FREE LESLIE!
October 23rd 2003, 01:39 CEST by Caryn You may have wondered why Leslie hasn't been around recently. I did, too, and was lucky enough to get an update from a friend of his: Leslie overstayed his visa, and during his attempt to get a new visa, was turned over to the INS at the Canadian border, and is now being held in a cell by the Department of Homeland Security. His friend Erik has put up a blog to keep his friends posted about Leslie's status, and has provided an address where his friends can send him letters, books, and the like. It looks like Leslie will be deported back to Australia sometime around the first week of November. In the meantime, it would be cool to send him some encouraging words. |

THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE! |
Who's Leslie? Hurry up and wring me out, even if my legs are tangled, they can go much further than before.
Glad to see Homeland Security is out there protecting us! Those damned Aussies are so unpredictable. "I keep trying to read your posts, but all the letters keep morphing into "HULAHGUALGHUAALHAGH". Perhaps I can file this as a bug." --Bailey

Wny do I find this to be cosmically ironic? "YES!! You see people, THAT'S why he's the Vice-President of A/V Services here at Respawn Games. Yotsuya ALWAYS unleashes the fucking fury!" - Warren Marshall
I wonder if he will have many wacky stories to tell once he gets back down under and online again. Dood.
I dunno, wny? Hurry up and wring me out, even if my legs are tangled, they can go much further than before.
Honestly, it's Leslie's fault for not taking care of this sooner, especially in this post-9/11 day and age. I wish him well, but, where's the personal responsibility? "YES!! You see people, THAT'S why he's the Vice-President of A/V Services here at Respawn Games. Yotsuya ALWAYS unleashes the fucking fury!" - Warren Marshall
#6 Don't make me go Ng Yo on you, Baily. "YES!! You see people, THAT'S why he's the Vice-President of A/V Services here at Respawn Games. Yotsuya ALWAYS unleashes the fucking fury!" - Warren Marshall
#7 sounds harsher than I want it to. "YES!! You see people, THAT'S why he's the Vice-President of A/V Services here at Respawn Games. Yotsuya ALWAYS unleashes the fucking fury!" - Warren Marshall
Cao ni ma, yotsuya. Hurry up and wring me out, even if my legs are tangled, they can go much further than before.
Chingas tu madre, Baily. Yu tu papa tambien. "YES!! You see people, THAT'S why he's the Vice-President of A/V Services here at Respawn Games. Yotsuya ALWAYS unleashes the fucking fury!" - Warren Marshall
Oh for fucks sake yot, just say you feel bad for him and move on. I'm quite sure he knows what is his fault and what isn't without you pointing it out like a snooty old lady with too much time on you hands. Besides, last I checked, Australia was in the coalition of the willing. I believe I can fly......urk.
Generally I'll always take the anti-Ashcroft stance, but here's me not really caring one way or another. If I were living in a foreign country, I'd always be sure to keep my paperwork up to date or go back home. That's how it works, both here in America and elsewhere in the world. "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me."
Unless of course, #7 sounds harsher then you meant it to. Sorry, been on a bit of an emotion rollercoaster this week. That time of the month. I believe I can fly......urk.
I've heard a lot of stories from people who get caught without a visa solely because the bureaucracy takes so long to churn through the process. |
LP- Let me give you a big fat sweaty confident heterosexual man hug. Besides, I kinda posted #7 as a discussion point, because really, what is this thread about? 200 posts of "Bummer, man"? "YES!! You see people, THAT'S why he's the Vice-President of A/V Services here at Respawn Games. Yotsuya ALWAYS unleashes the fucking fury!" - Warren Marshall
Conspiracy! Hurry up and wring me out, even if my legs are tangled, they can go much further than before.
Overstay your visa, get put in a cell. Yeah, sounds reasonable... I had a long rant all typed up, about the hypocrisy of supposedly free markets and global villages - but never mind. Turn out the light, bolt the door.
I ain't going out there no more. |
Never do! Hurry up and wring me out, even if my legs are tangled, they can go much further than before.
Overstay your visa, get put in a cell. ...As opposed to other countries where you overstay your visa and they throw you a big party... "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me."
You'd think if someone's visa was over, and he wanted out of the country, they'd let him go. How many it had cost in the amassing, what blood and sorrow, what good ships scuttled on the deep, what brave men walking the plank blindfold, what shot of cannon, what shame and lies and cruelty, perhaps no man alive could tell.
I mean, that's the whole point, right? How many it had cost in the amassing, what blood and sorrow, what good ships scuttled on the deep, what brave men walking the plank blindfold, what shot of cannon, what shame and lies and cruelty, perhaps no man alive could tell.
YF, Must be so easy being you. I never said anything about USA, or other countries, I said it sucks in general. Now sit down, shut up - we're talking grown up-stuff here. Turn out the light, bolt the door.
I ain't going out there no more. |
When I was in China, there were repeated dire warnings and signs stating that losing my visa or allowing it to expire would have ambiguous, non-deportation consequences. Hurry up and wring me out, even if my legs are tangled, they can go much further than before.
#21 Charles You'd think if someone's visa was over, and he wanted out of the country, they'd let him go. Leslie wanted to stay in the US. "I'll sell you the idea for $50,000 and you can go from game developer zero to game developer hero." - Leslie
Yeah, I thought he did...in fact, didn't he want to become a citizen? I imagine that concept might be right out the window now. I believe I can fly......urk.
He was trying to reenter from Canada then? I took it to mean he was trying to leave for Canada when they picked him up. How many it had cost in the amassing, what blood and sorrow, what good ships scuttled on the deep, what brave men walking the plank blindfold, what shot of cannon, what shame and lies and cruelty, perhaps no man alive could tell.
If he really wanted to be a citizen, he should have saved the anti-establishment, anti-WTO, Jesus-mocking stuff he posted all over the web until after he became one. Don't misunderstand, I'm not towing the line of "the man" or giving some kind of redneck "love it or leave it" speech, since I agree with a lot of his views on these topics... I'm just talking about practicality here. "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me."
I remember how he didn't like turkish coffee. "All things fall and are built again,
And those that build them again are gay." (W. B. Yeats) |
Caryn- Do you have more details? What was he doing at the Canadian border? "YES!! You see people, THAT'S why he's the Vice-President of A/V Services here at Respawn Games. Yotsuya ALWAYS unleashes the fucking fury!" - Warren Marshall
Yeah I thought he lived in Portland. He's in Seattle now. it was worth it just to learn some slight of hand
For whatever reason, Leslie was going to Canada to attempt to get a visitor's visa, and that's when Canada turned him into the INS when they learned he'd overstayed his last visa and his employer hadn't renewed it. I'm not sure why he was going to Canada to do it, but I'm guessing there were reasons. "I'll sell you the idea for $50,000 and you can go from game developer zero to game developer hero." - Leslie
So once again, Canadia is to blame. Tssk tssk. Perhaps it is time for Operation Northern Parking Lot after all. Turn out the light, bolt the door.
I ain't going out there no more. |
Thanks, Caryn. That's interesting that he would need to go to Canada. I assume he was trying to get a Canadian vistors visa. That allows him to stay in the US? "YES!! You see people, THAT'S why he's the Vice-President of A/V Services here at Respawn Games. Yotsuya ALWAYS unleashes the fucking fury!" - Warren Marshall
Well, he was living in Oregon. My guess was that he was just trying whatever he could possibly do to stay in North America at all and work his way permanently into the US. "I'll sell you the idea for $50,000 and you can go from game developer zero to game developer hero." - Leslie
What did he do? Is it the employer's responsibility help with a work visa? "YES!! You see people, THAT'S why he's the Vice-President of A/V Services here at Respawn Games. Yotsuya ALWAYS unleashes the fucking fury!" - Warren Marshall
Maybe he lost his job. it was worth it just to learn some slight of hand
Hopefully we will have a shrimp waiting on the barbie when he gets back here. |
A dingo ate his barbie. In all seriousness, this sounds more dire than first stated. Is there anything practical we can do to help in his situation, Caryn? Letters of warming warmth are nice and all, but a character reference letter might serve him better. Hurry up and wring me out, even if my legs are tangled, they can go much further than before.
There's a lot of information, and I'm not sure what to look for, but www.immigration.gov seems like the place to start. We are OK in a misguided, sadist way.
We are OK in a disabled veteran's way. We are OK. |
I probably should have put more info and everything I know about the situation in the initial post - sorry about that. I've pretty much said everything I know about what's happened. I honestly don't think there's anything practical we can do, except that the blog does have a request saying that if you know of contract work he could do, pass along the information. (I don't know how much good that would do, though, if he's definitely going to be deported.) "I'll sell you the idea for $50,000 and you can go from game developer zero to game developer hero." - Leslie
Character reference? "Hi, I'm good friends with Leslie Nassar. I used to read his anti-Capitalism postings on the website PlanetCrap. Thanks." "YES!! You see people, THAT'S why he's the Vice-President of A/V Services here at Respawn Games. Yotsuya ALWAYS unleashes the fucking fury!" - Warren Marshall
For an English teacher, you aren't very familiar with creative writing. Hurry up and wring me out, even if my legs are tangled, they can go much further than before.
Yot Character reference letters help immensely with immigration actually. I've written a few for friends trying to get work visas from overseas. A collection of letters like that helps grease the wheels. Respawn Games
Open your mind, let the beatings begin. |
anti-Capitalism postings Leslie likes to buy stuff. He's my partner in consumerism. |
Warren- Really? I'm sure his close friends in Oregon or his employers would be a better source, but hey, if it helps, Bailey, start typing. Keep it sark-free. "YES!! You see people, THAT'S why he's the Vice-President of A/V Services here at Respawn Games. Yotsuya ALWAYS unleashes the fucking fury!" - Warren Marshall
I would hope his former employer would help him out. After all, apparently they were the ones who got him into this jam. We are OK in a misguided, sadist way.
We are OK in a disabled veteran's way. We are OK. |
I wonder if he's getting fucked in the ass while in detention. /me high-fives <insert recently deceased celebrity here>
Leslie kept Sony afloat during the rough post-2000 bear market. But really, what can we do? I'd like to help him out -- reference letters, whatever. Anyone we can call directly? I'd gladly get on the phone to vouch for him. ...like the color of a tv screen tuned to a dead channel.
