The End of the Exclusive?
August 30th 2003, 23:18 CEST by JMCDaveL So on Thursday pretty much every gaming site that hosts downloads banded together against Gamespy's exclusive on the Call of Duty demo. After thousands of sweating hamburger stained forum dwellers screamed "NO YUO~!!!" in unison, Activision has decided to release the demo to everyone... early at that. So, does this mean that anytime Gamespy gets special attention then the interweb militia will take up arms and cry until Gamespy has to share its toys again? Also, will the idiots who set nasty emails to Caryn over this die a horrible death involving knitting needles and a hummer? |

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I haven't heard that one!* Disclaimer: I have. A hundred fucking times. Everytime Bronson's death is mentioned, in fact. I was also contend that since he died of natural causes at the age of 81, he did not, in fact, have a death wish. Eric So what should we expect to see in Unreal Tournament 2004? Do I REALLY have to clarify that I was talking about story driven, single player games? Respawn Games

Hulka has been displaced. Before anyone thinks I've been abducted by a UFO (again), I wanted to let you all know I'm knee deep in shit. Literally. That's right. Yesterday, the great 10" of rain backed the sewer system up and my house was flooded from the toilet and shower. I have 3 to 4 foot of piss and shit in the lower portion of my tri-level home. Needless to say, my computers are ruined. We didn't have much time to get stuff out at all. We'll, I'm off to find a place to live. Doomed! the Movie - Videogames Turn Deadly...

Oh that sucks. Having experienced that in a place I rented many years ago, there is nothing, NOTHING worse then waking up, opening up the bedroom door and stepping right into 3 feet of body waste. I believe I can fly......urk.

Hmmm... I'm trying to commiserate with Hulka without making any bad puns. That's er... crap? no... shite? no... er... really really not nice? Seriously though Hulka, sorry to hear that, hope you get sorted out soon. I'm buying UT2Kx sight unseen. UT2Kx-1 was good to me. I also want to support the ongoing development of deathmatch. I rarely have large blocks of time to devote to gaming. When I do have large blocks of time, I'd rather burn it on something that will last. Something substantial you can walk away with and pick up years later. So it's valuable to me to jump into a game and live a few moments of compact, high action, rapid-fire story with no arbitrary "work" required. No commitment. Just frags. Laffs. Trashtalk. Then, back to work. For me, this year at least, UT2Kx is a great fit. ...where x=4. Beat to fit, paint to match.

Aw Hulka, sorry to hear about your misfortune. Still, heres hoping that householders insurance will pony up for you, so you can replace what you lost and have a spiffy shiny pc, instead of the piece of shi... oh dear punning and not even meaning to :\ Anyway, so long as the family is ok, thats the important bit, things are just things and can be replaced ! #109 Darkseid-D actually youre semi wrong there .. there are several places where if you pay attention you can get flanking positions on the enemy units Yes, I know that. I fully explored every aspect of the map. Those flanking positions were nice, but completely gratuitous and required no effort in order to spot and use. #110 Warren Marshall It's the classic problem ... do you give the player a heavily scripted game that is linear or do you let them roam freely and have less cool things to see? No game developer wants to spend time creating content that a large portion of their players won't see. It's just bad economics. It's a far better use of time to give the player the best, most cinematic experience possible. Most times, that translates into a linear style game. Such is life. I guess I wasn't clear enough. I wasn't asking for non linearity in any fashion. If you've followed my posts, you'd realize I'm the last person who'd wish for that. However, what I meant by a more complete environment would be being able to do something like shooting through a fence in order to sneak up on the enemy. I think the biggest failings in these games is that you can machine gun a chair, table, fence, and nothing happens. Things like the WW2 experience have been done to death, and I've played so much of it that I need a more complete reality inside the game to continue to be totally entertained. It's annoying to know where the enemy is, and see what could have been a potential alternate solution, if only the developers had taken the time to put a little more thought in to the level. While I don't specifically want a GTA3 style experience (I didn't like GTA3 btw), it WOULD be nice (and new) to have a complete area filled with enemies, and allow you to solve the issue however you wanted. In the exact case of Call of Duty, I found the so called 'cinematic experience' to be mostly a waste anyway; since the AI required that I do absolutely everything to progress. Their addition, because of this, became mostly superficial. Which was probably why you could gun down your whole team for fun (except the captain who regenerates health and can't be killed), and still complete the level just fine. I understand the reasons for doing what they did, but I really think they sort of approached from a poor direction. How many it had cost in the amassing, what blood and sorrow, what good ships scuttled on the deep, what brave men walking the plank blindfold, what shot of cannon, what shame and lies and cruelty, perhaps no man alive could tell.
|
|
Well, poor direction for me anyway. I'm pretty sure the game will be a wild success among most gamers. How many it had cost in the amassing, what blood and sorrow, what good ships scuttled on the deep, what brave men walking the plank blindfold, what shot of cannon, what shame and lies and cruelty, perhaps no man alive could tell.

Things like the WW2 experience have been done to death, and I've played so much of it that I need a more complete reality inside the game to continue to be totally entertained. This I can agree with. The game is very locked into not only "do this objective now" sort of gameplay, but it only allows you one way to do that objective (flanking doesn't really count as another way if it's the way you are supposed to do it). Sure, I'll follow objectives, I'll go with troops, and I'll have a good time doing it. But I'd sure love if there were multiple ways to solve each objective. If I could blow a hole through a wall, bring a building down with some explosives, climb over a 3 foot high fence. Linear games have their place, just as non-linear games do. But extreme straight lines will lose the fun factor sooner or later. I find myself agreeing with Charles more and more. It's like some crack I just can't give up. Maybe underneath his general "I'm a jerk" exterior, he actually has good sense. Who'd of thunk it. :) Or maybe I have same problems Chucky does...now that's scary. "I'm an extreme programmer. Thanks guys. You'd be surprised to find out my insurance company doesn't cover floods, but since this was as sewage backup, I'll get a small fee to clean up and replace some stuff, but it's nowhere near the amount of damage. you can read more stories about the mess in Indiana Doomed! the Movie - Videogames Turn Deadly...

#151 Warren Marshall So I'm to blame for Unreal2 now? What, you expect him to pay attention to who makes what? How in character could that be? How many it had cost in the amassing, what blood and sorrow, what good ships scuttled on the deep, what brave men walking the plank blindfold, what shot of cannon, what shame and lies and cruelty, perhaps no man alive could tell.

what the hell, Hulka? Did you get your insurance out of a Cracker Jacks box? Sucks. I believe I can fly......urk.

What, you expect him to pay attention to who makes what? How in character could that be? He works for Epic, who owns the Unreal IP, and Warren works on the UnrealEd too, so indirectly he's to blame. |

#155 Sgt Hulka Thanks guys. You'd be surprised to find out my insurance company doesn't cover floods, but since this was as sewage backup, I'll get a small fee to clean up and replace some stuff, but it's nowhere near the amount of damage. you can read more stories about the mess in Indiana Having grown up in a small town prone to floods from the river it was built around, and having been in at least 3 major floods, I can sympathise. We couldn't get flood insurance there either, however, if it could be proven that damage was caused by sewage backup instead of flood water, the insurance companies could be forced to cover it. Maybe you want to look in to it a little closer? It could be different where you are, but worth checking out. Floods are considered act of god, but apparently sewer backup isn't. How many it had cost in the amassing, what blood and sorrow, what good ships scuttled on the deep, what brave men walking the plank blindfold, what shot of cannon, what shame and lies and cruelty, perhaps no man alive could tell.

#153 Eric T. Cheng So I'm to blame for Unreal2 now? No, just The Wheel of Time. That's interesting. Make a few levels for a game and the entire thing becomes your fault. Oh wait, I wrote a little UnrealScript as well. Fuck, it IS my fault! Respawn Games

Well, those of you paying attention knew my computer was shutting down while I tried to play Tron 2. I kept getting errors that refered to heat and overclocking. I took the cover off my case to see if I could cool it down. Came back 5 minutes later and it had shut down, only this time it won't turn back on. I gave it a reach around and felt the grill on my power supply and it's so hot I have burn marks on two of my fingers. Wait an hour for it to cool donw, and it still won't power up, I'm guessing the supply is dead. Does this mean a 350w wasn't enough me and it was working too hard? These are the times I wish I had bought a machine from Dell, then I could just ship it back instead of trying to figure it out myself. |
|
Could just be that your power supply fan died, and the power supply died because of it. It's highly unlikely that a 350 watt wouldn't be enough. How many it had cost in the amassing, what blood and sorrow, what good ships scuttled on the deep, what brave men walking the plank blindfold, what shot of cannon, what shame and lies and cruelty, perhaps no man alive could tell.

|
was your power supply some brandless thing or of a respected brand (Antec, Zalman, AOpen,...)? "Sorry LP, I had to go to a lunch meeting and was unable to keep it real."
-Shadarr |
|
Surely he bought the power supply from Legend Entertainment... At night on them banks I'd lie awake
And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take |
|
If its only a power supply I'll be a happy man. I need a way to keep better track of the heat in different areas of my case, anyone have experiance with anything that is really good at monitoring heat? |
|
I do believe Warren supplied my official WOT 350w power supply. Actaully it came with the case and I can't see a brand name on it. |
|
I'd take it in to a reputable shop and let them handle it. A few suggestions or links on a board will likely end up doing more harm than good for the novice technician, even considering the validity and professional status of the sources. And by reputable, I mean not a franchise. Any place that hires technicians for just above minimum wage has some assuredly shitty technicians on-staff. Too straight for #planetcrap.
|
|
Really? Is changing out a power supply difficult? I've changed out hard drives and videocards, is it worse than that? |
|
more than likely its the psu then, if youre lucky, it didnt kill your system when it died. Ive 3 u160 Hds, 4 ide Hds, dvd and cdr (and a fanbus) running off my sparkle 350w with zero issues, but for future overhead room you may want to look at a 400w or greater. Antec, Enermax, Sparkle are all solid brands, avoid DEER and FOXCONN like the plague. If you want a quiet pc tho, Zalman do a nice near silent psu. $50 + shipping will get you a decent power supply, do bear in mind that the psu is possibly the most critical component of your pc as everything else depends on it to function, why trust your whole pc to something cheap. Do not go gently into that good night.
Old age should burn and rage at the close of day. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. |
|
Swapping out a PSU isnt particularly hard, the downside being it might be MORE than just a dead/blown psu. Might not even be the psu, you could have a blown component on the motherboard that was causing the psu to overheat. Concievably you could be looking at a dead motherboard / cpu / video card / memory / sound card and any drives you might have. I concur with Bailey's suggestion you take it in for repair, however Frys, Circuit City, Best Buy or PC World may not be the best options as they rarely have anyone who can tell their arse from their elbow handling pc 'repair' / upgrades. Course if you have a 2nd psu you can test with.... Do not go gently into that good night.

#143 by Sgt Hulka That's right. Yesterday, the great 10" of rain backed the sewer system up and my house was flooded from the toilet and shower. Oh man, that's terrible Hulka. Happened to me about 4 years ago, and I made the mistake of starting the cleanup with hot water. Important safety tip: Eventually, yes hot water will be important, but right in the beginning, the last thing you want is to turn that stuff into a steaming tea. Ugh. |

In other news, we may not have very long to live. |
