Cg: nVidious Plot or Graphical Revolution?
June 20th 2002, 01:55 CEST by m0nty

Slipping in amongst the news of Morrowind, NWN and WarCraft 3, nVidia and Microsoft have unveiled what they claim is the strongest push yet to bring cinematic-quality real-time graphics from the movie screen to the PC. The introduction in version 9 of Microsoft's DirectX of a High-Level Shading Language (HLSL), revealed earlier in 2002 and which has just gone into beta, have been trumped by nVidia, which has announced a high-level programming language called Cg - short for "C for graphics".

The common, familiar C-like syntax enables rapid development of stunning, real-time shaders and visual effects for graphics platforms, and is compatible with Microsoft's recently announced High Level Shading Language for DirectX® 9.0.

With Microsoft around, you know there will always be standards issues (remember OpenGL?), and this is no different. Cg represents nVidia's latest salvo in its battle with ATI and other graphics card vendors for the hearts and minds of developers over their preferred programmable shaders and 3D APIs. The vendors have already started attacking each others' DX9 support, and Cg brings a whole new set of arguments about cross-platform implementation and proprietary technologies. Let the new standards war begin!

If there is to be a war, nVidia surely have the metaphorical SoF2 briefcase camped beyond all hope of the terrorists escaping with it. In this interview with nVidia svengali David Kirk conducted by new Eurogamer offshoot Gamesindustry.biz, HLCL is even characterised as "Microsoft's own implementation of Cg", suggesting that nVidia is dictating terms to the dreaded Redmondians. Kirk fends off the inevitable question about incompatibility with non-nVidia hardware thusly:

"Our compiler generates shader code and sends it to DirectX or OpenGL, and shaders are a standard, so they should run on any card that supports the shader standards, including our competitors? Besides, I think it's in our interest to make sure that Cg runs well on everything - we want people to really use this technology, and that's all about taking away their reasons not to... Making the compiler so that it didn't work well on ATI cards, for example, would be really bad for us too."

Do you trust this man? Has nVidia created Cg out of the goodness of its heart, or is it really just another attack on its competitors? Does it matter, or should we just accept nVidia's dominance of the graphics card market? Will the majority of programmers choose Cg with all its supporting apps, or play it safe with the more limited HLCL? Will Cg become the new Glide - the troublesome rendering technology that was left behind when 3Dfx died? What does it mean for graphical engine makers, like id, Epic and Lithtech? What does this mean to games already in development: will they have to redo parts of their code? (Hi George B!)

This was on the UFO website..

In England, Carlton Visual Entertainment is releasing UFO on DVD in two deluxe sets each containing 4 discs, plus they are also releasing 8 individual volumes with separate packaging. The first deluxe set was released in March 2002 and the second is due in June 2002. The individual volumes will all be released by August 2002. So far, the video and audio quality is superb, and is certainly much better than any past video release or broadcast. These DVDs also include a nice variety of extras, including a few short deleted scenes, episode commentary from Gerry Anderson (IDENTIFIED) and Ed Bishop (SUB-SMASH), lots of never-before-seen publicity and behind-the-scenes photos, and somewhat speculative information about SHADO and it's main characters. Although this is being marketed as a Region 2 DVD, the discs are in fact region-free, so they will play without problem in non-Region 2 countries with the PAL video standard (e.g., Australia).

In America, A&E Home Video is also releasing UFO on DVD in two large sets. The first of these sets will be available in July 2002.

In France, TF1 Video is releasing all 26 episodes of UFO in one large set in July 2002. This set will have 7 discs, and be in the PAL format (not SECAM). There will be two audio tracks on this DVD -- one with the dialog dubbed into French, and the other with the original English soundtrack but with forced French subtitles.

I'm the one who mentioned DeepDiscountDVD, and yea I've had no problems with them. Their free shipping may take a while because it ships media mail (ie, whenever the USPS feels like it), but DDD's been reliable for me, and from what I hear they're responsive if you have any problems (I haven't had any myself).

Thanks for the heads up on the Vista Series, and no I don't have any other version of the Sixth Sense, so I figured this would be the best version to get. I know it's missing a few things from the other version, but the packaging is too cool to pass up. =)

900 DVDs is impressive, but I think the record goes to some of those folks at the DVD talk forums, I think one had around 3,000 or something...how anyone has any time to watch three thousand, I don't know.

The Wombles seem like some sort of precusor/ripoff of Fraggle Rock? I never got past the front page.

Anime sucks.  Really it does.  Even Akira.  Even Ghost in the Shell.  Even Mononoke.  Even Kiki's Delivery Service.

I won't even bother to describe all the various ways in which the lesser anime are all pretty much one steaming pile of like-minded dung.

You just named the lesser anime.

Matt- Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Between that and PBS's The Civil War, I gotta start saving the pennies.

I remember watching UFO late at night on a local TV station. I remember the opening. They show all this futuristic stuff that looked like it was designed in the 1960s (which it was), then they flashed the year this all took place in. Just the thought of it makes me laugh. Apparently, there was a short period of time in the 1980s that I missed.

Anime sucks.

In your opinion.

Anime has no artistic merit.

Does it have to?  I sit it along the same line as games.  Its entertainment.  Does anime as a medium need to be redefined, too?

And now that everyone and his 3 little brothers thinks that Dragonball Z is so damn cool you don't even get "I'm cool because I like non-mainstream stuff" cred from anime anymore.  Its over.  Move on.

If you're watching anime for an "I'm cool because I like non-mainstream stuff" cred, then you're watching it for entirely the wrong reason.  And your idea of "cool" is a bit skewered.

If you're into your British TV comedy then you owe it to yourself to buy series 1 & 2 of Spaced on DVD.  It's like the televisual equivalent of a big spliff... laugh until it hurts sorta stuff.  Plus it's about a computer game playing, comic book reading, Episode I hating, 20-something - so empathize dammit!

And hey, it's worth it for the Resident Evil homage alone.

If folks are into good DVD commentary tracks, check out Bound, the movie the Wachowski brothers made before making the Matrix.  Wonderful stuff about how the movie was made, how various shots were pulled off, the brothers are funny, most of the rest of the cast shows up to comment, and hey, the movie is good too.

I'd like to think a lucky bastard...  Though I can't seem to influence the theory at all.  The one woman she's found that she thinks she could potentially, maybe, kinda be someone she's attracted to is Angelina Jolie.  Which is just plain wrong to me.

Then again, she also thinks David Bowie is attractive, so your guess is as good as mine.

Corky/Gina Gershon was insanely hot, I agree.  And even Jennifer Tilly, who usually is too flaky, pulled off sort of calculating vibe her role required in the film.  And of course, she was very...lush, physically.

I'll pretend your playfully teasing me, because I know you're actually trying to twist a voodoo knife into my soul.

According to imdb, he'll be 51 in October.  I would have guessed he was a few years younger -- but the magic of television, make up, time machine etc. would help in that area.

If 51 is the prevailing conception of "old" around here, it's no wonder I have such strong disagreements with everybody.  Computers are a young business and all that.  They said that more than 20 years ago too.
