Shadowbane Launched
March 27th 2003, 04:28 MSK by Foodbunny There's certainly no shortage of problems. Starting off with how it was supposed to start yesterday, with Ubi inexplicably telling retailers not to start selling the game until today. Other delightful Ubi-side screw-ups include: 1) Their registration website is overload. Massively overloaded. Completely unable to handle anything near the amount of traffic it's seeing. According to the guys from Wolfpack the site is registering about 15 people per minute when it's up. 2) Their registration website is bugged. Seriously bugged. When you go to confirm your credit card information you will occasionally get someone else's name, billing address, and the last digits of their credit card number. It's unknown if hitting confirm will register your confirmation code and preorder code to their account. 3) Even if you manage to register with all the correct information, some people, after paying for 3+ months, are being told that their subscription has expired and being told to buy more time. 4) Their customer service is hiding out back, hoping this will all go away. Their billing customer service line was putting people in a 2-hour long queue and then hanging up on them until a few hours ago when they turned off the queue and are now skipping right to the hanging up part. Of course, the publisher doesn't get to have all the fun. If you manage to get through the registration, your credit card is accepted, your subscription is determined to be valid, and you haven't slit your wrists yet you get to patch. Until just recently people were getting corrupt patches, a problem they claim to have fixed. Once you manage to patch it's time to get through the Login Server of Cryptic Errors. Anyone who beta tested will be quite familiar with how emotionally fragile the login servers are, and how apt they are to simply throw their hands in the air and dramatically refuse to log anyone in without telling anyone what's bothering them. They go down a lot. And if one goes down while you are trying to figure out character creation you get dumped back to the log in screen for another long wait. At least the 300 people playing right now have yet to experience the Shadowbane lag. But all things in good time.. towards the end of beta the server couldn't handle more than 1100 people per server before rubberbanding and spell lag made the game start to approach unplayable. The game servers also had to be restarted on fairly regular basis because of a server-side memory leak (a lovely mirror to the client-side one) grinding everything down to a halt. Oh, those newbies will love it when it takes them 5 minutes to open their bank. Maybe it's a good thing no one can get in. Beta testers had this build for all of one week, with Wolfpack ignoring bug reports and balance issues in favor of building their own cities, making level 100 characters, and killing everyone. But what else should we expect from "Play 2 Crush"? |

By the way, this is Balderama reporting live from where ever I am, bringing the news to you on the crap. No, please, sit down, no need to thank me. |
Keep it to the warthread speedracer. "Then I ram my overpositor down your throat and lay my eggs in your chest. But I'm not an alien!"

Embedding has been an astounding PR coup for the Pentagon. The reporters use the words "we" and "us" profusely, identifying themselves with the military, and while this has prompted concerns regarding objectivity among US commentators, it is not surprising, given their very personal stake in their units' success. Now let's focus on this. This is very interesting indeed. I have to say, whoever at the Pentagon came up with this was brilliant. This is a very good way of influencing the press and making sure only good things get reported, or mostly positive things. The embedded reporters will never say bad stuff about the unit they are embedded in, since essentially, they are part of it. And so you can expect them cheering on and expressing their full support all the time. Which will only help people in the USA watching it to be pro war, and be distracted from all the horrible things it causes. |
Like I said before, this war looks a lot like Mogadishu. I can't wait for them to reach baghdad. |
I can't wait for you to realize your opinion isn't anything anyone actually gives a shit about. I believe I can fly......urk.

I can't wait for your to realize I don't give a fuck about what you think. |

What? I believe I can fly......urk.

An eyewitness tells today of the heaviest battle of the war so far which has left 750 Iraqis dead. Sean D Naylor of the American Army Times quotes a US soldier describing the fighting as so intense that "it looks like Apocalypse Now". Naylor reports the destruction of American tanks, rocket-propelled grenade assaults and deadly air strikes called in on the Iraqi attackers. So intense was the fighting that at one stage the 3rd Squadron commander's driver, Private First Class Randall Duke Newcomb, was forced to steer his Humvee with one hand while firing out of the window with the other. Duke Newcomb Forever!!! linky Scott, George, send this guy something. I believe I can fly......urk.

WHATEVA HE DO WHAT HE WAAAN' My only problem with Bezzy is, truly and honestly, about one third of his longer, passionate posts make no sense to me. I don't necessarily agree or disagree, I just literally can't parse them. - Hugin

shut up Balderdoghumper. "..and Trolly McTroll is the best name EVER. I laugh every time I see it." - Wudi

LP, that is the best war link yet. We are the goon squad and we're coming to town. Beep beep.

That is quite, quite perfect, yes. My only problem with Bezzy is, truly and honestly, about one third of his longer, passionate posts make no sense to me. I don't necessarily agree or disagree, I just literally can't parse them. - Hugin

I know others have already pointed this out, but keep it in the War! thread, Balderama. Try to give a shit, just this once, and show some of that concern for others you pretend to have that leads you to post all those links in the first place. I read most of them, but others don't want to. That's why there's a separate topic! Googlism: whisp is de expert in zwerkbal
I can't wait for your to realize I don't give a fuck about what you think. Which is why you keep spamming links. Because you don't care. |
#12 Ashiran Now who is to blame? Evil Ubisoft for taking advantage or stupid players who act like rabid sheep? Gamers should be smarter than this, yes, but it's still not their fault. It's not nice to take advantage of those dumber than you. Plus, there's no excuse for releasing something this non-functional, ESPECIALLY when it comes to collecting credit card numbers. If the public interface is this bad, I'd not be surprised if there were all kinds of security problems lurking underneath that might allow someone to harvest names and numbers. It's "not nice"? When did big business ever care about being nice? |
#37 Warren Marshall It's "not nice"? When did big business ever care about being nice? You're right, but that doesn't make it good. Besides, in this case I think it's merely an example of them being too incompetent to do otherwise. Googlism: whisp is de expert in zwerkbal
#35 not about your opinion in any case. |
Thou dost wound me, good sir. |
Have any of the companies which have actually released a MMOG gone out of business and shut down the servers? Other than Meridian 59, which I thought was purchased and reopened. With UO, Everquest and AC still chugging along, I am just curious if the lifecycle of one of these games have been chronicled, beginning to the bitter bitter end. |
Motor City Online died. Earth and Beyond will probably be next. We are the goon squad and we're coming to town. Beep beep.
Well, actually, it is dying. I suppose you could still subscribe and watch it go. We are the goon squad and we're coming to town. Beep beep.
Surely Anarchy Online is next? Troll, troll, troll your post, gently down the page...
Whisp: You're right, but that doesn't make it good. You are right, it isn't good. But the fact remains that "The Foaming Flock™" only resorts to spamming forums with "YUO SUCK!" posts rather then doing the smart thing which is not p(l)aying at all. The only thing companies listen to is the talk of money. Now that Ubisoft managed to pull off another AO. Publishers are going to do the exact same thing with future MMOG releases. I mean what does it hurt? People won't p(l)ay? !quote 24 I'm sorry, but while Ubisoft is being very naughty, I still largely blame the rabid sheep. Especially cause they could know this was going to happen. #35 not about your opinion in any case. People who need to restate over and over again how much they not care are... |
Actually, Anarchy Online fixed most of the game-killing problems, and last month reactivated all old accounts for a month, to give everyone a look. Their numbers will actually be up for a little while. Until Star Wars kills them, at least. We are the goon squad and we're coming to town. Beep beep.

Movie of american killed soldiers Movie of american killed soldiers THIS IS WHAT WAR LOOKS LIKE, YOU STUPID AMERICAN FUCKS |

Babies and children who have been \"mutated\" because of the economic embargo placed on Iraq |
What? |
Baldy, are those links supposed to make us want to keep Sadaam in power? I don't think they're working. We are the goon squad and we're coming to town. Beep beep.
And if can't trust the Iraq embassy, who can you trust? I mean, we all know a lack of food causes genetic mutations, which is why dieting is so popular. I believe I can fly......urk.

And this makes us want to keep Saddam in power how? "..and Trolly McTroll is the best name EVER. I laugh every time I see it." - Wudi

In the hopes that eventually, he'll create the X-men. I believe I can fly......urk.

Multiplayer Battletech 3029 never made it out of beta before EA killed it, which is a freaking shame as it was tremedously good fun. Fun enough that several thousand people signed up for pay to beta accounts (they got refunded ok), kinda hoped someone had gotten the binarys and leaked them so we could set up private servers. Oh well. Do not go gently into that good night.
Old age should burn and rage at the close of day. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. |

USA! USA! USA! obdisclaimer: i love america!

Darkseid: I played that for a while. It was damn good fun. You can't derail this train of idiocy, Shadarr. Not even with a big fat cow of logic on the tracks. - Bailey
Leslie, I'm just not feeling the bitterness or bile from you of late. I need you to step up here and start bringing your game. I believe I can fly......urk.

i'm just here supporting our troops. in times of war, it's ones duty to support ones head of state, whether that be the queen, or the prime minister, or the president. my country, right or wrong. obdisclaimer: i love america!

ps. USA! USA! USA! obdisclaimer: i love america!

Can someone call Lassie? I've fallen in a sarchasm. We are the goon squad and we're coming to town. Beep beep.
Heh, that Ted Rall cartoon is my backdrop at the moment. "United We Stand!" "Proud to be German!" |
In case you can't tell, Leslie is still deciding whether he supports the war or not. I always thought democracy looked more like a drunk frat boy being anally raped by vikings.

i'm just here supporting our troops. in times of war, it's ones duty to support ones head of state, whether that be the queen, or the prime minister, or the president. my country, right or wrong. I could be wrong, but no one here has even implied that - not even bago. Personally, I can hold more than one thought it my head - I never did get the match up between supporting troops and supporting war. These guys volunteer to defend their country, it's not their fault President Bush likes big noises. I believe I can fly......urk.

I don't understand why anyone would want to play Shadowbane. Not only is the word synonymous with fuck-up, it doesn't have any compelling features that would make the game fun once the stability issues get sorted. Are there really that many masochists out there? |
To Balderama: Who are you to say we are stupid. Imagine the worst americans have done in our history and multiply it by ten and that is what saddam and his regime do every day to innocent iraqis. Comedy kicks ass
Just came across an interesting link. It's an interesting discussion that took place on an Irish radio station not too long ago. Scott Ritter (the ex-weapons inspector) and an Iraqi expatriate have an argument over what's currently going on over there, and a few Irish news people discuss the quality of the news coverage we've been seeing. |
To crapmaster: You don't have a very good grasp of American history. You'll need to go back over a hundred years for the really juicy stuff (slavery, genocide, bloody civil war). You should probably amend your statement to say, "Imagine the worst that Americans have done during Saddam's reign [etc.]" |
Not quite so far back, but the US did drop a nuclear bomb on a city. I guarantee you Saddam isn't doing that 10 times a day. |
not yet "..and Trolly McTroll is the best name EVER. I laugh every time I see it." - Wudi
" If i ever have a daughter, I'm going to name her Trolly. - The_Joker |
I should just say, if anyone out there doesn't want to listen to that clip I posted in its entirety, the main exchange between the Iraqi and Ritter is at about 23:00 minutes. |
Personally, I can hold more than one thought it my head i can't, so i vacillate on issues. that way, i get to see it from multiple angles and keep my many enemies on their toes. obdisclaimer: i love america!
