Video Game Awards?
November 10th 2003, 22:27 CET by ADoomedMarine SpikeTV are holding their first annual Video Game Award show on December 4th, do you think this will lead into a Award show up to par with something like the Oscars? Gaming definitely is turning into a serious profit market like Movies and Music but do you think we would one day see gaming developers participating award shows based solely on Games. |

The original Nebula Device engine is a pretty good example of how one can implement a graphics renderer that can output to either OpenGL or D3D. So you might want to take a look at it for ideas, if you want to go that route. The newer Nebula2 engine, which is high-level shader based (Nebula1 is very much fixed pipeline), is theoretically fairly well abstracted in this regard, but nobody has yet implemented an OpenGL version of the rendering code, as most people seem to be waiting for OpenGL 2.0 to implement such things on that side. Thanks for the info, YF. (and I never thought I'd find myself saying that) You can't derail this train of idiocy, Shadarr. Not even with a big fat cow of logic on the tracks. - Bailey
Neale, if your lead coder isn't competent enough to make a layer of abstraction to make it an easier issue later on, then you should find a new one. christmas is for shopping and the shopping god is everything

Anyone know what song is playing in the ad for the LG picture-phone with the guy and girl stripping? Stupid ad, but the 15 seconds of the song are pretty catchy. |
Charles: When we originally conceived this game, we weren't considering the Xbox, so most of the groundwork has been done with OpenGL as the renderer. I'm leaning on him to abstract things now, to save us hassle later. Besides, when you're developing something off your own finances, finding someone else willing to do the same isn't easy. Remember, it isn't a development team if you haven't rallied to kill at least one member, lord-of-the-flies style. ...like the color of a tv screen tuned to a dead channel.

Well that sucks. BG: Dark Alliance 2 isn't being released for gamecube. Sorry, in order to finish the story you have to buy an XBox or PS2, we don't like gamecube. Fuck That. it's my onion and you can't change it!

gamecube. Fuck That. I agree with what you wrote. "It was fucking RPGotY, fucker!"

I'll admit, I have a Cube and a PS2 and spend far more time playing the Cube. Most of my game time is still spent on the PC, though. Cogite tute.

If I had enough time to game, I feel like my time would be fairly evenly distributed among all three systems, depending on whether I wanted to pay for Live or not. PANZERFAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUST

I have all 3 consoles and a great PC, right now the Xbox gets the most play, with lots of Crimson Skies and Rainbow Six 3 play lately (and this will continue in the near future as I play through both Legacy of Kain: Defiance and POP: Sands of Time.. should be done with both just in time to pick up Ninja Gaiden!). Gamecube is second. PS2 dead last. Comment Signature

As long as we are playing fanboi: I love my gamecube. Zelda made me cry of nostalgia. *sigh*
I'm in YF's position but I spend most of my time lately on the PC. Though I will be picking up Mario Party 5 tomorrow so that's where my weekend will go. I don't really use my XBox at all though since I don't have Live and I am waiting for KOTOR to be released on the PC. I should really check out Crimson Skies though... The only reason the PS2 is dead last is because it is so old now. It was the must have console for the last two years. |
As long as we are playing fanboi: I love my gamecube. Zelda made me cry of nostalgia. Zelda just made me cry. If I wanted a sailing simulator, I would have bought a sailing simulator. I kid cause I care.

Mario Party 5. Mario Party is the only reason why I am considering getting a Gamecube again. Those games are pure brilliance, especially if you play them with other people. sunny days have funny ways of quieting the roar
Since I don't even play PC games online, Live isn't much of a draw for me. But if they ever come out with the rumoured Shadowrun XBox game (and it doesn't suck) I'll be all over it like dirt on a hippie. MarioParty 5 hits tomorrow? I'm almost tempted to not wait for the Zelda bundle. |
Mario Party 5 was released on Tuesday. I've just been busy. |

#87 But... It's zelda. No serieusly: what's the difference between walking from one town to another or sailing? *sigh*

And don't forget the Zelda bundle. Buy any 2 of Mario Party 5, Mario Kart: Double Dash, and Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga (I hate subtitles) and you get Zelda, Zelda 2, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask for free. Dood.

Wow. That's almost like getting repeatedly anally raped by a large man named Leon. I believe I can fly......urk.

When the Zelda bundle hits, they're letting current owners of the GC get in on it without buying a new GC. You have to register your 'cube and 2 of the titles there, and probably pay for shipping. |
#97 Shadarr When the Zelda bundle hits, they're letting current owners of the GC get in on it without buying a new GC. You have to register your 'cube and 2 of the titles there, and probably pay for shipping. Seriously, where is this...who's offering this? PANZERFAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUST

Nintendo is. (Relevant info at bottom.) Dood.

#87 But... It's zelda. No serieusly: what's the difference between walking from one town to another or sailing? The fact that the sailing took forever (yes even with the warping) and was boring as hell. I really liked the rest of the game, it's really just the amount of time you spend in the boat sailing in a straight line that turned me off of it. Pointing your boat and holding a button for 10 to 20 minutes isn't my idea of fun. I kid cause I care.
Funny, because the sailing is the least offensive part of the game to me. Anytime you're on land, the game sucks. Dood.

Wind Waker consists of one long, boring, unskippable cutscene animation, broken up by perhaps an hour of gameplay. "It was fucking RPGotY, fucker!"

I call dead thread for hardware question. My cable modem has stopped working upstairs. I took the modem downstairs and plugged it into the living room coax and it connects in a second. Upstairs its a no go. Of course it sounds like a wiring problem but my issue is that upstairs I also have digital cable and that works fine. I get all my channels including the 10 HBO's. WTF? I took the coax that was going into the cable box and plugged that into my modem. Tomorrow I'll try the wall jack directly (there is still a splitter in the way) but I am not optimistic since I tried the cable outlet in the spare bedroom and that failed. Any ideas? Cable was working fine until a couple of days ago. To reiterate I notice no issues with the TV. |
Splitters are bad ju-ju for cable routers. "It was fucking RPGotY, fucker!"
No router, the modem itself. Plus this has been working since Feb. Also the other bedroom did not use a splitter. |
A cable "modem" isn't a modem. "It was fucking RPGotY, fucker!"
I know, it's a bridge, and a shitty one at that. |
Dude your hardware is broken. The easiest way to get it working again is to fix it. /me high-fives <insert recently deceased celebrity here>
Genius I tell you , genius. |
A 'modem' is anything that modulates and demodulates a signal. By golly, a cablemodem does do this. At the hardware level, at least. From a networking perspective its a frankenstein combination of a nic/bridge/hub/router/SNMPagent. But to joe-compaq, its all good. ...like the color of a tv screen tuned to a dead channel.
I was wrong. "It was fucking RPGotY, fucker!"

Surprising! sunny days have funny ways of quieting the roar

Cheesy My cable modem has stopped working upstairs. I took the modem downstairs and plugged it into the living room coax and it connects in a second. Upstairs its a no go. We have almost exactly the same problem at home. The cable modem is on the attic (where my dad's work/computer room is) and connected to the cable entry in the living room by a 10 meter long coax. Most of the time it works ok but there are these completely random moments where it chooses to not connect. If I take it downstairs and plug it in there with a spare short coax, it always works fine. It might have something to do with the cable end (try making a new end, because any damage or wear can cause signal loss) or it might have something to do with interference due to any electric apparatus the cable comes close to on its way from downstairs to the attic. Electroclash=love

Solution: Wireless. Plug your cable modem into the wall directly with a short cord, then plug it into a Wireless router. Or get DSL. It doesn't suck as much. Win. PANZERFAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUST
The suckiness of DSL vs cable is pretty much a crapshoot. It totally depends on where you live, who the providers are, where on the grid you happen to fall and even the quality of the wiring in your own house. For some cable is better for others DSL is, the only way to really know is to try them both. I kid cause I care.

#111 jafd I was wrong. Again. Respawn Games

Weird.. sometimes I get Warren Marshall and sometimes I get Warren Marshall It's crazy! with your teeth to your lips and your head to the ground
hear the fish and they're makin' this sound sayin' "we just wanna go walkin' around, feel what it's like to fall down" |

What #115 said. Cable vs Dsl discussions are of the worst kind. Even console or quake/unreal discussions don't get as retarded as those. *sigh*
#118 E-ph0nk What #115 said. Cable vs Dsl discussions are of the worst kind. Even console or quake/unreal discussions don't get as retarded as those. Indeed. In my personal experience, cable was the one I had major problems with. DSL had no such issues. Your mileage may (and will) vary. Try both, then decide. PANZERFAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUST
Cable vs. DSL is very much YMMV, agreed. Personally, near me, cable is MUCH better. The ping is about 5-10 ms slower, but the download speed is about 4 times more. Actualy tested download speed. If you believe the DSL company here (Verizon), they download faster than Comcast. I'm the spoon
In my area, cable is definitely king, in both ease of setup and speed-to-cost ratio. |
