Microsoft Needs Emergency Dentist
April 2nd 2002, 07:40 CEST by Martin Davies John Riccitiello, president of Electronic Arts, told Bloomberg financial news service that "Microsoft has had its teeth kicked in, in both Europe and Japan." Ignoring the clumsy consecutive repetition of the word "in", firstly as a secondary particle of a phrasal verb and then as a preposition, he may just have a point. But what has caused Microsoft's mucky maw to be mucked up more? The Xbox, apparently. According to the ever reliable British press, the Xbox has bombed; though naturally no figures were provided to back this up. The proof is, according to daily British broadsheet The Independent, that "There have been no stock shortages - which would be expected if there were feverish buying of the consoles." Microsoft claim that this is due to uber-efficient factories in Poland, or something, and have played down the alleged problem, claiming that there is still a "strong demand" in Europe. But they would say that, wouldn't they? Meanwhile, back at the Deutsche Bank... "While Xbox had been projected to struggle because of inadequate software and poor brand recognition, the setback is worse than imagined," said Takashi Oya, who is apparently an analyst of somekind. What the fuck? Who is this guy talking about? What the hell kind of analyst is he anyway? 82% of the world's game developers have completely shafted the PC in favour of the Xbox, so precisely how can the software be inadequate? It's Microsoft for the sake of sweet baby Jesus - the world's most famous brand of anything anywhere. Exactly how could it have poor brand recognition? On second thoughts, don't answer that, especially if you've ever read any marketting books. So, is this just the usual MIRCO$OFT IS RUBISSH!!!!!!!11111 doomsaying, or is the Xbox failing? And why? What's the word on the inside, devs? What would be the repercussions on those currently developing for Xbox, were the console to flounder? For the purpose of this article all numbers were pulled from my anus. |

well Im utterly underwhelmed. edonkey/edonkeybot, dont seem to be able to connect to anything... oddly winmx, morpheus, direct connect and kazaa all work just fine *scratches head* Same here. I have no problem with limewire, kazaa everything. Decided to check out edonkey twice because of pimpage here and both times I have just watched it go through a huge list of servers. It tries to connect to all of them multiple times for about 45 minutes before I shut it off. Whats my problem? |

It tries to connect to all of them multiple times for about 45 minutes before I shut it off. Whats my problem? Sounds like your just using the server list that it includes, nearly every one of those servers no longer exist. The bot will replace the list when started (and at set times, tho that can't be annoying when playing a game since it'll force most of them to minimize), or just grab a new list here. |

Are we talking about the XBox market here? 1. Create the most powerful console on the market (albeit expensive). 2. Back it up with decent word of mouth and some really pretty graphics. 3. Start with a limited number of good games. 4. Stir with strong market competitors. What have you got? A 3DO console. Still, the XBox has done so many things right for development, such as being a wintel/nvidia platform (which has been very popular in the last 10(?) years), built in HD and networking for easier build iteration (no CDs=Good Thing), and feature implementations that err on the side of extra granularity (such as the face buttons with 256 degrees of sensitivity). I'm not surprised that the box is expensive but it is very easy to build for. If any console "deserves" to have a good market based on design alone, the XBox is it. I think we havent seen the end of the $500 million advertising budget MS speced for the console's release. -Demo_Boy |

And sweet jesus you people are anal about the Edonkey servers thing... just let it run, it won't stay connected to ANY server for very long, that's just the way it works. The only thing you need to be connected to a server for is to send out searches. Edonkey is NOT for small files like mp3's and stuff, its primarily a warez/movie/tv episodes place. The best way to use it is to set it to look for a few things and then just leave it running for as long as you can, you will never get a situation like Morpheus where you can download the latest J-Lo vid from 300 users at once, but you can at least know the file you are getting is not some renamed junk. Why is it so slow? Because people are getting around the upload/download limit through hacks, or just setting it to the bare minimum they have to. Then removing files after they finish, so noone can finish theirs. In a perfect world, we'd all use Direct Connect and maybe actually have to *shudder* speak to the people we're downloading from, but Direct Connect has its own set of flaws (For one I can't find a server in the US with near the content on the foreign ones, and I really don't care to download at 4k a second from Finland.) and the glory days of Napster are far behind us. --jmc

The X-box won't fail because Microsoft is taking the long view that you need to take with consoles, thinking two to three years ahead when they've finally built up a noteworthy library. Also Microsoft will pump as much money as they need to into the X-Box to keep it afloat, and the ease of porting, the possible hackability, the hard drive, dvd playback etc will keep it alive a lot longer than my much loved Dreamcast. Microsoft has money and time, what they don't accomplish with a carrot they will with the hammer of marketing. The ywill keep telling people that its the best console on the market nad due to the short collective attention span of the American public they will be. The only people railing against Microsoft and the X-Box are Linux fanatics and Anti-Monopoly faddists, kids who rant about monopolies and unfair business practice until they get old fat and comfortable within the system and eventually choose to buy in. #90 That's it, you've made my list. Stephen R. Donaldson is a incredible writer... the gap was pretty good, but nothing else matters... he wrote the unbeliever series. It doesn't get much better than that. My name comes up in conversation when you mention teh spelin.

Can someone tell me the magic required to get eDonkey to not use "c:\program files\edonkey\temp" as it's temp directory? I've tried to change it in the options dialog, but it gleefully ignores my requests. I searched for this value both in *.ini on my C drive as well as the registry ... nada. It's complaining that it's out of space on drive C ... umm, duh? I'd like to use -another drive- instead. Apparently, this is forbidden. I am a magnificent three toed sloth.
|
|
Are they trying to discourage people from using their product? I certainly hope so. I like the way the newer version of the Donkey is available on the network itself, but not on the WWW page... I couldn't figure it for awhile, but then I realized, d'oh, http bandwidth is somewhat expensive these days, right? Warren, change the temp path in the options dialog, restart the client. If you're doing that and it still doesn't work, then... I just don't know. Yikes, I had all but forgotten about that crap. *blinks slowly* The Gap series is only "crap" in the same sense that "PlanetCrap" is "crap." And you know; the first time I read the Second Chronicles, I thought it was stupid. Then I grew up, read it again, was nearly moved to tears. btw, welcome to this place, IWLB. Here's a tip: "The man who can't dance, thinks the band sucks." You must be ^this^ tall to ride the rollercoaster.

It won't change the temp directory if there is ANYTHING listed to download. You have to clear that out first Will warez for food.

funny, I was able to move the temp directory at will this morning. of course, you have to have edonkey turned off to move the temp files, then it was just a matter of going in and resetting the pathway in the system, resumed fine :} Brandon, your chair is much too big for you, it makes you look like Scott Evil.... Btw, Belkin Nostromo speedpad +10 mins configuring it + jedi knight 2 == much love and all kinds of carnage in multiplayer. `new` move, front flip over target, at apex of jump and just as you begin to flip, continue to hold down jump and press force pull. Voila force body slams, of the like that would make Blade proud. oh and wall running and dropping into a forward roll just as I throw my lightsaber into a crowd of would be flag stealers, dropping two of them and finishing the third with a nifty force pull + side flip out of the way so he goes screaming into the void, comedy gold. Ds Never argue with an idiot, theyll drag you down onto their level, then beat you with experience.

Any reason they would be including a default list of dead servers? Are they trying to discourage people from using their product? It'll add servers on it's own if it manages to connect to one first. There isn't a central server to grab a list from (at lest not an offical one ran by edonkey's creator) so that the network will allways work no matter what happens, but still be usable to find crap. Unfortunitly it also counts on people setting up the servers right/leaving them running/not setting them up on non-static ips/ect. The end result it a system that counts on at lest one included server working while the people running the servers are dead set on showing why it's a good policy to hate people. |

realizing that this thread has gone completely off-topic... I don't think it's realistic to predict that Microsoft (or anyone else for that matter) could come to dominate the console arena for any appreciable length of time. If this were possible, Sony and Sega would not have entered the market succesfully, and we'd all be playing Nintendo games (I discount Atari because they basically ran themselves into the ground with the videogame crash in the early 80's.) Why? Well, ironic as it seems, the lack of an open standard allows companys to come in with better technology at will and create a new market. See Sega with the Genesis in 1989. They saw the NES, came up with something better, put it on the marketplace, and developers were willing to risk developing for it despite the fact that it was unproven, simply because it had adequate marketing and installed base. There was little to no loss involved in testing the waters, while gains could be (and were) quite significant. The only reason a developer would not use a cross-platform developmental approach to design is that the console manufacturer has a high-royalty contract with developer. And no company, not even Microsoft, has the monetary resources to simply buy off every developer and publisher in the known universe. So, as long as there are sufficiently large companies around to risk the initial cash to develop and market a console, a monopoly in the realm seems unlikely at best. |

Funny, but wasn't the NES fighting against a dead market when it was released? All the consoles of the early 80s were dying, and Atari's 7800 flopped big time. It may have been tougher for Nintendo to get in peoples' houses in the mid 80s than for Sega to get in with the Genesis. At least Sega had a market to penetrate. Greg

Umm are you not aware of the Sega Master System, or did you simply use the Genesis because Sony wasn't a good enough example of what you were trying to prove? Although I don't exactly understand your objection to the example, Sony works about as as well as Sega, although Sony entered a market with two principle competitors instead of one, so no one was really dominant per se at the time. I didn't use the SMS simply because it was not as successful as the Genesis. My point is not to say that dominance will always be broken by a new competitor, simply that it can be, and that the likelihood is that eventually a competitor will come along and disrupt a dominant market force.
