what motherboard do you have? Chipset? I assume it's old because of the TNT2 card. Older boards cannot support the Radeon, or even some GeForce cards, because the AGP slot just doesn't have the juice. I believe I can fly......urk.

This is a brand new computer(from cyberpower), but I had it shipped without an OS due to the fact that I had XP at home. Wouldn't work though, so I put 2K(and 98, the card worked on both of them) on and now I'm giving it another go. my motherboard: Shuttle SIS 648 648 AS45 w/ 8X AGP 533FSB and USB 2.0 basically this comp with a few modifications. Maybe it's just my luck, who knows. I've got it all.

So it's posting with the 9700? Garbled colourful display is usually power supply, try swapping it. You remember to connect the radeon to a floppy cable, right? Open 'em wide

Will it boot properly into Safe Mode? You can twiddle with display options to see if that's a problem. |

No. There is a known problem with teh SiS 648 chipset and the Radeon. Actually, with many 8x supporting boards and the Radeon, and it's the motherboard makers fault. Things you can do: Make sure you have the most current bios for the motherboard Go into the BIOS and set it to 4X AGP. The difference between 4 and 8x is like a frame a second, so it's not a big loss. Hopefully, this will allow you to install the card under XP. Make sure you use the most current Catalyst drivers. Install XP with the older TNT card. When Windows is done installing, then switch to the Radeon. When Windows detects the card and asks to search for new drivers, don't. Instead, launch ATI's driver program - when it completes, Windows will figure it out. Note: You may still have problems in games after this, because both SiS and VIA screwed up their 8x implementation. The Radeon appears to love Intel boards and the NForce 2. I believe I can fly......urk.

More Tech Talk: I currently have a SB Live! in my computer which also has an onboard soundcard (disablet of course). I'm pretty sure my PC takes a pretty big performance hit in certain games because of the SB Live! card, so I'm considering taking it out and enabling the onboard thingy. Are onboard soundcards generally okay for mp3 listening and gaming? I have a Logitech Z-340 2.1 if that means anything. That's a big trunk. It fits a tuba, a suitcase, a dead dog, and a garment bag almost perfectly.

Depends on the gaming. You won't get the whizbang 3D effects, and you'll lose a few voices, but if you aren't playing with a 5.1 surround sound speaker setup...it won't really matter that much. Depending on the bitrate, .mp3 files will sound about the same. I'm not sure the system performance will be much improved. You'll get a couple IRQ's back though. |

That Terrible Mr.Grimshaw mp3 is terribly unfunny and about 3 minutes longer than it should be. Moreover, the schtick was tired when they remixed the Kingpin voice samples 4+ years ago. Just to save you the time, because I care so much: "Blah blah blah, Bailey hates everything, I'm an witless fuckwhiner, HULAHUGLHUALGHGH." It's a pigbird, obviously.

Ah, the hardware thread.. I have a network question - as there might be a chance that some of you know about this: What do i need to do to use 2 DSL modems on a network, in a way that i can choose what user uses what modem (but shared with several (10+) pc's)? I suppose i need to try & give them an IP and use that IP as the gateway, but are there some things i need to be aware of? *sigh*

Jen Depends on the onboard sound, really. On board sound usually causes a bigger performance hit than a Live card will, and generally don't play music files as well. However, if you have say, an NForce board, the sound is just as nice and usually you take a smaller hit than with the older Live card. But CPU utilization is under 10 percent on the Live cards. E-ph0nk Uh, typically you cannot use 2 DSL modem off a single land line, so I assume you have more than one. I have no idea, other than using 2 different routers, one for each modem. The router assigns the IPs, but I suppose you could use some sort of NAT addressing somehow. Set one modem to send all nats to router one, and one modem to send all nats to router two. If you have cisco modems, it would be something like set nat entry add 10.0.0.2 for the first router. Something. I'm just sorta guessing here, not knowing your setup. I believe I can fly......urk.

LPM + Warren + hardware people: Remember that problem that I was having with UT2K3 crashing? I get a BSOD after a while playing any levels and I can cause a crash 100% of the time simply by loading BR: Slaughterhouse. It crashes referencing NV4_disp.dll. It's a Geforce3 vanilla, Asus 8200, CLEAN INSTALL of NVidia's 41.09. The RAM is 2 x 512MB PC2100 NO NAME BUDGET RAM. Warren: is there anything notable about that Slaughterhouse level that can help isolate the problem? That problem was the reason that I just bought the new Motherboard and CPU. The problem still exists so that narrows it down to VIDEO CARD or RAM. Which would you guys suggest I try first? I figure it might be the RAM as the video card calls it to push out through AGP, right? For fuck's sake. Also LPM: When I buy new RAM, what exactly was the reason for not going 400MHz DDR? I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.

LPMiller: It's for a company where I wrote (intranet) software for. They are with +20 pc's on one DSL, and that's way too slow. They can now choose between two things: Get a leased line (=very expensive) or get a second DSL account/modem. There are only 4-5 people who need "faster internet" - so my suggestion was to put those on a seperate line/modem. They currently have one router (don't know the brand) - so i'f i'm correct the only thing they need is another router? There are some other things that might make it a bit harder: They still need to be able to use the internal mail server & pass through the company's firewall. *sigh*

That problem was the reason that I just bought the new Motherboard and CPU. The problem still exists so that narrows it down to VIDEO CARD or RAM. You bought a new motherboard and processor before testing your memory? Just checkin'... There's a big leap from looking at the sun to making a hydrogen bomb. In between, you just go blind.

Needed to anyway - Figured that the VIA chipset was the culprit and I read up on the nforce2. I couldn't sleep without having it. I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.

E-p Hmm. Well, like I said, it's beyond me, I imagine Darksied would have a better idea. But a second DSL line isn't going to speed up the internet for 20 people all that much. MCorleone The Nforce 2 performs better with 333 memory than with 400. 400, or PC3100, isn't a true standard. Everyone jumped the gun on it, and the implementation of memory and boards has been a little wanting. 2 sticks on 333 in banks 1 and 3 will give the best performance, at least in all the tests I've seen. It's rare, but possible, for bad ram to cause an nvdisplay error. Sounds more like a borked video card though. Do you have one you could borrow from someone to check? To test the ram, just pull a stick and try again, if it happens, switch sticks. Unlikely they'd both be bad. Also, did you try to reinstall Unreal? Uninstall, delete the directory, then install it in it's default folder. The Doctor is now out for the evening. I believe I can fly......urk.

Re: NV4_disp.dll crash I got something like that opening the deck on morrowind. I'm using driver version 4.1.0.3 now to get around that. It's probably a specific shader that's in sight. Get Wet. Do the Raindance.

If I picture what you are doing correctly, then adding a second router will do the trick so long as it has a fixed IP address that is not identical to the first router. One machine acts as outgoing gateway and DNS for the isolated machines, the other acts as outgoing gateway and DNS for the rest. I don't see it impacting the incoming mail in the slightest as those activities are taking place between a series of machines which are communicating directly with one another and not through the router. |

Since this is the current hardware thread. I think my 21" Viewsonic G810 just died. The picture disappears after 5-10 seconds after switching to a high resolution upon startup. I backed it down to 1024x768 and lowered the refresh rate to 70hz, but it still can't hold the picture. Cycling the power will bring the picture back for another few seconds. I switched to an old MAG 17" monitor that I use when building/diagnosing other people's machines, and it is holding the image just fine. The monitor was at least 4 years old so I guess I got my money's worth out of it. Anyone had a similar problem and/or know if it can be fixed easily? It sounds like it is time for a new monitor. I had a problem like that with a realy old CGA monitor... It was overheating. We solved it by using a pen cap to keep a hot metal plate away from a heat sensor. Worked great for another year, then some of the internal components melted. =) -chris |

Problem: I switched Video cards so that I could install Windows XP. Now I'd like to switch back but whenever I do that it freezes up again at the boot screen. ATI Radeon 9700 btw... so my question, is there any way I can install the drivers before I manually put the card back in? I've tried downloading them from the site, doing it from the CD, etc, but since the card isn't in there at the time it won't install. Any suggestions? Install the new drivers in safe mode. You may have to do a manual install through the hardware devices screen. I had a similar problem with my Radeon64Mb VIVO. Windows would install fine, but would refuse to boot. I managed to get into safe mode, but Windows wouldn't recognize my video card. However, by manually installing the correct drivers, everything was fine. A bunch of feathered DEUS EX MACHINAS come out of NOWHERE and save EVERYBODY.

It won't go into safe mode :\ Whenever I try to boot up in any safe mode my screen gets colored lines and freezes. Doesn't look so good. I'll try working with the BIOS some, thanks to everyone for the help! I've got it all.

Maybe just not play on BR-Slaughterhouse. It was my least favorite map out of the whole game anyway. No, wait, that huge forest with the jump pads, that was worse. At least it was really pretty to look at while you wandered around aimlessly looking for someone to kill. There's a big leap from looking at the sun to making a hydrogen bomb. In between, you just go blind.

Max Payne is DirectX, right? For some reason that plays fine, it's mainly just anything newer like UT2K3 - That leads me to believe it's the RAM. So LPM: You would absolutely 100% of the time avoid the 400MHz stuff, even from a reputable dealer like Kingston? This one doesn't look okay? In other news, I'm very impressed with the nforce audio coming out of here. The driverset utility that comes with it is slick and seems a lot less bloated than Creative's. It's nice to have real surround sound back. Unfortunately I don't have access to a good video card to see if that's the culprit, but I will be upgrading the RAM soon. If that still doesn't fix it I'll go for the low-hanging fruit of a G4ti4200 until the G5FX hits the shelves. Drat. I think the point more isn't that PC3100 is so terribly bad, but it just doesn't gain you much speed, you can get better performance with 333 until the chipset makers revise a bit more. |

Okay question for graphics monkeys and designers, alike: I'm looking to get a new graphics tablet, as my old one won't work with XP (Genius haven't offered updated drivers... cheers), and besides which, the surface has warped with old age. Bleh. I'm willing to spend ~£150 with an absolute limit of £200, but I'm baffled with choice. Basically I'm looking for a minimum of A5 or A4 (hah!) with pressure sensitivity. e-pen seems to do a great budget range, but they really are tiny and have pretty low definition. If they do have a high-end range as well, I have yet to find it... Wacom are great quality, but I don't anticipate myself becing able to afford one any time soon. Genius do massive tablets (46x30cm!) at a little over £100, but I can't find details on the shitty Dabs site about wether it has pressure sensitivity or decent lines per inch. The Genius site is too fucking slow. Any ideas? |

Marsh, Wacom does have smaller "lower end" tablets for general uses, such as the Grahpire2, which is about $99 US. |

McCorleone, DDR333 is recommended for the nforce2 in two sticks because thats what its made for to be optimal, buying DDR400 will decrease performance. |

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that DDR400 sucks or anything, but in regards to the NF2, 333 performs better. I believe I can fly......urk.

MCorleone Slaughterhouse is a large map and it uses a lot of memory, so it's probably one of the few maps that hits the bad part of your RAM. You'll probably also crash loading CTF-December. It's RAM intensive as well. |

Sweet - RAM it is. As far as settling for 333MHz, fast or not, I can't bring myself to do it. I have locked on to my newest purchase. I will settle for nothing less. I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.
