Gamespy for sale
October 23rd 2003, 23:36 CEST by Quicken Rumours are that Gamespy is on the market and there is no shortage of interested buyers. Of course it's hardly substantiated since it seems NY Post is the only place running the story. But I can see there'd be plenty of interest and probably no better time to sell. I wouldn't even be surprised if the "unnamed major portal" was Yahoo. Would new owners bring a whole new world of grief to us or is GSI corporate enough already that no one would notice the difference. Let the Gamespy bashing begin! |

StickyKeys is useful but it will only work as a toggle for the Shift, Alt, Ctrl, and Windows Logo keys. I guess you could rebind your movement key to one of those keys everytime you wanted to autorun, but that might be too inconvenient (or you could remap the Shift key to the w key in Windows before you start to play your game). To use StickyKeys just go to the Accessibility options in your control panel, and check Use StickyKeys in the Keyboard tab. I'm actually not sure that this will even work because StickyKeys might not actually be sending the key scancodes constantly for the toggled key. Instead it probably just "remembers" what key should be toggled then sends the scancode for the combination press whenever you hit another key. But you can try it out. There really aren't any programs out there that provide exactly the functionality you want, since most of these programs are designed for people with disabilities which usually cause them to press keys multiple times by accident and most people with RSI don't game (where else would you want to toggle pressing the aswd keys?). There are however, a lot of keyboard macro programs some of which will probably allow you to design a recursive macro (you would still need to make a macro to stop the previous macro). Re: origin of reality TV A lot of good information here. But obviously films have been a major influence (the early Lumiere and Edison films were essentially reality tv) in the form of documentaries and naturalistic films. |
|
Looks cool, but no indication of whether it allows key toggling. I have tried keystroke macros ( like I used to make macros in Asherons Call ) but inevitably the stored commands lag and interfere when I try to shut it off. None of this headache (and tendon-ache) would exist if developers would just add a simple 'Toggle Run On / Off' feature... Scroll past this line:

The program you want really isn't out there. Someone should write it. It wouldn't be difficult at all. |
|
This is the closest to what you want. |
|
Most games (don't know for sure about Max Payne 2, don't own it) use direct low-level keyboard scanning for input (via DirectInput) which pretty much negates any benefit at all that you could get from higher level Windows utilities like StickyKeys. "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me."

The program you want really isn't out there. Someone should write it. It wouldn't be difficult at all. It would be difficult, for the reason above. You'd have to drop down to the driver level to make it work with all (or even most) games. "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me."

I dunno. So this function wouldn't work to do what he wants? |

What can you tell me about the new camp? |
|
The New Camp is the place where you have the most freedom and the worst framerate. "You do not truly know someone until you fight them."
|
|
The New Camp is like the Old Camp, only the asshole heirarchy is reversed. With the Old Camp, the higher you go up the social ladder, the more jerks you meet. With the New Camp, all the cool people are at the top. Scorn is a virtue.

But they tried to kill me right away. Unless they were those low level assholes you speak of. |

I mean the dudes right when the game starts. |
|
I never got far enough into Morrowind to hate it. I could never figure out a decent character template, and I constantly got killed by critters that were way out of my league. Oh, in the pond scene? Those are Old Camp. They're jerks from the upper level. Scorn is a virtue.

When the game starts, the only guy there is Deigo. I'm prepared to challenge your assertion that the FMV cutscene is part of the game. Let's not go there. "You do not truly know someone until you fight them."
|
|
The thing with Gothic is that it doesn't provide much direction when the game starts. I had no idea I was supposed to check out each camp and decide where I want to pledge fealty to. To the newb it seems that the old camp is the way to go. |

G-man StickyKeys is useful... "Windows has detected that you were using your keyboard and the program you were running has now been crashed for you. If you would like to disable this feature then use the vague and ambiguous options below" dROU Frank Exchange Of Views (Psychopath Class)

The thing is Cheesy, the Old Camp has residents who are representatives of, and carry missions tied to, each of the other camps. So you'll meet a Baal or whatever from the Swamp Camp, and a merchant from the New Camp, and they'll want you to follow them and check out their camps. It's also a great way to level up, because they do the fighting, clear the paths between camps, and you get the experience. But the guy who punched you is an Old Camp higher up guard. If you talk to Diego, he'll tell you his name and that he's a badass. Scorn is a virtue.

#106 CheesyPoof The thing with Gothic is that it doesn't provide much direction when the game starts. I had no idea I was supposed to check out each camp and decide where I want to pledge fealty to. Diego: "There are three camps in the colony, and you'll have to choose one of them." His initial dialogue emphasizes those bold words when spoken, but the text doesn't, so if you were just blowing past it all, maybe you missed that part. Please do tell us what kind of direction you think would have been more approrpiate? #107 CheesyPoof The spinning logo when it starts up is part of the game. I asked you nicely not to go there. #111 Matthew Gallant Do you have to save the world in Gothic, or can you just open an L.L. Bean and start raking in the dough? Technically, the latter. Through careful management, one can barter for every single piece of ore that every NPC merchant carries (not to mention, rob/pickpocket every NPC, period, as well as open all the chests), take it all to the swamp camp, buy all the weed, then take it back to the new camp and sell it all to the new camp chumps at a profit. And you could repeat this several times, as inventories are frequently refreshed throughout the course of the game. It'd be boring and tedious as hell, but, you asked. "You do not truly know someone until you fight them."

Please do tell us what kind of direction you think would have been more approrpiate? A note in my journal would have been thoughtful. |

To add on to my above post, yes, I can be that thick. |
|
When you talk to each of the three initial contacts for each camp, it does, in fact, place entries in your journal, with cryptic titles like "Joining the New Camp" and "Joining the Swamp Camp." I'm going to take one on the chin here, and state that I don't need to be explaining this to you. "You do not truly know someone until you fight them."

So this function wouldn't work to do what he wants? For most games (particularly commercial Actiony games), no it wouldn't work. These programs work by sending Windows messages like WM_KEYDOWN that the target programs will then process in their Windows MsgProc loop. The problem with that is most games sample input by reading the state of the keyboard directly using DirectInput as a direct link to the keyboard hardware. This happens at a lower level than Windows messages so the game never sees the phantom input that these programs send. YMMV depending on game but the vast majority use DInput or GetAsyncKeyState() and ignore standard Windows messages. "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me."

PA has an article up about the aptly named Phantom console. Apart from the usual stuff implying that the whole thing is an investment scam, there's a note at the bottome about their trademarked slogan "By gamers, for gamers." Wasn't that Interplay's slogan? |

"NVidia's NV36 graphics card." All the controllers and peripherals were made by Logitech, cord connected at first but wireless if you upgrade.
