Problem: I switched Video cards so that I could install Windows XP. Now I'd like to switch back but whenever I do that it freezes up again at the boot screen. ATI Radeon 9700 btw... so my question, is there any way I can install the drivers before I manually put the card back in? I've tried downloading them from the site, doing it from the CD, etc, but since the card isn't in there at the time it won't install. Any suggestions? Install the new drivers in safe mode. You may have to do a manual install through the hardware devices screen. I had a similar problem with my Radeon64Mb VIVO. Windows would install fine, but would refuse to boot. I managed to get into safe mode, but Windows wouldn't recognize my video card. However, by manually installing the correct drivers, everything was fine. A bunch of feathered DEUS EX MACHINAS come out of NOWHERE and save EVERYBODY.

It won't go into safe mode :\ Whenever I try to boot up in any safe mode my screen gets colored lines and freezes. Doesn't look so good. I'll try working with the BIOS some, thanks to everyone for the help! I've got it all.

Maybe just not play on BR-Slaughterhouse. It was my least favorite map out of the whole game anyway. No, wait, that huge forest with the jump pads, that was worse. At least it was really pretty to look at while you wandered around aimlessly looking for someone to kill. There's a big leap from looking at the sun to making a hydrogen bomb. In between, you just go blind.

I had a problem like that with a realy old CGA monitor... It was overheating. We solved it by using a pen cap to keep a hot metal plate away from a heat sensor. I thought about the heat issue as well. But it did the same thing immediately upon startup after letting it sit overnight. Read, Understand, Post: Choose any two.

Max Payne is DirectX, right? For some reason that plays fine, it's mainly just anything newer like UT2K3 - That leads me to believe it's the RAM. So LPM: You would absolutely 100% of the time avoid the 400MHz stuff, even from a reputable dealer like Kingston? This one doesn't look okay? In other news, I'm very impressed with the nforce audio coming out of here. The driverset utility that comes with it is slick and seems a lot less bloated than Creative's. It's nice to have real surround sound back. Unfortunately I don't have access to a good video card to see if that's the culprit, but I will be upgrading the RAM soon. If that still doesn't fix it I'll go for the low-hanging fruit of a G4ti4200 until the G5FX hits the shelves. Drat. I think the point more isn't that PC3100 is so terribly bad, but it just doesn't gain you much speed, you can get better performance with 333 until the chipset makers revise a bit more. |

Okay question for graphics monkeys and designers, alike: I'm looking to get a new graphics tablet, as my old one won't work with XP (Genius haven't offered updated drivers... cheers), and besides which, the surface has warped with old age. Bleh. I'm willing to spend ~£150 with an absolute limit of £200, but I'm baffled with choice. Basically I'm looking for a minimum of A5 or A4 (hah!) with pressure sensitivity. e-pen seems to do a great budget range, but they really are tiny and have pretty low definition. If they do have a high-end range as well, I have yet to find it... Wacom are great quality, but I don't anticipate myself becing able to afford one any time soon. Genius do massive tablets (46x30cm!) at a little over £100, but I can't find details on the shitty Dabs site about wether it has pressure sensitivity or decent lines per inch. The Genius site is too fucking slow. Any ideas? |

Marsh, Wacom does have smaller "lower end" tablets for general uses, such as the Grahpire2, which is about $99 US. |

McCorleone, DDR333 is recommended for the nforce2 in two sticks because thats what its made for to be optimal, buying DDR400 will decrease performance. |

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that DDR400 sucks or anything, but in regards to the NF2, 333 performs better. I believe I can fly......urk.

MCorleone Slaughterhouse is a large map and it uses a lot of memory, so it's probably one of the few maps that hits the bad part of your RAM. You'll probably also crash loading CTF-December. It's RAM intensive as well. |

Sweet - RAM it is. As far as settling for 333MHz, fast or not, I can't bring myself to do it. I have locked on to my newest purchase. I will settle for nothing less. I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.

LP - My rationale is that I believe you - It is slower for now, but I figure that is probably a BIOS limitation at this point if the board allows it - Perhaps it's not optimized yet and will be addressed in the future. That combined with the timings of the linked DIMMs cement my decision. I dig link to it before checking newegg, though, and ~$450USD is a good-sized buttbuggerer. It will have to wait, I'm going to pull the original DIMM now, though, to be sure. I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.

It has to be the video card. New processor, new motherboard, fresh install, pulled the old 512MB, left only the new one, same problem. The only common denominator is the video card. I wish there was a place that I could "borrow" a video card for a day. The retailers are too much of a hassle and I'm always on the top-side of the curve with my friends computer-wise. They're still using G2's. ich. I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.

Marsh - Look into Aiptek. Their tablets are pretty highly rated, and vastly cheaper than wacom. I'm probably going to be picking up their 11"x9" model soon. -chris |

McCorleone, did you then swap the sticks? You may just have encountered the bad one on the first try. I've Got mail: depends on the Bios. Typically, there is a couple of settings labeled AGP memory, Driving Control, cache, etc. You'll just have to look around it to you find what you need. You SHOULD have a setting that will allow you to force it to 4x. Also, I suggest doing a google search on you mother board and the Radeon 9700, and see if you can find other folks with your problem. One good place to start is the forums at www.rage3d.com. I believe I can fly......urk.

Marsh - There's a couple of things they don't do. One: their pens don't have eraser buttons on the back of them. Which, actually, is fine by me, since just switching to the eraser tool in photoshop is both easier and more precise. Two: they don't offer a bunch of different types of pens that all work in different ways, the wacom offers their "airbrush" pen, and their "actually writes on a piece of paper, as well as working with the tablet" pen. Beyond that, I think it's just that Wacom holds an incredible amount of mindshare. Up until a year or two ago, they were the *only* game in town. All of the other tablets were completely inferior (some weren't even pressure-sensitive). Now the competition is catching up, but no one knows it. I'd never even heard of Aiptek until a few weeks ago. -chris |

The smallest Aiptek only has a 4x6 work area. Dos the area make that much of a difference, or is it pretty easy to work around? |

Chris - never understood the need for physically different pen types... that's why Photoshop has different tools! jjohnsen - it depends on your needs, of course, and how much desk space you have. However, the smaller the work area, the lower resolution you are going to get because it will still detect the cursor point at the same number of lines per inch as the larger tablets. So, a quick curly sweep might not end up looking smooth, but rather a series of straight lines joined end to end. |

E-phonk: Probably answered sufficiently already, but a second router will do the trick. Assuming that you are using static IPs* on the inside network, you should only have to make changes to the firewall so that any internet traffic from those 4/5 users who need the faster net access are routed to Router2 instead of (the currently over-subscribed) Router1. Internal mail etc. won't be affected because the PCs won't be changing to a different network. You probably won't need to change anything on them at all, in fact. *if it's a DHCP network, you've a couple of options, including: add an entry to your DHCP config that ensures that the MAC addresses for those users' PCs are always given the same IP addresses; give those users' PCs static IP addresses that are outside the range in your DHCP config (much easier). |

No, I mean try the other stick of ram. Either one has the possibility of being bad, see, so make sure you test each on separately. Everyone, including myself, always says how much money they have to save for their wedding, etc, and everyone I know who was in this position, including myself, managed to sneak an extra PC upgrade or two. After all, what are you going to get for gifts? Plates? Oooooh. Need to get something for yourself too, man. I believe I can fly......urk.

Hardware thread, yadda.. Ever since I started using my D-Link DI-604 router, I lose my connections fairly periodically. I'm not going to notice it just browsing--but for example, I'll get dropped from IRC, my MSN will disconnect, and I'm sure it would cause a problem with games if I played any online lately. Is this some setting I may have messed up? "And I'm saying without a relationship with God and those strong convictions HE put in me I wouldn't be a 42 year old who hasn't had sex with anyone today."

Could be. Could be a bad router. Could be a dying modem - my old Cisco 675 did the exact same thing. Could be a cat 5 cable with a short in it. Could be your service provider sucking ass. Could be aliens. I believe I can fly......urk.
