The End of the Exclusive?
August 30th 2003, 23:18 CEST by JMCDaveL

So on Thursday pretty much every gaming site that hosts downloads banded together against Gamespy's exclusive on the Call of Duty demo. After thousands of sweating hamburger stained forum dwellers screamed "NO YUO~!!!" in unison, Activision has decided to release the demo to everyone... early at that. So, does this mean that anytime Gamespy gets special attention then the interweb militia will take up arms and cry until Gamespy has to share its toys again? Also, will the idiots who set nasty emails to Caryn over this die a horrible death involving knitting needles and a hummer?

No, I'll try that.  Last time it happened though Microsoft Online Crash Analysis said this
Analysis Information

Thank you for submitting an error report. The error was likely caused by:

A hardware failure reported by your Central Processing Unit (CPU)

This behavior occurs because your computer processor detected an unrecoverable hardware error and reported it to Windows. For more information, contact the manufacturer of your computer.

Then has a link that says it can be caused by overclocking.  Maybe my machine is just running too hot when I have all the details turned up on the game?  I'm not overclocking anything.

Next time it happens, pop the case and see if it's radiating heat. If so, refer to resident tech nerd gurus for advice on cooling, etc.

So, how do you like the game so far? Was it worth the $59.95?

All I know is that my internal case temp shot up 5 degrees F when I played Tron 2 on high-detail.

It could be cooling, or just the patch as others have suggested.

Well I applied the patch with no changes.  After the next crash I played again with lower detail sttings(turned that funky glow off etc).  IT still crashed, but went much longer before doing so, so lowering the detail seemed to change something.  I'd rather not go all the way down to 640x480 with no goodies turned on to play though.  Inside my case is really hot, I don't have any way to read the tempereature so I don't know if its hotter than usual.  Any good cooling I might want to check out for a Radeon 9700 and a Athlon XP 2200?  Keep in mind I'm a dumbass, so I need parts that can be installed with a minimum amount of knowledge.

just open up the case for now and see how it goes. A little table fan and you're done.

You'll need to see where there are places to stick in case fans, whether or not the ones you have are working, etc. It's also possible your CPU heatsink/fan is either crappy, or it just needs a good reapplication of thermal jizz. Case cooling isn't really a science, it's just moving air inside the case to out of it.

A 45 second review of Final Fantasy Tactics for the GBA. Ahem.

What the fuck were those people thinking? Oh boy, we're children! Let's start out the game with a tutorial on combat set in a schoolyard snowball fight! Oh boy, self-referential comments about how great the Final Fantasy games are, and how we wish we could live in Final Fantasy, and OH GOD A MAGIC BOOK SENT US INTO FINAL FANTASY. Say, combat judges! Like referees! With rules! Stupid rules! No item use on tuesdays, or you're SENT TO JAIL. No Protect spells on Wednesdays, or we fine you 600 Gil! No daggers in combat with thieves! And all my teammates are furries? THAT'S THE FINAL FANTASY I REMEMBER ALRIGHT. Clumsy, clunky interface?! Where do I sign up! Press R to glean info on item in inventory, eh? ITEM INFO: ITEM NAME... and 45 blank lines follow. What does this item do then? FIND OUT ON YOUR OWN. Job management trees that are as navigatable and logical as VCR programming instructions? Joy! And oh boy, I can capture, raise, and train monsters... cute, brightly-colored monsters of many diverse and pointless variations! To what purpose, you ask? None! Because monsters are infinitely weaker than recruited sentients! Huzzah! I've been invited by an anorexic moogle to join Clan Nutsy! This is just great! But there's more! Repetitive, pointless battles that are completely unrelated to a storyline that even a 7-year old finds tedious and bland! Which is apparently the age group this is being pitched to. Thank you, Enix. Thank you, Square. I guess the translation for the PSX original wasn't enough to buy back your souls from hell's own.

Haggle gaggle and all that.

Speaking of cooling and cases and stuff, are there any cases one would recommend that provide a nice balance between noise-reduction and airflow? I've heard some good things about the Antec Sonata, so I'm thinking it may be time to replace my generic PC case. I'm not really looking to spend $400 on the top of the line Lian Li or anything, just something that is a good, solid case.

This is funny in a not so funny way. Scroll down the page for documents in English. The banner at the top says: "Join the caravan of martyrs". Doesn't need any more explanation, does it? They've even got a transcript of an interview with Osama Bin Laden on there.

One funny part is what seems to be the islamic version of a firewall: a sentence at the top that reads: "Oh Allah, protect this data from the evil influences of the cursed devil and his followers".

Not really, just a 2-3 degrees usually. I have a LOT of air exchange happening in the case. I still can't justify going insane and getting liquid cooling going, its a bit too much if there is a single failure. You're pretty much guaranteed to lose the CPU, if not anything else you've decided to cool that way. Until I can fill such a system with Flourinert (3M non-conducting fluid) then forget it.

As far as cpu-in-a-minifridge, it would be a bit impractical for me, since I do take my case to LAN events now and then.

the sonata's a nice case, but a bit low on stock cooling, look at popping some extra 80mm fans in there.

failing that, as mentioned, yank the side panel off and have a box/desk fan blowing in

Call of Duty would be a great game if it game a more complete environment.  As is, there is only one path to anything, and that kind of sucks.  Everything about the demo is right, except for that.  There is no chance to use creative ideas to solve problems, all you are given is a direct assault.  Kind of sucks.

actually youre semi wrong there ..

there are several places where if you pay attention you can get flanking positions on the enemy units, one such is after the mortar field, instead of running down the side of the building toward the half track, if you go around the back and crawl you can go under the fence and hit the enemy who would come out and do nasty things to you en route from the side/rear.

It is mostly linear however

It's the classic problem ... do you give the player a heavily scripted game that is linear or do you let them roam freely and have less cool things to see?

No game developer wants to spend time creating content that a large portion of their players won't see.  It's just bad economics.

It's a far better use of time to give the player the best, most cinematic experience possible.  Most times, that translates into a linear style game.  Such is life.

Interesting point, Warren.

I know the new gaming buzzword is "non-linear" gameplay, ala GTA3, but does it really work in every situation, for every type of game? If you think about it, even these games have specific things you NEED to do, you just control the order. I would rather have a game give me fun and challenging objectives rather than "let me drive around and do whatever I want."

For my money, Assualt in the original UT was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Too bad there were only a handful of missions.

Oh, sure, NOW you appreciate me hating all games.

I know the new gaming buzzword is "non-linear" gameplay, ala GTA3, but does it really work in every situation, for every type of game?

You know, I've been mulling it over recently, and I don't feel that GTA3 was really as "non-linear" as some tout it to be. Aside from the sequential order of islands, there is also a semi-sequential unlocking of mission assignment NPCs, and while you can ignore some missions entirely and switch focus when you like, at the end of the day, I can't just fire up a new game and take on the yakuza missions. GTA3 (and VC, by default) allows, even encourages the player to run around playing with the physics and vehicles, robbing stores and running over drug dealers for mad bling-bling, but it doesn't seem non-linear in, per se, the Fable game is touted to be non-linear, where I supposedly should be able to do whatever the fuck all I want in some world-encompassing sandbox. More of a series of engaging distractions from the primary game.

I suppose all I'm trying to say is that GTA3 has non-linear elements, rather than being a non-linear game. I have no idea why that should matter to me, much less anyone else, I'm saying is all.

So, how do you like the game so far? Was it worth the $59.95?

Bailey-

In a non-linear way, I agree with what you wrote.

I mean, I like Vice City and all, but you can only do so much driving around. You HAVE to complete certain missions in order to do a lot in the game. I suppose the only real non-linear game out there is ... The Sims.

The first GTA had pay phones around the city that gave you different jobs, which you could do in any order. GTA 2 Allowed you to choose missions from different gangs (Yakuza, Triads, Maffia, etc). But doing a mission for one gang lowered your reputation for the others. Aside from the godaweful graphics, GTA2 is far superior to GTA3 in (almost) every way.

No, I don't mind being labelled as such in the slightest. For what, caring about my appearance? Bitch, please. The three or four people who think it's funny are small-town bumpkins with raggedy-ass nails, spotty faces, and dirty hair (females included), who've never travelled much more than 50km from where they were born. They can't understand why I smile and chuckle quietly through my teeth when they try to use my application of skin and nail products as a finely-tuned jab. Their laughter dies off slowly, they become uncomfortable, and find an excuse to be elsewhere.

If anything, it's somewhat enjoyable. My high school years were largely painful, and this is like the old "if I could do it all over again, knowing what I do now..." wish. Except I don't have a sports almanac.
