Gamespy for sale
October 23rd 2003, 23:36 CEST by Quicken Rumours are that Gamespy is on the market and there is no shortage of interested buyers. Of course it's hardly substantiated since it seems NY Post is the only place running the story. But I can see there'd be plenty of interest and probably no better time to sell. I wouldn't even be surprised if the "unnamed major portal" was Yahoo. Would new owners bring a whole new world of grief to us or is GSI corporate enough already that no one would notice the difference. Let the Gamespy bashing begin! |

Through careful management, one can barter for every single piece of ore that every NPC merchant carries (not to mention, rob/pickpocket every NPC, period, as well as open all the chests), take it all to the swamp camp, buy all the weed, then take it back to the new camp and sell it all to the new camp chumps at a profit. And you could repeat this several times, as inventories are frequently refreshed throughout the course of the game. It'd be boring and tedious as hell, but, you asked. "You do not truly know someone until you fight them."

When you talk to each of the three initial contacts for each camp, it does, in fact, place entries in your journal, with cryptic titles like "Joining the New Camp" and "Joining the Swamp Camp." So this function wouldn't work to do what he wants? For most games (particularly commercial Actiony games), no it wouldn't work. These programs work by sending Windows messages like WM_KEYDOWN that the target programs will then process in their Windows MsgProc loop. The problem with that is most games sample input by reading the state of the keyboard directly using DirectInput as a direct link to the keyboard hardware. This happens at a lower level than Windows messages so the game never sees the phantom input that these programs send. YMMV depending on game but the vast majority use DInput or GetAsyncKeyState() and ignore standard Windows messages. "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me."

PA has an article up about the aptly named Phantom console. Apart from the usual stuff implying that the whole thing is an investment scam, there's a note at the bottome about their trademarked slogan "By gamers, for gamers." Wasn't that Interplay's slogan? |

"NVidia's NV36 graphics card." All the controllers and peripherals were made by Logitech, cord connected at first but wireless if you upgrade. Infinium's slogan is "BUILT BY GAMERS FOR GAMERS". Interplay's is "BY GAMERS. FOR GAMERS". Both are officially "live" USPTO marks (Interplay's TM hasn't lapsed) . Infinium's is a servicemark as opposed to a trademark, but considering how related the fields are (both dealing with videogames), I'm pretty surprised that Infinium's registration wasn't denied. Might be an interesting lawsuit in the near future... "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me."

Yeah, everything I've ever seen screams scam. If this thing actually sees the light of day, I'll be very surprised. I'm actually surprised he's going this route and taking it this far, since it's garnering a lot of public scrutiny. Maybe if they release a POS and it dies a public death in the marketplace, the investors can't sue him. |

So how is the phantom different from a PC? The real question, given their marketing angle, is how could it possibly be worth $120 more than an XBOX or be worth the same per-month fee Microsoft charges for the highest price XBOX live pricing scheme. Stupid, stupid, stupid. You can see the crash and burn coming 10 miles away. The smouldering wreckage will burn brightly right next to the n-gage and Sony's PSP (to a lesser degree, but still an obvious distaster-in-the making) "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me."

The thing I can't get over is that even if you buy one at the store, you have to get it shipped to you. Excuse me? The thing I can't get over is that even if you buy one at the store, you have to get it shipped to you. This is among the many things that sets my scam alarms a-jangling. If they say "allow 6-8 weeks for shipping," that gives them two months to collect money before anyone even notices that they have never made a single prototype. |
