same old discussions for the last five years or so. I also still think the submission bin is a failure and the now persistent trolling is getting tiresome. I take it as a sign of boredom that so many of the regulars here engage the trolls, as they (the trolls) rarely have anything amusing or interesting to offer, even in a trollish sense. I'm sure one will read this and respond with some clever riposte. Too bad they'll never get a reply from me, poor little guys. :) "I don't bemoan the great paste" - LPMiller

Or, it could be that it's all just why people actually come here. Because for some things in life, you really don't want change. Not even the people who bitch about it. I mean, people bitch about the same things all the time, but things DO change here. Hardly anyone uses 'What?', including Warren. We've had all sorts of different, neat converstations of late. So naturally, the bitching will start up up as people instantly forget that. I believe I can fly......urk.

I think the problem will correct itself when some of the regulars just get bored of the damn site and move on, leaving it to lapse into forlorn silence Frankly, that idea scares me. The thing I like most about The 'Crap is that it is something of an in-bred community. Its not a place with high turnover (or any turnover to speak of) of members who speak at each other to the point that they never develop a cohesive group of people one could consider friends/dysfunctionally family. While much of the recycled comments are lame, I think they're just as much a part of this site as the superlative discussion. If I wanted a forum where I hold no interest with any of the forum users, I'd spend more time at G4. Duality [bunge shot bonus] +10G

I don't necessarily disagree with that, LP. I wasn't trying to make a blanket statement about PC. And Warren has only given up on "What?" after being hounded about it. But hey, maybe I'm just jealous because I don't have a cool PC catchphrase of my own. I'm open to suggestions. :) <-- and a big fat "phhbttt!" to anyone who finds the emoticon annoying. Bitching is a part of any forum that has a regular crowd. You fall into a rhythm, you get to know the personalities of those who post, you grow comfortable latching onto the same topics. It's how we got The List. And some of the stuff on The List is pretty funny. The nature of PC -- the predictable trolls, whining, personality clashes and often richly entertaining sidetrack discussions (really, the actual meat of the site), is what makes some people leave in disgust only to find themselves coming back a short time later. There's some neat stuff that evolves out of the "anything goes" style of topics that get posted here. Having said that, I don't think it's fair to expect people with complaints to have to qualify their opinions by first admitting to all the wonderful things about PC.
