Flame off, baby
October 8th 2000, 16:13 CEST by andy

Good news for unpopular web hacks everywhere! Those lovely people at 3DR and OMM can now sanitize their e-mails with a new feature in the popular Eudora mail client. The "emotion monitor" tool, Moodwatch, scans your incoming and outgoing e-mails and rates them according to flame intensity. For outgoing mail, it warns you of any possible offense you might cause. For incoming mail, it lets you know how severe a roasting you're about to get.

If this was a government/Microsoft (is there any difference?) tool it would be the sort of thing that had free speech nuts reaching for their copies of 1984 and ranting about how we're all living in a police state, but don't worry: Moodwatch doesn't censor you or 'protect' you from anything. It just gives you advice. You're free to ignore it, and if you don't find it useful, you can just turn it off.

Judging by the Moodwatch web site, it does seem a little over-sensitive. The question "Are you nuts!?" in an outgoing mail gets the maximum rating of three hot chillies, along with a warning that it's "the sort of thing that might get your keyboard washed out with soap". If that's what it considers offensive then some of the mail I get should make it shut the whole program down and turn the computer off.

Eudora is available in three flavours: free, not-so-free, and not free at all. Grab it from here. This is not an advert.

It's not even a filter because it doesn't filter anything, it just says, "this message has a bad word or 2 in it."

phallen, you're such a clever guy. I admire your great intelligence, my idol.

If you could read, you might have noticed that Apache said VE "will be up and running in two or three days" more than one week ago. That's why I'm asking.

Oh, you work for Gamespy...why did I bother writing this at all...

This is why I still use Eudora 4.  I can send/sort/receive e-mail from multiple addresses, and it's obscure enough that I don't really have to worry about some putz porting Melissa to it.
I don't need a bad word filter-- well, perhaps I do, but I don't want one.  Likewise, I'm not about to "upgrade" to a piece of software that may or may not have active spyware included.  The whole free/not-so-free/not-free thing disturbs me, for some reason.

I was just trying not to insult you too hard. My choice of words is different than yours (a bit more civilized). If I said: "You're an imbecile and I'm gonna kick your stupid ass, blah, blah...", would that be better? If yes, I'll do it that way next time. But than I wouldn't be any better than you.

Not men - boys. People are generally cowards and feel threatened when someone who traditionally hasn't knows starts knowing. This is especially prevelent at schools. Best way to improve a males grades is to place them in company of females because they start to feel threatedned ;)

lol, I wish more women were competent with computers, or even better, knew how to strip the things down, troubleshoot, and fix them. I've known plenty of people, both women and men, that have spent as much time with computers as I have, but don't know anything about the insides of their computer or the software that's installed on it. I guess the only reason I learned a lot of what I did was because I got sick of waiting for someone else to fix the things when I broke them ;)

btw .. i am middling...i know some software..[and the software guy in the house keeps bitchin that i need to learn this..or i should learn that and makes obscure references in c then switches to bitching about the superiority of linux as i get a tad confuseld and go beat my windows around some more]
and some hardware..[got lucky about the hardware..i accually am a building maintence degreed individual and i have a hankering to tear things apart..seems to be genetic..ya ought to see the son of me and my hardware guy..but my hardware love has been ripping things apart since he was born[there is a tale of a screwdriver and outlet covers at the tender age of 11mths]and has been working in computers since modems could fit INSIDE]

thus i am in the middle and learning more each day...
