Broadband is your friend.

True, but even on a cable modem that site is slow.  Serving up that many image requests per page is going to slow any site down. especially if it is CPU and/or bandwidth starved.  The animations detract from what should be the main focus of the page, the photo and the comments.

Well, you can see naked pics of my girlfriend online...

BORING.

Caryn

I dunno, I like this one (one of the nudes).

It's nice, but the box one is better. The first one... eh, someone can call it art, but to Joker, it's just free fapping material. I think that says a lot.

The site's been PlanetCrapped!

Seriously, crank everything down to 10k jpg's if you're going to try to serve a digital photography site off a 56k modem.

I think the first comment on this page sums up the site perfectly:

I love Sylvia Plath .. as well as this photograph.

That's my point. I'd like to see people do something a little different.

I think the same thing when I see kids with a mohawk and a torn up leather jacket, or ripped up fishnets and combat boots.  Punks were dressing like that in the early 80's, you would think that they would find a new, more offensive style by now.

Oh, and somewhat on topic, I will be purchasing a Sony DSC-F717 in February, unless anyone can think of a compelling reason not to.

My budget is about $850 for the camera itself (the F717 is MSRP $1k, but it retails for around $850). It has to be 5MP, it has to accept 58mm lens attachments natively, or have a cheap adapter, and it has to store a raw (non-JPG) format of some sort or another. Having an external flash connection wouldn't hurt either. Bonus points if anyone out there makes a firewire card-reader for it, though USB/USB2 is acceptable.

Anyone got a better recommendation? The 5mp models from Cannon and Nikon are both over a grand, and thus out of my budget, and the Powershot G3, while attractive, is not quite as feature-laden as the F717... and since it requires a 58mm adapter, I'm assuming that the overall savings would only be about $150 -- not enough to justify the drop to 4MP and lesser optical zoom.

Oh, and the F717 apparently has some of the best battery life in the field.

Input is greatly appreciated!

I just got a G3 and so far am pretty impressed with it. Though it's 4MP, it holds its own against 5MP cameras.

Brings out the old "Punk's not dead, it was stillborn" argument. If you change the punk look, it's not punk anymore, it's gothabilly or rivethead or emo or whatever the fuck. For something that's supposed to be about discordia and expression, it was in stasis from the first stanza of Anarchy in the UK.

I understand the technical concepts and mastery that is possible in the field of photography. My comment was on the artistic side of photography.

It's certainly possible for technical masters of photography to find a camera shot in any situation that is different and probably more visually pleasing to see than something you would get out of putting the average person in the same situation with a Polaroid, but that wasn't the point. The point is you put the average person in the same situation and in enough tries he's bound to find that same angle or something equally striking. On the great thing called the internet you get to see all of those attempts by all of those people, unfiltered. I'm just saying its not as interesting to me for that reason, I'd much rather browse through observational drawings where technical mastery and an eye for the artists subject is much more clear - along with their personal style, and that's what art is built on.

The theory you're applying to photography is essentially the "infinite monkeys, infinite time, get the works of shakespeare" theory, which can be applied to any type of art.

And which is bullshit.

Yotsuya, I'm never happy enough with my pics to put them up somewhere public like that.  Maybe eventually i'll be good enough, or get lucky and take some pics I really love, but not right now.  I just took about 130 pics over my Christmas break, and I'm happy with maybe...three of them, and none of them are "great".

Plus, I have no exhibitionist goth girlfriend. (Or re: Caryn's complaint/request, no redhead girlfriend, or black girlfriend.)

Speaking of pics, over Christmas I took some of this cool jewelry store in Philly I loved to visit when I lived there (even though I don't really actually wear jewelry, it was just cool, and I bought gifts there occasionally).

It's owned by this guy Henri David, who's this sort of socialite/impressario in the artsy/funky/gay community of Philadelphia.  Every year he hosts a huge Halloween ball for the hip and freaky folks.

The store itself is called Halloween as well (it's his favorite holiday).

The place was in the middle of being renovated when I visited, so the walls aren't decorated as usual.  But it's still a damn cool place.
