Who 0wnz the Server?
September 26th 2002, 09:18 CEST by HiredGoons

Who pays for the bandwidth for all the servers that are displayed in All Seeing Eye?

Are they all provided by philanthropically minded gamers?

Maybe I'm too jaded, but that doesn't seem likely.

More likely scenario: A lot of these servers use corporation or university networks.  Corporations and universities are like blind liquor store owners.  If they knew what was going on underneath their noses, they wouldn't fund it.

And if my experience with blind liquor store owners has taught me anything, it is that for every blind liquor store owner there is always a "helpful" assistant manager who offers to take inventory at the end of the night.

That's what's happening isn't it?

Isn't this freeloading?

Possible interesting twist:  Are publishers/devs freeloading too?  Valve or whoever benefits from this too, don't they?

Thousands of servers running CS, and it doesn't cost Valve a cent -- that isn't exactly bad for Valve is it?

I'll stop now and wait for the PC regulars to show me the error of my ways.  Or kill me in my sleep.

Yes it is a joke and I値l probably loose a limb for saying that but now you can see that flaming some one for some grammar is a little much.
In my case I was just to busy multitasking to stop and read it.
Besides in school I spent most of my time sitting in the hall so missed out on allot.

In Croatia, we have a pretty good deal. Good servers are hosted by Internet providers. We have 5-6 of such "national" Counter-Strike servers, 4 Quake 3 servers, a few Battlefield 1942, etc. Providers are, of course, aware of the fact. They actually promote those servers through their portals/web sites. If a server is down or hiccups, some poor night shift guy gets a shitload of complaints.

And we have a a habit of putting passwords on "our" servers if when there are so many foreigners that our people can't join. Bit of a "cosa nostra" - and nobody steals anything.

Netdisruptor,

Correct grammar can be used with all sorts of words, from scientific to common to slang.  Proper sentence structure and spelling is important in conveying meaning, even when calling someone a camporing faggot.  Although in that case "correct spelling and grammar" is more loosely defined.

I'm so pleased with myself.  The new happy hippie Jeet is calm and collected and was in no way tempted to say anything unpleasent or rude or crass to the latest assfaced zit-encrusted monkey butt everyone is so admirably being civil to.

Back in the olden times, before I was a reformed and productive member of society, I would probably have asked him if he somehow managed to save his severed limb so that I name it and beat him with Mister Stumpy Fuck.

However, the new happy hippie Jeet doesn't do things like that anymore.  I don't wish to offend anyone, no matter how repulsively stupid they may come across as being.  Instead, I merely wish to spread a message of love and peace, and of cosmic harmony.

So please, take this flower:

No, Max....I just watched the Travel Channel the other night, it mentioned Seattle, and all of a sudden strange hippie ideas crept into my head, and I needed to let them out.

It was either that or grow a stupid shitspot under my bottom lip, grab a beret, and hang out in lame coffee houses all day long snapping my fingers at lame Queensryche homage poetry....

....but I really didn't want to change my name to Pasha and get beat up on the playground by a swarm of giggling six year old girls, so I opted to vent it all out of my system here.  At Planetcrap.  Amongst my friends.  That loathe me.  Um.  Fuck.
