More Norwegian MMOG Goodness!
August 2nd 2001, 21:51 MSD by Morn

<a href="http://www.darkfallonline.com">Darkfall Online</a> is a new massively multiplayer online roleplaying game being developed by Norwegian developer <a href="http://www.razorwax.com">Razorwax</a>. With new MMOG titles being announced every other day, what's special about this one?

Rather than lock ourselves up in our office for 3 years, cross our fingers, hope you like our game, and then release it, we are going to be doing an open development of Darkfall.

More details can be found in this <a href="http://www.darkfallonline.com/features/letter/index.shtml">"Open Letter"</a> by the developers.

Certainly sounds interesting, as this is something a lot of people unhappy with the traditional development cycles of large games have been suggesting for a while now. The future of game development, or a strong contender for "MMOG death of the month"?

Fuzzie mentioned that it took us 12 months to get here - please note that we made it all from scratch: 3D Engine, tools/worldbuilder, art, design and server. We are 4 people fulltime man, give us some credit here :)

I can't really tell how much technology you've developed from what I've seen :) If you've got a really good engine and toolset and you've been concentrating on developing them rather than starting work on gameplay, then thats cool... I've seen a lot of vapourware projects, and at first glance this looks like one of them :)

But, like I said, I look forward to seeing it :P And you'll probably be able to laugh at me and say "what did you say about taking 12 months?" :) I hope you can :)

Anyway :P Why the hell am I trying to post on-topic here? I must be insane :)

That Brasseye was funny :) People just missed the point totally...

Totally off-topic, flamethrower baiting and more annoying than morn's fixation with AO :P but it seems to me that bombing an area of London (Ealing) with a large Irish population is a really fucking stupid idea. That's not to say that bombing any part of London is a good idea, but come on ? Bombing your own ex-pats ?? The Real IRA - the intelligent face of Irish Republicanism.

Thank you and goodnight

Hmmm... to be honest... I'm getting fed up with all these MMORPG's.
isn't there anything else we can nag about ? Is everything that's going wrong in gaming land due to stupid massive multiplayer online games with shitty graphics and boring gameplay which only appeals to contact-disturbed people ?

I really used to love the threads on Planetcrap but lately I'm getting really bored... (also the reason I'm not posting as much anymore - not that I've posted as much as others here in the past)

I'm almost wishing Andy would come back (hmm... I'm not the first to say this, I've seen a comment from someone else stating exactly the same). At least we could laugh with some of the extremely stupid rumors he was posting...

For all I care, all MMORPG's can just get blown to hell and never come back. There's not one that could capture my attention (and I find it extremely funny that games like AO and Tribes2 need to get more patches than 10 single player games all combined)

Fair, fair.

I may be too bitter to be able to suspend my belief, but I can at least wear heavier boots to reduce the possibility of either knee jerking.

I tend to prefer my NEW GAMING HORIZONS type announcements with a main dish of playable demo and a tangible and realistic set of goals on the side.  I haven't seen anything like that since Serious Sam appeared.  (That game helped remind me that on occasion the industry does manage to surprise me in a good way.)

Every time I see someone has shown up at a conference or convention with nothing but a looping demofilm, all I can do is throw up my hands and say "Why did you bother showing up?"

Then I remember the free booze.

Its because multiplayer code is so damned hard to test properly ... the *number* of patches is probably due to the fact that game developers are rushing out patches to fix multiplayer issues fast ... they can afford to be more relaxed in purely single-player games...

I liked Andy, he was an utter ass, oftentimes a liar, and usually a poor researcher of facts, but he could stir people up. He didn't like me, but I have to appreciate such a professional troll.

Sometimes before I post a statement of outright lies mixed with tiny bits of truth disguised as real journalism I take a minute and think to myself, "What Would Andy Do?"

You all must be kidding.

Andy....back here?

Are you so starved for controversy that you must invite the devil himself?

It makes no sense...even "The Register" had the sense to get rid of his influence, and they are the most inflammatory site (for Info Tech) that I've seen...and they still booted him.

How about a random troll?

Add my name to the "does not want Andy back" list.

I must admit that I have found the topics to be a wee bit lacking the last month or two. Now, I know -- because it is repeated ad nauseum by the regulars who post -- that topics are merely a "launching point" for whatever tickles everyone's fancy, but then, why bother with topics at all? Why not just have an open topic, let it fill to 500 posts, then automatically pop open a new blank topic to post to after that?

Well, of course, that would be silly. *Some* sort of structure is needed. Staying on-topic is not a bad thing -- if the topic is interesting. But you can only cover Anarchy Online from so many angles. :) Is anyone submitting stories to Morn these days? I'm assuming either no one is or he doesn't feel they're up to snuff. Or that this is his site and if every topic is going to be about some MMORPG, then, dammit, that's the way it's going to be! :)

Is PC a discussion site or a blood sport?   It's pretty pathetic for someone to want leave the shit stirring to another person if that's really what they want to see.  Afraid we won't like you anymore?  We don't even know you.  Just pick a different target than 3D Realms, Monolith or Gamespy.  Please.

Mine is...now.

The one redeeming thing about AOL.  Used to be, as long as they had me on their junk mail list, I never had to buy floppies.  Now as long as they have me on their junk mail list, I don't have to buy empty DVD cases to stuff my games into.

Beats the heck out of their old shipping method.  Those cardboard and shrinkwrapped squares with the CD inside didn't even make decent coasters.

Max Payne comes with a mousepad (one of the few things I like about 3d Realms, they actually put decent misc shit in their boxes, i still have my Duke3d mousepad), which would be hard to fit in a case.

Of course the game is 49.99 here at Big K, so I think I'll wait a bit before buying it.

Morn : guess you misunderstood me. It's not that I want Andy himself back but rather the controversiality that used to be in the topics. Lately it's all been about MMORPG's it seems and it's getting extremely dull to be honest.
Everyone keeps saying the same shit. Nothing new there.
If you like to keep rambling about MMORPG's, then that's your right, it's your site. I'll just have to pay less attention to it then (like I've been doing the last couple of weeks, only once and a while popping in to see wether something interesting had come up)

Analfissure : Max Payne is packaged in DVD case in Benelux aswell. No mousepad though (or the distributor stole it from my reviewcopy)

;)

I understand. However, there are two reasons why there have been so many MMOG related topics recently:

a) they're the stuff I've been focusing on myself for a while now, so I'm rather prone to see (and post about) MMOG crap and not hypocritical nude model crap;

b) a lot of crap has been happening in the MMOG sector in the last couple of months.

And yes, people have been submitting topics, but almost all of the good ones are general discussion topics (not current event related), so I've been saving them for times where I am too lazy to post my own. Or dead. Oh screw it, I'm just a slacker. :)

Maybe from your perspective.  Fromt what I can tell MMOG has been following this model.

"Game A is going to rock when it's released!"
Game A is released
"Game A is buggy and fucking sucks! Game B will save your soul from eternal damnation when it gets released though"
Game B is released
"Game B is buggy and fucking sucks!"

Perhaps we should have another MMOG topic when one is released that isn't buggy and doesn't suck?

Speed, I agree - mmorpgs don't appeal to me at all (yet, and they won't until they get good), and because this site seems to focus on them and only them these days, I visit PC much less often. The commentry here is getting boring and linear as a result. Its obvious most mmorpgs suck ass, which is why there's so much bitching about them. I feel sorry for you guys who are spending so much time attempting to play them, and then bitching about them. If it sucks ass, don't freaken play it. And why spend so much energy and thought on something that blows goats? Any publicity is good publicity in some respects, and even by bitching about them, you're giving them credit. A conversation on the merits of Max Payne would be much more interesting (and timely) to read than quibbles about mmorpgs that will always suck.

I think they all suck.  I'm not a fan of RPG at all.

Typical RPG game.

player receives bag of gold
player buys  12 Shield of Olsen
player walks around
player finds another player who's a midget
players fight, one dies (usually the midget)
player picks up  7 sword of Ashley

talking trees taunt player
player runs from talking trees through the river of despair
player walks into town
player finds a siren named Mary-Kate
player drops pants

they're all the same.

Not all MMOG are rpgs.

I won't bother refuting your argument, since to me most every game is the same. :)

And before anyone starts, yes I am an idiot, no I can't back that up, and I eat babies.

Oh, and would any 3d Realms marketing gurus care to contribute as to why they felt the need to put outright lies such as "Finally, Max Payne is the first action game that actually monitors your ability to play, and auto-adjusts the difficulty level to match your playing ability." ? Tons of games have done that, for the last decade or so.
