Anarchy Online Best MMORPG of 2001?
February 12th 2002, 22:06 CET by Morn Believe it or not, but good old Anarchy Online has been awarded Best MMORPG of 2001 by PC Gamer. Hmm. Ignoring the crash problems the game had in the first months after its launch, I can honestly say that I've had more fun with AO than I've had with DAoC. Yes, DAoC has been very stable, but it lacks something AO has. Maybe allowing me to be silly? Who knows. Overall, I think MMORPGs aren't anywhere near where they could, or should be. Everquest, Asheron's Call, Dark Age of Camelot and Anarchy Online are all essentially the same game -- one of the reasons why I'm currently not subscribed to any of them. (The other is the little thing about having to play with other people. Oh, the horror.) Anyway -- should a game that was shipped in a horrible, horrible state be awarded like this, no matter if it's the most fun? Doesn't that send the wrong message to developers and publishers alike? Discuss, people! |

AO had a lot of nothing. I mean A LOT of nothing. DAOC has a little of nothing, but that gets better all the time. AO was a great concept, though it was poorly thought out. DAOC has a pretty standard concept, but they do it well. A game doesn't have to be original so much as it needs to work, and have something to actually do. |

#41 by Creole Ned So where exactly does PC Gamer sit on the credibility meter, anyway? I haven't read the magazine for quite some time. I'm not reading mags for credibility. They are all too eager to get that hot new preview or the latest in hot gamedevelopment (which is quite valid). You can tell by the way previews always get more pages then the reviews. However they never bother to do some fact checking for the popular phrases they toss up. Two examples I can recall at this time. Example 1: "Voyager Elite Force has the voices from the orignal cast including the all tight and lusious Seven of Nine!" Jeri Ryan was the only one of the original cast who DIDN'T lend her voice for the game. Check the credits. Example 2: "From the makers of Homeworld Cataclysm: Sigma!" (currently ICreatures) Relic Studios made the original Homeworld but had almost nothing to do with Cataclysm which was made by Barking Dog Studios. Minor annoyances indeed and most people wouldn't even notice. It's not that I'm saying they should stop doing this it just shows how credible and "in the scene" mags are. I'm just reading them to see if there is some new game announced I might like. Definitly not for their opinion on games cause that rarely is consistent with my own. |

PIGs'll come of age when you don't have this fucking d&dlite wank, clogging up the phone system and the player's arteries. Imagine Deus Ex, on-line, persistent. So much potential for different player factions, random day-to-day persistence - lots of upgrades, skills & devices potential, devloper-made major plot advances for overall story arc. Now that's what I'm talking about. |

Oh, and regarding the #planetcrap IRC situation: Desiato, I checked out EGN prior to NewNet, and I didn't like it much. Basically, the Ircop I had to talk to to get #planetcrap registered seemed to be some kind of 15 year old claiming to be some kind of "ISP", but displaying an unhealthy lack of Internet and spelling skills (those two rarely go together well, anyway). :b I'm kind of disappointed by the frequent net splits on NewNet. Are they hosting one of their hubs on some kind of 56k line?! That's why I'm going to put an IRC server on PlanetCrap's new server really soon, so everything will be back to normal. I believe Max aka Chromag has been setting something up, too; maybe we'll just use that, or even link the two servers. We'll see. - Morn |

Did this specific story make it here yet? This is the Microsoft XP licence. GO TO page 6. Find INTERNET-BASED SERVICE COMPONENTS headline. Read it. You: "...acknowledge and agree that Microsoft may automatically check the version of the Product and / or It's components that you are utilizing and may provide upgrades or fixes to the product that will be AUTOMATICALLY downloaded to your Workstation Computer". IBSC, isn't that a bit like, oh I don't know, MAIL, or EXPLORER? Doesn't this mean MS can thereafter scan your computer at-will and install any software they desire? And they're not required to inform you or anything? Just checking... |

Hello, I've been viiting this site for quite sometime, but never actually posted anything. Well, I guess its time to say something. I've played AO and DaOC extensively, and in my opinion, DaOC is considerably better than AO. Now, I am not going to talk about stability here, because thats what we all know, inspite of all the patches etc etc, DaOC is still far more stable than AO. Now, why is DAOC better than AO? Because, if you visit camelotherald.com often. you will see that Mythic is constantly adding new content in the form of new quests, new monster models, new spells, new sounds, new items and recently they even added a COMPLETE NEW EPIC ZONE. Moreover, according to what the Dev has said at camelotherald, they will continue to add new fresh content into the game at rgeular intervals. Shortly, they will also be adding a lowbie RvR zone and even a completely new PvP server. Improvements like these help keep a game rfresh and community alive. AO on the other hand, is STABLE, I mean.. things just happen.. things keep going on. I just find AO bland compared to DaOC. I mean, with DAOC , there is always something new to look forward to. |

JMC At this job, I'd go a little nutty without PC at my fingertips. But I was reading it at home, in any case. This shitty PC couldn't handle any page with sound or graphics anyway. Literally, it's an overclocked 486 dx or somesuch dinosaur. |

Considering there's little to no closure until half-way through the third book, there's not really much the director could do about that without rewriting the whole story. Sucks for the LCD as most didn't seem to understand there's going to be two more movies, but hey, whaddya do? |

I'm a bit worried that when the movie was called out at the Awards nominations, it was "Lord of the Rings", when the actual name of the film (and the first book) is The Fellowship of the Ring. Will The Two Towers be known as Lord of the Rings II? /me shudders... |

I thought the movie ended as well as a the first chapter of a 3 volume set can, they have a major battle, Frodo sets on his journey, blah blah... works out good to me. Reminded me of Empire Strikes Back. --jmc |

My sister went to it with her boyfriend last weekend and they were both bemused by the ending. She was like 'it was great until the end - when the film finished and they hadn't even destroyed the ring, it was just fucking pointless'. When I pointed out that it was the first part of a trilogy and there was probably five more hours of film to go before we see the ring actually destroyed, it dawned on her that there was a reson that it's called 'Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring'. deadlock |

Just to get a little something off my chest here: Fucking techs. Nothing personal against any of those of you here who fall under the terminology, but the jackasses I bought my PC off of in July have forgotten all the assurances and promises they gave me at the time regarding upgrade-friendliness... i.e. discounting ram or processors if I brought the system back to them and ordered the parts through them. Now they tell me I "should be able to sell the old parts secondhand without much trouble". I should've gotten it in writing, in retrospect, but the situation regarding the forming of their business (splitting off from an older company and leaving all the sleazy business types behind, in order to form a purely geek-run operation) I took them at their word as it all seemed so very earnest. Sigh. I can't believe in anything anymore. Don't even get me started on the Santa Claus fiasco from last week. |
