Anarchy Online Best MMORPG of 2001?
February 12th 2002, 22:06 CET by Morn

Believe it or not, but good old Anarchy Online has been awarded Best MMORPG of 2001 by PC Gamer.

Hmm.

Ignoring the crash problems the game had in the first months after its launch, I can honestly say that I've had more fun with AO than I've had with DAoC. Yes, DAoC has been very stable, but it lacks something AO has. Maybe allowing me to be silly? Who knows.

Overall, I think MMORPGs aren't anywhere near where they could, or should be. Everquest, Asheron's Call, Dark Age of Camelot and Anarchy Online are all essentially the same game -- one of the reasons why I'm currently not subscribed to any of them. (The other is the little thing about having to play with other people. Oh, the horror.)

Anyway -- should a game that was shipped in a horrible, horrible state be awarded like this, no matter if it's the most fun? Doesn't that send the wrong message to developers and publishers alike? Discuss, people!

Who better to put a romantic 'get them bastard Brits' spin on it ?

As for the rest... could it be that the IRA, an organisation that is (perhaps ostensibly, perhaps not) dedicated to overthrowing British rule in Northern Ireland is more likely to kill members of institutions that are regarded as British (ie the RUC) than members of one that could not, by any stretch of the imagination, be regarded as British (ie the Gardai), even one that they don't officially recognise ? Honestly flamethrower, sometimes it really is as simple as that and besides, everyone knows that conspiracy theories are the new religion of the stupid.

Senor con el Fuego,
Your view: the IRA have not been told to lay-off the Gardai and they're as-likely to kill Gardai as RUC. Riiiiiiight. This would make the massive difference in G/RUC deaths co-incidental.
OR, they have been told to lay-off the Gardai and they're NOT as-likely to kill them as RUC.

I think the discrepancy might come down to the IRA specifically targetting members of the RUC for murders of opportunity.  In the 70's, they also decided that Catholic members of the RUC would make even better targets because then they could spend 30 years talking about how it was a biased service working only for the Protestant community.

They haven't been told specifically to lay off the Gardai, rather they have no reason to kill them, unless they're trying to arrest them or stop them robbing post offices.

I myself agree that McCabe's killers shouldn't be released.  I wonder who actually said the small-minded quote at the end of the article, seems a bit odd to have a single anonymous quote put against 81% of a newspaper poll.  Not exactly, ahem, balanced reporting but why couldn't you find a newspaper article and not this fluff opinion piece?

I'll see what I can find, but there's hardly anything to argue about here is there?  You've your opinions and I've mine.  No-one else on the board cares or bothers to read these.  I don't understand why you get so worked up about Irish politics really, unless it's to get a reaction from myself and deadlock.  Irish politics are, like, complicated, you know?  :)

You accusing me of finding a P-IRA activist "romantic"?  (-:

I have no reason to have Thur Lurve for this man, but I don't doubt he is entirely correct in stating the P-IRA members on the PO raid did not follow procedure, or that he would know what that procedure was, or that there is any indication it is any different from the British - his enemy - view of what are standing P-IRA Gardai procedure - simply put, don't butcher the Gardai.

You make the spin (again that) the P-IRA are more likely to be killing Brit/RUC forces as they are the enemy. Partly true. What puts the P-IRA into contact with the Gardai - and ultimately led to the need to debate response tactics which from the lack of dead Gardai cannot be said to "shoot your way out" like it is with Brit/RUC forces - is they use the ROI for staging attacks, weapons dumps, training grounds, recruitment, funding, and lots and lots of other things I assume I have to be grateful for. The P-IRA are a highly disciplined, neo-military, organisation - for many detailed situations there are rules and procedures.

It is inconceivable in this tightly regulated army the Co7 would not lay down guidelines for active P-IRA volunteers when faced with Gardai. The leadership could not fail to realise lots of dead Gardai means lots of bad publicity in Ireland and with Catholic Irish. This one case of yours alone proves that.

If ONLY for selfish reasons it is not unreasonable the C07 would put a "don't slaughter Gardai" decree down, is it?

The IRA do exist. They do kill. They are highly trained and organised. They are secret. They do conspire. They haven't butchered that many Gardai but have been in ROI a lot. Historian of IRA says when they did butcher they were out of normal procedure doing so. But no, I'm putting one and one together and coming up with nine hundred and ninety eight trillion.

and by the way my brother your fellow cuntry men pay for them

acrotards out there: p-ira (provisional ira, romantic people who kill), r-ira (real ira, ex pira people who kill but are not romantic), roi (republic of ireland, a semi-independent wales), ni (northern ireland, wales without the prospects), ruc (royal uslter constabulary, more like the keystone cops), co7 (cunts of seven, the head dickheads of the pira).

Correct... they have no reason to kill them... unless they are trying to arrest them. The P-IRA are a terrorist organisation, so come on, what are the chances of that possiblity coming up?

That's right ... there will have been very many situations where the P-IRA and Gardai have faced off. So.... read through the Gardai arrests of P-IRA members over the years.

These are trained killers my man, hell - EVEN A NUMBER OF SAS SOLDIERS GOT KILLED TO DEATH FROM THE IRA IN ACTUAL FACE TO FACE FIGHTS. If nothing else, the P-IRA has some really hard men. If those fuckers had have gone "pop" as Cribdick O' Phlemus came round to slap the restraints on you'd have had a couple of hundred dead Gardai, not a couple.

Yet many of the arrests go ... smoothly. Which is even more remarkable for an institutionally corrupt force.

At this point, I'm almost tempted to email that historian bloke. From a anon email account from a Republican site I get to from ananamizer, mind.   ;-)

No, you fool :P What I said was that Tim Pat Coogan, being a member of the IRA, is inevitably going to romanticise that organisation's history into one where the brave men of the IRA valiantly take on the oppressive might of the British empire in an attempt to deliver the huddled Nationalist masses. You may very well fancy him as well, but that's beside the point.

hehe, killed to death.  I liked The Border Fox, Dessie O'Hare.  He had two memorable quotes a few years back.  His first was basically, "you'll never take me alive coppers, I'll fight to the death."  His second quote was, "gently lads, gently" as he was carried to an ambulance on a stretcher after a shootout with our 'institutionally corrupt' police of this 'semi-independent' country.

Your harsh evidence is nothing in the light of his fond admonishments! Try again! And again! The only way the game will ever become better is if we keep sending them money, so if it fails, it's your fault for not giving them a chance! Or 200 chances, as the case may be...

DS, you should be happy the P-IRA had standing order not to murder your cops.

Uh, you fucked up who you were talking to, various arms of the Republican movement have been executing Cops n Soldiers for years.

Ya know what Flamey, for the most part the `Loyalist` paramilitaries werent going around shooting the Police and army up here either, and there are lots of allegations of collusions and information sharing. So its pretty much a mirror image of the IRA/eire, with the exception that the Loyalists never really bothered mounting operations across the border. Why? lots of reasons, probably because it costs so much more for petrol up here compared to the scams on the border/just across it so they couldnt afford to run back n forth (fallacious argument, its made just to be flippant).

Btw, I wouldnt be so proud of the `english` thanks to the romans, after all they were completely crushed by the french a few hundred years later, King Aelthred the unready and the battle of hastings etc etc. Ya know the Normans etc etc, ooops that was after the vikings beat the shit out of them. Oh and lets not go anywhere near the entire `royal` family being of Prussian descent, gawd love the queen mum `pulls cap gesture`.

Of course there wouldn't be a fight. Since we'd all be pissed, flamethrower would be leading the bar  in a rousing rendition of 'Billy in the Bowl', but not before the following scene took place:
_____

(Interior: smoky 'traditional' bar in Dublin's St. Stephen's Green area; pictures of famous Irish literary types, artists, patriots and Ronan Keating adorn the walls, which are otherwise covered in wallpaper that was once ivory coloured, but has since turned a musty brown colour. Two men - one a fine of roguish Irish charm and the other an affable English Gent - recline on a long, beer-stained, but generally red sofa set against one of the walls. From their manner, they are obviously quite drunk; Flamethrower, the English chap, who has spent the evening working his way through every tap on the bar, is determined to maintain his stiff upper lip, but is oblivious to the fact that he is dribbling. The Irishman, deadlock, has his one of his arms draped around his English associate's shoulders and has been talking - largely incoherently and verrrry meanderingly - for the last three hours about how 'us Anglo-Saxon Norman Celts have to fucking stick together, man, it's us or them, ya know like'...)

deadlock: And sure, yer only an oul' English bollocks, but still 'n' all like, I love ya man, d'ye know wha' I mean like ? (Adjusts his Aran jumper and tightens the length of kettle flex that's holding his pants up)

flamethrower: To tell you the truth, old boy, one had one pegged as nothing but a dirty, lying fenian cunt, but one can jump to conclusions, when one hasn't taken the time to brief oneself on the facts of the matter and adjust one's outlook accordingly, what what ?

(Shortly after their impromptu singing session, both pass out and are robbed by the bloke who comes in to sell An Phoblacht, before being dumped in the Phoenix Park, where they live out their days selling their arses for (and, indeed, to) fags and booze.)

.....
