Video Game Awards?
November 10th 2003, 22:27 CET by ADoomedMarine SpikeTV are holding their first annual Video Game Award show on December 4th, do you think this will lead into a Award show up to par with something like the Oscars? Gaming definitely is turning into a serious profit market like Movies and Music but do you think we would one day see gaming developers participating award shows based solely on Games. |

Tommy Tallarico debases us all by sheer merit of his existence. re: Avatar Icon

Those of you interested in speed runs, ala Quake Done Quick, you might be interested in this. Someone has managed to pull off a 100% playthrough of the game in a mere 1 hour 37 minutes. Apparently, speed runs are a pretty big thing in the Metroid Prime community. "Because apparently, Link should be visiting strippers and getting his rocks off every time he blows the magic flute." - LPMiller
Speed runs have always been big in the series since Metroid II. This is one of those exceptions that proves that people sometimes *are* willing to play through a game repeatedly for multiple endings. PANZERFAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUST

I had never heard of Tommy Tallarico until this morning. Now that I know who he is, I want to kill Jibble. "YES!! You see people, THAT'S why he's the Vice-President of A/V Services here at Respawn Games. Yotsuya ALWAYS unleashes the fucking fury!" - Warren Marshall

I got number 37, what did you get Yotsuya? |

1! But I traded with jafd to get it. "YES!! You see people, THAT'S why he's the Vice-President of A/V Services here at Respawn Games. Yotsuya ALWAYS unleashes the fucking fury!" - Warren Marshall

Luckily my system of serving people with said numbers only pays attention to those with even prime numbers greater than 2. PANZERFAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUST

This thread seems to have died a death, so I'll go for a mini-hijack. Have any of you devs heard anything about OpenGL working on the Xbox? I'm trying to find any details, but it's all very sketchy. You can't derail this train of idiocy, Shadarr. Not even with a big fat cow of logic on the tracks. - Bailey
It uses a customized direct3d that was based of d3d 8. Not open gl. There is no mention of open gl in any form in any of the developer docs. christmas is for shopping and the shopping god is everything

I found this old interview with Carmack: IGN Xbox: What do you think are the chances of Microsoft actually supporting OpenGL on the Xbox, and why? JC: Last I heard, Nvidia was going to be providing OpenGL for it. I know that MS obviously aren't providing an OpenGL implementation for the Xbox, but is it possible is what I'm asking I guess. You can't derail this train of idiocy, Shadarr. Not even with a big fat cow of logic on the tracks. - Bailey
Well, it's this kind of reason why NVIDIA is falling behind. "Be involved in the DX9 spec? Heavens, no! We'll jump in later, and let ATI do all of the important st... oh, shit." sunny days have funny ways of quieting the roar

I know that MS obviously aren't providing an OpenGL implementation for the Xbox, but is it possible is what I'm asking I guess. Of course it is possible. For a while, SciTech was pushing an OpenGL-on-top-of Direct3D wrapper on the PC. And the Tribes2/Torque engine has a GL->D3D wrapper built in so you can run it on D3D drivers, even though the code is OpenGL. Neither are full, up-to-data implementations that support things like VBOs and register combiners/shaders, but they show it is possible from a technical perspective. I haven't heard of anything similar that is an official Xbox middleware product... I have heard various reports like the one above that Nvidia was planning on supplying a native OpenGL implementation for Xbox, but I've never heard it mentioned outside the context of Doom3, so if you aren't John Carmack you may be SOL. Why the question, anyway? Why do you want OpenGL for XBOX? Comment Signature

Neale- I'm curious- what would be the point of using OpenGL on an XBox? "YES!! You see people, THAT'S why he's the Vice-President of A/V Services here at Respawn Games. Yotsuya ALWAYS unleashes the fucking fury!" - Warren Marshall

Simple because we're developing a game and our engine is OpenGL. At some point, we'd like to do an Xbox version, and not having to rewrite the renderer to use DirectX would help. You can't derail this train of idiocy, Shadarr. Not even with a big fat cow of logic on the tracks. - Bailey

Abstract the renderer interface and implement it in both OpenGL and D3D. Or just drop OpenGL unless you're planning on porting to Mac or Linux (which makes little financial sense in any case). D3D9 is so much nicer. Comment Signature
And D3D8 is less nicer than D3D9 but still much nicer than any version of OpenGL. Comment Signature

Well, our lead coder is a rabid OpenGL lover, so dissuading him could be difficult. I like your first suggestion though. You can't derail this train of idiocy, Shadarr. Not even with a big fat cow of logic on the tracks. - Bailey

The original Nebula Device engine is a pretty good example of how one can implement a graphics renderer that can output to either OpenGL or D3D. So you might want to take a look at it for ideas, if you want to go that route. The newer Nebula2 engine, which is high-level shader based (Nebula1 is very much fixed pipeline), is theoretically fairly well abstracted in this regard, but nobody has yet implemented an OpenGL version of the rendering code, as most people seem to be waiting for OpenGL 2.0 to implement such things on that side. Thanks for the info, YF. (and I never thought I'd find myself saying that) You can't derail this train of idiocy, Shadarr. Not even with a big fat cow of logic on the tracks. - Bailey

Neale, if your lead coder isn't competent enough to make a layer of abstraction to make it an easier issue later on, then you should find a new one. christmas is for shopping and the shopping god is everything

Anyone know what song is playing in the ad for the LG picture-phone with the guy and girl stripping? Stupid ad, but the 15 seconds of the song are pretty catchy. |
Charles: When we originally conceived this game, we weren't considering the Xbox, so most of the groundwork has been done with OpenGL as the renderer. I'm leaning on him to abstract things now, to save us hassle later. Besides, when you're developing something off your own finances, finding someone else willing to do the same isn't easy. You can't derail this train of idiocy, Shadarr. Not even with a big fat cow of logic on the tracks. - Bailey

Remember, it isn't a development team if you haven't rallied to kill at least one member, lord-of-the-flies style. ...like the color of a tv screen tuned to a dead channel.

Well that sucks. BG: Dark Alliance 2 isn't being released for gamecube. Sorry, in order to finish the story you have to buy an XBox or PS2, we don't like gamecube. Fuck That. it's my onion and you can't change it!

I'll admit, I have a Cube and a PS2 and spend far more time playing the Cube. Most of my game time is still spent on the PC, though. Cogite tute.

If I had enough time to game, I feel like my time would be fairly evenly distributed among all three systems, depending on whether I wanted to pay for Live or not. PANZERFAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUST

I have all 3 consoles and a great PC, right now the Xbox gets the most play, with lots of Crimson Skies and Rainbow Six 3 play lately (and this will continue in the near future as I play through both Legacy of Kain: Defiance and POP: Sands of Time.. should be done with both just in time to pick up Ninja Gaiden!). Gamecube is second. PS2 dead last. Comment Signature

As long as we are playing fanboi: I love my gamecube. Zelda made me cry of nostalgia. *sigh*
I'm in YF's position but I spend most of my time lately on the PC. Though I will be picking up Mario Party 5 tomorrow so that's where my weekend will go. I don't really use my XBox at all though since I don't have Live and I am waiting for KOTOR to be released on the PC. I should really check out Crimson Skies though... The only reason the PS2 is dead last is because it is so old now. It was the must have console for the last two years. |

As long as we are playing fanboi: I love my gamecube. Zelda made me cry of nostalgia. Zelda just made me cry. If I wanted a sailing simulator, I would have bought a sailing simulator. I kid cause I care.

Mario Party 5. Mario Party is the only reason why I am considering getting a Gamecube again. Those games are pure brilliance, especially if you play them with other people. sunny days have funny ways of quieting the roar
Since I don't even play PC games online, Live isn't much of a draw for me. But if they ever come out with the rumoured Shadowrun XBox game (and it doesn't suck) I'll be all over it like dirt on a hippie. MarioParty 5 hits tomorrow? I'm almost tempted to not wait for the Zelda bundle. |
Mario Party 5 was released on Tuesday. I've just been busy. |
