Cg: nVidious Plot or Graphical Revolution?
June 20th 2002, 01:55 CEST by m0nty Slipping in amongst the news of Morrowind, NWN and WarCraft 3, nVidia and Microsoft have unveiled what they claim is the strongest push yet to bring cinematic-quality real-time graphics from the movie screen to the PC. The introduction in version 9 of Microsoft's DirectX of a High-Level Shading Language (HLSL), revealed earlier in 2002 and which has just gone into beta, have been trumped by nVidia, which has announced a high-level programming language called Cg - short for "C for graphics". The common, familiar C-like syntax enables rapid development of stunning, real-time shaders and visual effects for graphics platforms, and is compatible with Microsoft's recently announced High Level Shading Language for DirectX® 9.0. With Microsoft around, you know there will always be standards issues (remember OpenGL?), and this is no different. Cg represents nVidia's latest salvo in its battle with ATI and other graphics card vendors for the hearts and minds of developers over their preferred programmable shaders and 3D APIs. The vendors have already started attacking each others' DX9 support, and Cg brings a whole new set of arguments about cross-platform implementation and proprietary technologies. Let the new standards war begin! If there is to be a war, nVidia surely have the metaphorical SoF2 briefcase camped beyond all hope of the terrorists escaping with it. In this interview with nVidia svengali David Kirk conducted by new Eurogamer offshoot Gamesindustry.biz, HLCL is even characterised as "Microsoft's own implementation of Cg", suggesting that nVidia is dictating terms to the dreaded Redmondians. Kirk fends off the inevitable question about incompatibility with non-nVidia hardware thusly: "Our compiler generates shader code and sends it to DirectX or OpenGL, and shaders are a standard, so they should run on any card that supports the shader standards, including our competitors? Besides, I think it's in our interest to make sure that Cg runs well on everything - we want people to really use this technology, and that's all about taking away their reasons not to... Making the compiler so that it didn't work well on ATI cards, for example, would be really bad for us too." Do you trust this man? Has nVidia created Cg out of the goodness of its heart, or is it really just another attack on its competitors? Does it matter, or should we just accept nVidia's dominance of the graphics card market? Will the majority of programmers choose Cg with all its supporting apps, or play it safe with the more limited HLCL? Will Cg become the new Glide - the troublesome rendering technology that was left behind when 3Dfx died? What does it mean for graphical engine makers, like id, Epic and Lithtech? What does this mean to games already in development: will they have to redo parts of their code? (Hi George B!) |

AF- Are you serious? Bummer :P Yeah. My thinking was that nobody liked Tron enough to warrant a special edition, so I might as well just pick up the shitty edition. Same thing happened with Platoon, but I kind of saw that one coming. |
|
It has atmosphere and very good art direction (copied in absurdum afterwards), I give it that. Oh, and pretty good acting, but the script and pacing is horrible. When Kevin Spacey hands himself into their hands, it just makes the whole movie up to that point totally worthless. It wasn't even very suspenseful in the end either. Oh, almost forgot the IMO. There. "It goes without saying that technical proficiency should be the first acquistion of a student who would be a fine pianist." - Sergei Rachmaninov

That 'flippiing the DVD over' shit is truly annoying. I have 2 DVD's like that ... Seven and Stargate. I don't know why anyone would print a DVD in that format. I don't think dual-layered discs were in the original spec (I know some of the old DVD players can't read them), so they had to use both sides of the disc to fit the movie. Not that I don't hate having to flip it over mid-feature -- just saying. I don't mind double-sided DVDs if one side's an alternate, pan & scan version of the film. Having the choice is kind of neat. |
|
AF- I agree. However, I like what they did with Shrek- They gave you 2 DVDs- one widescreen, one standard. Both had different special features on them, so it's not like the second disc was totally wasted. Does anyone know if they re-released Goodfellas? I know from research you had to flip it over. Personally, I think it would ruin the flow of the film to have to flip it over. It's not like my 2 Disc "The Ten Commandments" DVD, where you have a clear intermission point. Goodfellas is supposedto be re-released, but there hasn't been a date set last I heard. Kind of in the same boat as Office Space, where a re-release has been announced in some form (supposedly for this year), but there hasn't been any news of it since...and its so tempting with the original OS so cheap, but I know if I buy it, they'll set the date the day after... Dual layer came out later, but was always planned for DVD. It just didn't make it in time for release. What's sad though, is some companies STILL release flipper disks. I just had to get a new player, because my Pioneer 503 kept spitting out discs at the layer change. Happened more with Disney films than any other kind though. I believe I can fly......urk.

Really? Which recent films are flippers? Arizona Diamondbacks 2001 World Series Champions

I dunno, I don't log them by name and date of release. But if you read www.digitalbits.com you'll hear 'em bitch about it now and then. I believe I can fly......urk.

Wow. THANKS FOR THE LINK! I just found this out... Also, we'd heard the date before, but our friends over at BTTF.com have apparently confirmed it - the Back to the Future Trilogy will street 12/17. And for those of you like me heavy on the nostalgia factor: We've got more word on Paramount titles from a host of sources, not the least of which are retail contacts. Look for the release of the long-awaited Grease DVD on September 17th. And as we mentioned yesterday, Saturday Night Fever and Staying Alive are indeed coming in the 3rd Qtr - October 8th to be specific, along with Urban Cowboy, Flashdance and Footloose. The studio will not confirm at this time, but announcements are expected sooner rather than later. Looks like its a toe-tappin' good time on disc from the mountain this Fall. Guess the Travolta film festival is at my house this fall. :P Arizona Diamondbacks 2001 World Series Champions

Last count: 174 DVD's. I am packrat, hear me roar. I believe I can fly......urk.

I think I own maybe 40 or 50. Nearly caught up with my CD collection, which I've been building for about five times as long. :P -chris |

I buy only DVDs now, in both Anime and regular films. I still buy the kids VHS tapes, except for a few DVDs that have great features. Arizona Diamondbacks 2001 World Series Champions

kids = watch the same movie 1000000000 times. =) |
|
I think I've finally cracked the 200 DVD mark. I recently put all of them onto a shelf and quickly realized that just the non-anime stuff took up 2 1/2 of 3 shelves -- with nowhere to put the anime. Curses and foils. Not bad for 1 year and 3 months of collecting. -Jon

I only just recently started buying DVDs...I was kind of late on the pick up on that. So far I only own (and you're going to laugh at my collection) The Great Escape special edition, Monty Python and the Holy Grail special edition, The Beatle's Yellow Submarine, Harry Potter special edition, and The Prisoner 10 DVD set. See, I told you you'd laugh... "I don't get mad. I get stabby."

I have the South Park movie, Fight Club, Reqiuem for a Dream, Memento, A Clockwork Orange, Episode 1, Broken Arrow, and Face/Off. And that is all. So there.

Some highlights from my collection: here and here as well as seven samurai, memento, and shrek. We've also revolutionized the boob technology

Hmmmm........ Gems of my collection are the Godfather box set, the Rocky box set, the Kimagure Orange Road box set, Citizen Kane, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Roshomon, and, of course, The Last Dragon. Arizona Diamondbacks 2001 World Series Champions

Hmmm... I basically don't buy DVDs if they're not hefty collector editions anymore. A 20 minute "making of" featurette and a trailer aren't going to do it for me. Once in a while I make an exception, but usually I just rent. Recent purchases include the Godfather collection, The French Connection I and II special editions, Jeeves and Wooster 1st season, Almost Famous Untitled (special ed), couple others. It's funny... if I'd have had DVDs in high school, I'd never have gone into computers as a career. I'd have gone to film school. I think I've actually watched the location footage on the Fight Club special edition more times than I've watched the regular movie, and I *know* I've listened to the commentary more times. Ditto most of the other special edition discs I own. I'm totally fascinated by the film making process. I would gladly pay for a special edition of nearly any movie that featured between two and six hours of on-location footage... even if it was a movie I didn't really like. -chris |
|
My DVD collection has become sentient it's so large ... I've filled 2 1/2 floor racks now. I haven't counted recently, but it's well over 300 DVD's for sure ... I don't buy as many as I used to though. I have most everything I want (I only need to buy 1 or 2 new releases a month now). "It's pretty common for pussies, dumbasses, and their families to blame their problems on vague influences like the media and society. The truth is, fuck you."

|
Of course, I am but a white belt in the shadow of the DVD sensei, Shane Caudle (lead artist at Epic). He's got over 900 DVD's and still going strong ... "It's pretty common for pussies, dumbasses, and their families to blame their problems on vague influences like the media and society. The truth is, fuck you."
|
|
Chris- I agree. Listening to Coppola talk about making the Godfather on the Commentary Track taught me more about the art of filmmaking than any book or class I have taken. The 1 1/2 Making of Tron Feature was fascinating, and The Battle Over Citizen Kane DVD that came with the movie was solid. I agree- I get mad when the SPECIAL FEATURES are French, Egyptian, Dutch, Spanish, and Swahili subtitles, 2 crappy trailers (why do most of the trailers look like crap, BTW?) and commercials for OTHER DVDs. I want alternate angles! I want full-lenght making of productions! I want meaningful commentary and content! I want deleted scenes! 2 of my DVDs give me everything I want: My Boogie Nights Special Edition 2 Disc set, and Superman The Movie. I wish they all could be like these. "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" is a great DVD set. If you're into Kevin Smiths movies, the second DVD of special features is great stuff. If you're into directors, Robert Rodriguez does some of the best audio tracks I've ever come across. The ones for 'El Mariachi' and 'Desperado' are really excellent. He talks about how each scene was made, how they made various effects happen and throws in funny stories here and there. Some audio tracks have large tracts of dead space, but his are non-stop entertainment. "It's pretty common for pussies, dumbasses, and their families to blame their problems on vague influences like the media and society. The truth is, fuck you."

I have only one DVD: 2001. A question: if you could only have one DVD from your collection, which would it be? |
|
My collection is small so far, but growing at an alarming rate. The picks are fairly electic so far IMO... Ones that I own (that I can remember off the top of my head)...Simpsons: Season 1, Bridge on the River Kwai, Snatch, Network, Three Kings(my first DVD), Citizen Kane, Cowboy Bebop disc#2 (yes, only that one), Dumb and Dumber, 8 1/2, Analyze This, 2001, L.A. Confidential, and about 5-10 others. On order right now and arriving sometime soon...Dr. Zhivago, Simpsons: Season 2, Usual Suspects SE, Dr. Strangelove, Forrest Gump, Sixth Sense Vista Series. In the very near future (like within a few days)...David Blaine: Fearless, Radiohead: Meeting People is Easy. In the semi-near future...Godfather Set, any future Simpsons sets, Shawshank Redemption, Contact, Pulp Fiction SE, Office Space (if the SE ever comes out or I give in to temptation), Terminator 2, the rest of the Cowboy Bebop discs. I never really buy based on extras...I just get the movies I like, and if it has a lot of extra stuff then groovy. If I could have only one...probably the Simpsons (any season, but the later ones would be nice since they have more episodes), I can watch Simpsons episodes over and over again. By the way, if you liked Fight Club, you might want to pick it up quick Fox plans to replace the current edition with a one disc version soon... Warren Marshall 900 DVDs? Sheesh. I'm just a glass hoppa too then. |

People in euroland looking for amazing DVD bargains should look at play.com they only do the more popular stuff, but they're also an amazing bargain for music, dvds and games. |

Warren: You've mentioned Shane's collection before, and I'm still on my knees, prostrating. I could never name a favorite DVD. I've just got too many that I enjoy watching. And I'll watch my entire collection through in a couple months. One week I'll be really into Robotech or Gundam and watch that all the time, then next it'll be Jackie Chan flicks or Stargate and other SciFi. I dunno, my most treasured single DVD (non-box set) would be Jackie Chan: My Stunts. Its like one huge DVD extra. Some 2+ hours talking about all of Jackie's stunts in many of his films, about the cheap effects used (like cardboard and mattresses for cushioning a jump and blood packets). Absolutely cool, he'll actually make up stunts to do in his 'lab' to do without much of any practice. But like I said, I could never pick just one DVD. -Jon

Was there someone here that suggested DeepDiscountDVD.com? I've looked at the place a couple times and found some amazing prices and really would like to know if its a trustworthy site. -Jon

|
My favorite set? Brazil Criterion Collection. Very weird and cool movie. This collection includes the U.S. cut of the movie(with a happier ending), and the original Terry Gilliam version(not so happy). 3 DVD's long, with one full of only extras like the costume designers take on "the couture of fantasy and fascism. |
|
BabiG, watch out for the Sixth Sense Vista unless you don't have another sixth sense DVD. It doesn't really add much to the package. |
|
If you're into directors, Robert Rodriguez does some of the best audio tracks I've ever come across. Cameron Crowe does awesome commentary on Say Anything and Almost Famous Bootleg Cut. In fact, on Say Anything he starts the commentary 20 minutes before the movie starts and talks about how he picked the actors and got the film ready. Really interesting. |
|
I just realized since no one has posted on this thread for 3 hours I'm probably talking to myself. So how are you jjohnsen? |
|
Only one DVD? Big Trouble In Little China. Awesome DVD. But mostly, all I care about is a DTS or 5.1 soundtrack, and widescreen, maybe a commentary if it doesn't suck. Extras just don't mean all that much to me, from a purchase standpoint. I believe I can fly......urk.
|
|
The Brazil 3-disc set is fabulous. The Love Conquers All edition of the film is hilarious. i like monkeys. are you a monkey?

#169 by Squeaky Some highlights from my collection Monty Python's Flying Circus: Complete Collection DVD I envy you the Monty Python collection, everytime I talk myself into buying it I back off. On the flip side if there was a complete Marx Brothers or Three Stooges i'd snap it up in an instant. I can't even imagine where i'd put 900 dvds I have four huge bookshelves stuffed with books and a fifth with the videotape collection that i'm slowly phasing out. By the way anyone seen Assault of Precinct 13, Complete Starvengers, complete Ronin Warriors, Young Ones or Blackadder on DVD? I picked up the Prisoner & Ab Fab collections from the UK, now I salivate in hopes of Red Dwarf and Blake's 7 collections. "Every legend, moreover, contains its residuum of truth, and the root function of language is to control the universe by describing it."

Xero, the Monty Python set is well worth the money. now I salivate in hopes of Red Dwarf I really really want that. Black Adder is next on my list of purchases We've also revolutionized the boob technology

I've happily bought a few times from Deep Discount DVD. No troubles so far for me. If nothing else, at least they actually put a phone number on the site to call them. Many seem to avoid that these days. |
|
Xero, I think I remember renting Assault on Precinct 13 from Netflix, but I've never seen it for sale. |

As with any BBC show shown in the US, you miss up-to 6 mins of footage because the BBC doesn't have any ads, and the US networks 'trim' each episode so it fits. Having seen some episodes of Bottom in both the UK and the US they cut out some really great material, it's almost as if it's gone slightly too far for the TV Network to handle. |
|
I particularly enjoyed "Blackadder's Christmas Carol" and "Blackadder Back and Forth", two things I had never had the opportunity to see before. Arizona Diamondbacks 2001 World Series Champions

Theres another blackadder, but it's actually owned by Fox/Sky TV which involves a time machine, absolutely hilarious, but they don't seem to be rushing to get it out to DVD. |

That's Blackadder Back and Forth. It's included in the box set. Or separately. Arizona Diamondbacks 2001 World Series Champions
