Video Game Awards?
November 10th 2003, 22:27 CET by ADoomedMarine SpikeTV are holding their first annual Video Game Award show on December 4th, do you think this will lead into a Award show up to par with something like the Oscars? Gaming definitely is turning into a serious profit market like Movies and Music but do you think we would one day see gaming developers participating award shows based solely on Games. |

#5 Neo-Reaper Considering the main draw with mainstream award shows are the celebrities, I do not forsee video game awards ever coming close. Oh c'mon.. they could have Cliffy T in his bunny suit. Talk about the funny! I'm laughing hard now. And, get this, the Americana McGees comes on and he's like, No', it's the Americans McGees Video Spike TV now mo'fukas.. ANd Broussard can tell us the b estest places to get food and what coupons are the best for value meal.. His catch phrase would be "Value Size This Bitch" and he's shake his man-boobies. The possibliltyes are endless... 'sup Joker "..and Trolly McTroll is the best name EVER. I laugh every time I see it." - ZEP
" If i ever have a daughter, I'm going to name her Trolly. - The_Joker "Fuck are you stupid. Kiwi is a bird. Fucking moron. " - lwf |

The nominees are stupid. How is it that AO and PlanetSide are the only MMOGs to make it into the Most Addictive? DOAXBV is nominated for Sports GOTY but not FIFA? |
|
obviously, they've got a very loose definition of the term 'sports'. Electroclash=love

SpikeTV Video Game Awards. Come on, don't pretend this is something it ain't just so you can complain about how highbrow it's never going to be. It's going to be an eyeroll generator for true video game professionals/fans. What it will hopefully do is increase the video game market. Shoving video games in front of fresh faces and in a new light: It's not kidstuff, it's MANSTUFF. Heh, we take that for granted, but the HUMANS who live on this planet don't see it that way yet. SpikeTV will get some cheap programming and the video game industry will get some credibility/exposure and Planetcrap will get an annual thread of banal hilarity. THAT's what the SpkeTV Video Game Awards means to you. Beat to fit, paint to match.

do you think this will lead into a Award show up to par with something like the Oscars Absolutely. It would be impossible not to. Dood.

Also, why did you randomly capitalize words? Inquiring minds want to know. Dood.

The only important (by important I mean well known enough to even be worth discussing) awards in the gaming world are the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences awards (Interactive Achievement Awards) and the International Game Developers Association awards (Game Developers Choice). And then of course there is the Independent Games Festival. The flagship awards show is the AIAS one. The AIAS have been around for five years and have already arguably become tainted by the perception of bias (Sims Online winning best online game last year/EA sweeping awards, etc.). Lately the AIAS have also tried to reposition themselves more like the Oscars, with celebrity presenters and more focus on their media image. And if your name isn't Cliffy B you probably don't like this shift in focus. So right now the AIAS awards are about on the same level as the Adult Entertainment Awards. The IGDA Game Developers Choice awards however, are very well respected and are modelled after the Oscars however without the intense lobbying. They are young and haven't really figured out what their categories should be or how everything should work, but in my opinion they are the best shot at a dignified and fair awards show. They also have a more international focus which I think will only become more important since the videogame industry is not as North American centric as the film industry. Right now they are equivalent to the National Book Awards. The book award show is televised as well (usually on C-SPAN 2's BookTV), but they aren't at all like the Oscars. Instead they are trade focused but with style and keynote speakers that give it a slight mass appeal. The IGF awards are more like Sundance or Cannes, or really more like Slamdance because people actually care about Cannes et al. This is because they have a festival atmosphere and focus, and because the entrance requirements ensure that published games cannot win the awards. Right now the IGF has been around for five years but are well respected (as respected as the IF awards for example) though they don't really have a show. As a result they aren't really a contender for an industry-wide awards show (let alone a mainstream awards show). So now we have this new entrant which is for all intents and purposes a MTV Movie Awards show or a People's Choice Awards show. Meaning there is minimal industry involvement and little or no real criteria for determining nominees and winners outside of popular opinion and/or marketing dollars. Not to mention even more ludicrous and useless categories than the aforesaid MTV Movie Awards' categories. Most developers are probably very dubious and even indignant about this awards show, though I am sure that publishers and the ESA are pleased with the prospect of a nationally televised awards show. The thing is though, why do game awards shows need to be televised or to be more like the Oscars? The Oscars were not broadcast (via radio) for the first fifteen years, but were private awards ceremonies like the above gaming awards shows. Most industry shows are held the same way, and at best receive coverage only on C-SPAN or some niche cable channel (e.g. Fashion TV etc.). And why should the game industry be any different? Simply because it is a visual medium? Or because it along with books, music, and movies are all lumped together under the label of "entertainment"? In my mind games are philosophically and technically closer to board games, card games, pen & paper games then they are to books, music or movies. |

I look forward to the onstage kiss between Killcreek and Hellchick. |

Well the positive side of these awards is that they will increase the number of games that can issue "GOTY Award" editions, since there is a huge lack of such right now. Comment Signature

IGDA and AIAS awards are neither one really overly respected. The problem being their method of getting games nominated and such have nothing to do with whether or not the games deserve respect and nomination as much as is game X's developer a member of the AIAS/IGDA? If not, good luck getting a nomination (this is especially true of the AIAS, from what I understand). If this practice does not change, best of luck having either of them be overly respected by anyone who has a clue how the systems work. Don't say 'God Damn'.
Say 'Fuck'. |

So I just watched last night's Simpsons. Homer crashes their car into the police station and Wiggum says "Luckily all you hit were bricks, mortar, and lawyers" and it cuts to a lawyer lying crushed beneath a tire. Before he dies, he says "Remember me... as a drain on society". And I thought of G-Man, as I'm sure you all did. Dood.
|
|
Not me, since I managed to forget to watch the show last night. Curses. "Dream of me... and maybe, just maybe, this nightmare will end."
|

Sadly, I thought of G-Man. Also, I hear Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is going to be GotY Platinum Golden Edition Elite. Tommy Tallarico said so. re: Avatar Icon

Being the 'first' network for men...I'm thinking that the only category they need to concern themselves with, and probably the only one they are qualified to judge would be booth-babes. |

Computer-in-a-computer idea gains ground Interesting stuff, though they switch back and forth between machine emulation and combining machines into one big processor with reckless abandon. I'd like to play with some Linux server stuff on my 2003 box. Plus, it reminds me that I needed to look up how to do redundant servers. I read somewhere that it's possible to have, for example, a five machines all mirroring each other acting as a mail server, with the same IP address, so that if one goes down, it will seamlessly switch to another one of the machines. That just seems like all kinds of fuckery when it comes to actually setting it up, but it sounds fun. sunny days have funny ways of quieting the roar

Ah, now you're interested in Linux, but when I was singing its praises last week you were all like "Linux?! No fucking way dude!" and now you're all like "yeah, linux, yeah I could get with that." I've got your number pal. "You know you are doing art when everyone has an opinion of what you're doing." - Lexx, creator of the supremely stupid Doom for Columbine mod.

#30 deadlock Ah, now you're interested in Linux, but when I was singing its praises last week you were all like "Linux?! No fucking way dude!" and now you're all like "yeah, linux, yeah I could get with that." I've got your number pal. You sound almost happy that they're bastardizing Linux by using it in Windows... PANZERFAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUST

#29 I went to a demonstration by MS about it a few months ago... It looked really neat. They had a windows XP running inside Windows 2003 server, so they could test some serverconfigurations from the virtual client. It was all still beta, but seemed to work quite stable. *sigh*
|
|
That's essentially how cluster servers work, isn't it? From what I've seen, the only real difference is that clustered servers have separate IPs, but (in the case of Windows clusters) share one common UNC. |
|
Well I think it is nice that you have all suddenly discovered VMWare/VirtualPC etc. Welcome to 1999. |

Considering the new additions to the software, and how it ACTUALLY WORKS NOW, I think the '99 version wasn't really notable. PANZERFAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUST

HOT THREAD!! Man, even the hijack sucks. |

I like the sound of cluster servers. Though, are there many applications out there that can take advantage of cluster servers and do load balancing? sunny days have funny ways of quieting the roar

The only game awards that have any veneer of credibility are the ones handed out by the major PC gaming mags but they're in magazines, not on TV and reading is icky. Or something. "I don't bemoan the great paste" - LPMiller

Unless you're rendering 3D movies or tryign to balance huge loads on a server, you're better off not bothering with any of that nonsense. PANZERFAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUST

Jibble: Considering the new additions to the software, and how it ACTUALLY WORKS NOW, I think the '99 version wasn't really notable. Ironically (particularly given what you said in #31 about running Linux inside Windows), I've been experimenting with VMWare on the Linux partition of my laptop for the past day or two. I was trying to use it to boot my Windows partition from within Linux; unfortunately, it's an oldish laptop (P3 ~700Mhz, 64Mb RAM) so the VMWare performance isn't great. I was surprised how bad it was though, because around two years ago I did the same thing with whatever version of VMWare was out then and it ran quite acceptably (on the same laptop). Those of you interested in speed runs, ala Quake Done Quick, you might be interested in this. Someone has managed to pull off a 100% playthrough of the game in a mere 1 hour 37 minutes. Apparently, speed runs are a pretty big thing in the Metroid Prime community. "Because apparently, Link should be visiting strippers and getting his rocks off every time he blows the magic flute." - LPMiller

Speed runs have always been big in the series since Metroid II. This is one of those exceptions that proves that people sometimes *are* willing to play through a game repeatedly for multiple endings. PANZERFAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUST

I had never heard of Tommy Tallarico until this morning. Now that I know who he is, I want to kill Jibble. "YES!! You see people, THAT'S why he's the Vice-President of A/V Services here at Respawn Games. Yotsuya ALWAYS unleashes the fucking fury!" - Warren Marshall

This thread seems to have died a death, so I'll go for a mini-hijack. Have any of you devs heard anything about OpenGL working on the Xbox? I'm trying to find any details, but it's all very sketchy. You can't derail this train of idiocy, Shadarr. Not even with a big fat cow of logic on the tracks. - Bailey
|

It uses a customized direct3d that was based of d3d 8. Not open gl. There is no mention of open gl in any form in any of the developer docs. christmas is for shopping and the shopping god is everything
|
|
I found this old interview with Carmack: IGN Xbox: What do you think are the chances of Microsoft actually supporting OpenGL on the Xbox, and why? JC: Last I heard, Nvidia was going to be providing OpenGL for it. I know that MS obviously aren't providing an OpenGL implementation for the Xbox, but is it possible is what I'm asking I guess. You can't derail this train of idiocy, Shadarr. Not even with a big fat cow of logic on the tracks. - Bailey
