Id Software bans Q3A mapping
May 14th 2000, 23:44 CEST by andy Have you made any levels for Q3A recently? If so, you're in violation of the license agreement. When you installed the latest version of the game, you probably didn't bother reading the EULA. Who does? But if you had, you'd have seen this:
So even though Id Software supplies the Q3Radiant level editor specifically for creating Q3A levels, actually using it is not allowed. Weird, huh? Don't worry, though, this isn't as stupid as it sounds. By the looks of things, what happened is that the EULA for Q3Test was mistakenly included with the latest patch. For a start, it's dated 23 April 1999, and there are several references to the software being a compatibility test version. That said, you are still bound by the terms of the agreement, even if it is the wrong one. And that also means, bizarrely, that you're no longer allowed to use Q3A for "recreational purposes". So quit playing it! It only goes to show - people in general do NOT read licenses before they agree to them, otherwise we'd have heard about this before, wouldn't we? |

I'm with Tom in how I interpreted it. still seems like an odd usage though. ________________________________ dumb·ass (Düm-èSS) n. - Anyone who doesn't agree with me. |

What dee fuck? does everyone hate id or something? anyway, on that guy who keeps pimping the hell out of WFA, i wouldn't be suprised if he was working on the mod himself. and for all that pimping i must say it doesn't look as appealing as he claims it is. I dont much care for any style of team fortress anymore but q3f was a pretty decent representation of one. IMO, quake 3 tourney is by far more challenging and more fun than any team play, camp-with-the-pipebombs-or-sentry mod. |

Nope not working on it .. just testing it and enjoying it Checking on *nix compatibility now, shouldnt be an issue (game engine does all the interpreting or have I screwed up my thinking someplace) Ill get back to you on that. I dont hate Q3f, I just dont enjoy playing it. The maps are overly cluttered (ooh shaders how can we use this shiny texture), and curiously proportioned. Guess Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I have a real problem seeing people across the bridge on 2forts (Ninja rig clocking well over 55fps), which isnt a problem in TF or TFC. Class Balance is a bit iffy with speeds being the biggest bugbear. Grenade spam is also a bitch, the soldiers nailbomb lagging the server, the pyros napalm grenade is over powered and spammy, scouts move just a hair too quick, the special button doesnt work for the sniper forcing you to bind another key to zoom. The mod seems unable to retain custom keybinds and resets itself when it feels like it. One plus side is being unable to hold the concs to concjump. That particular 'glitch/bug/feature' ruined TFC for me when every dickhead out there was exploiting engine design and defying gravity. 'But have a better defence', yeah thats easier to say when you cant defend against someone whos barely into a room then out of it again with the flag before your cpu control sg can open up or your hpbs can move. Q3f and WFA dont fall into that particular trap for which Im profoundly thankful. As *gasp* you have to fight your way in as a _Team_ .. will wonders never cease. I used to review maps on variou sites, Ive seen an awful lot of good, bad and indifferent maps in several engines. Ive a _feel_ for what makes a map fun. Its often hard to explain what makes a map good, why say Squackys Pimpslap is more fun to play than Myscha's Tundra, or why WhiteMeat is such an excellent DM map for Q3. Q3f is essentially more of the same with balance issues and design issues. We've seen it in TF, MegaTf, Wf and TFC, theres nothing there that makes it stand out.... EXCEPT its got all the eye candy that the q3 engine can provide. Wfa is guilty on the eye candy front and the mappers are still finding their feet. BUT in my opinion (note opinion) the gameplay variations and tweaks make for a more _fun_ game. I didnt like WF for Qs, didnt enjoy it at all, that could also be down to the community which sent me death threats for giving one of Greg 'Tumourhead' Reno's maps a bad review on MPQ. I preferred playing LMCTF, usually on the newbies / raganarok servers. As for the ostrich comment, it was meant to mean 'dont ignore it because this stupid asshole says its good'. Mind you I have a laugh playing Infiltration and UT4e against inhuman bots and having my ass kicked. Always found it kind of curious that with all the umod flexibility no one had managed to do a decent TF mod for Unreal or UT. Hopefully the upcoming ones will be good :) Ds |

Yes, the AirFist will be in PainKeep Arena. Ghost, you really going to jail? I can hear him now, "Well, your honor, she looked eighteen!" More screenies of PainKeep Arena will be released once we get more PK items in the maps, we've got the Gravity Well, harpoon gun and Airfist in so far. Working up some shiny new skins for 'em. I guess we're going to continue working on it. From what Todd said yesterday on Blues, we have nothing to worry about, and we're not putting anything from Q1 that belongs to id. I think that's why Generations got Foxed. ============================================= BEER: It's not just for breakfast anymore. |
