Yuppy And The Alien
November 12th 2002, 16:56 CET by deadlock

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City has been out a few days now and I'm sure a few of you have picked it up - I know I have. I'd like to know your opinions on it.

How does it rate against GTA3? Was the move to give the central character a name and a voice a good one? Pulled off any wild tricks on a motorbike? Just how annoying are the load times, anyway? Any thoughts at all that you have, post 'em in this thread.

Since this is PlanetCrap, I'll wrap this up with....

I found one source, not full, but it's a valid hash, it would seem.

I'm just grabbing it to keep in practice, I am so buying that film.

GTA:VC is a great game. It's something that one can really sit down and really sink a couple of hours into if you're willing. For me, that's a long period of playing time. My gaming usually come in smaller increments because of my schedule and my overwhelming need for sleep. However, VC made me pull some later nights than I would have with a regular game.

What I think LC gets done very well, better than Liberty City (LC) is a sense of "fuller " world. I feel like I had more places to go and asphault to skid on in LC but VC seems more densely packed in a lesser space(the helicoptor helps VC feel "fuller" as well. The islands are big but alot of that is taken up by beach, golf course, and airport which are not used that frequently. Sure, I have caught a couple bugs and some of the missions have seem unusually unbalanced yet none of that detracts that much from the fun I've been having.

Motorcycles: Awesome.
I find I spend alot of my time just trying to trick my motocycle off things, trials type stuff. VC really is the current epitome of a "sandbox"-type of game(SP). It's filled to the brim with numerous tasks, missions, tricks, games, searches, whatever. Plus many people seem to just be content to run around and interact with the world in whatever manner suits their mood. Not many games give people that feeling I think.

*covering my ears so the Mamet dialogue isn't ruined

Forced to watch, Mamet would probably break down sobbing, desperately renouncing method acting. The butchered dialogue would be Abe Burrows', though. (Or, really, whatever poor screenwriter gets tasked with it).

Thief 3 is gonna be so good. You consolephiles are gonna be cryin' then!!!

Is there any reason to believe it won't also come out for consoles? Other than blind hope.

Considering Deus Ex got a console release, I'd say it seems somewhat probable that DE2 and Thief3 could easily head down that road.  Of course, the DE1 console release was, I think, more than a year later than the PC release.

I just played the demo for the new James Bond game.  I hate to judge the game by one level, but what a pile of festering dogshit.  I feel like I'm floating a few inches off the ground.  And six or seven shotgun blasts don't bring down some lowlife with a rifle.

I would go with the defense that they are both ripoffs from something like Robotech, which would put  both Marsh and Legend in the wrong.

I've wanted to see Glengarry Glen Ross, despite the title, for a while but I'm nervous about it. The only David Mamet film I've seen so far is Heist, and that's one of the few movies I've come to actively hate. The dialogue is just smarmy and really dumb. I'm a fan of Aaron Sorkin, so I'm used to the "rapid fire, repeating stuff back and forth" style of conversation, but this movie takes it to ridiculous heights.

"What about The Job?"
"The Job stands."
"The Job stands?"
"The Job stands."
"But we can't do The Job now..."
"The Job stands!"
"Man, The Job is dead."
"No, The Job stands!"
"...We've got to do The Job."
...
etc. etc. for 10 freakin' minutes.

Not only that, when they're not filling up space, they pull out lines that should be clever, are set up to be clever, have every opportunity to be clever, said as if they're clever and thought provoking, but don't make any sense. "My motherfucker's so cool, sheep count him." <dramatic pause> Oh damn, that was cool. Wow that was...wait, what the hell? What's so cool about sheep countin him? "Everybody wants it, that's why it's called money!" <comedic pause> Haha, that's so true. Yea...well, actually, that's not funny, or true.

So you coudl say I have some reservations about David Mamet's style, from my one sample of it. I've heard so much about Glengarry Glen Ross though, that I'm willing to give him another shot...also the movie sounds more my style...more then Heist anyway, where by the end of the movie I didn't care about the twists and turns because I just hated each and every character. I on't know...how similar are the movies?

I loved Heist, I bought it.  One of the reasons I loved it was the dialog.

Heist Movie + Mamet dialog + Gene Hackman + Ricky Jay + Delroy Lindo = Awesome.

The only guy I didn't like was the slimy bad-guy nephew of DeVito's.  He's the slimy bad-guy though so you're supposed to hate him.

8/10

Ronin was a cool movie, except that the jerky too-close camera work made my eyes hurt.  Not as bad as Die Hard 3, but still if your'e going to make a multi-million dollar movie, blow a couple thousand on a fucking steady-cam.

You're sliding down my "People who have an opinion I value" list.  Be careful you don't fall off.

"My motherfucker's so cool, sheep count him."

For the hell of it, the actual quote is : "My motherfucker's so cool, when he goes to sleep, sheep count him."  Not that it makes anymore sense with the added words, it at least puts it in a context.

Ronin caused me to fall in love with a car company.  I'm the furthest from a car-person you'll ever find, but because of Ronin I fell in love with Audi.  My dream car is a TT, unfortunately my first car won't be an Audi but most likely a Jetta.

Warren - My favourite is when Hackman beats on the guy with his "Ever cheat on your wife/girlfriend?" story.  Awesome, awesome stuff.  That and Ricky Jay's "Cute as a Chinese baby" and other sayings.

I'm watching it again tonight :)
