Those Heartless Epic Bastards
August 26th 2000, 04:06 CEST by andy We've had the monthly 3DR-bashing topic so that can only mean one thing... It's time to give the Epic boys another swift kick in their collective gut! The team behind RealCTF, a popular Unreal mod, recently released their follow-up project, Real Tournament for UT. But alas, there are problems in the land of mod, and at the same time as releasing Real Tournament, the team's programmer Brett "mouse" Foster went public with what he describes as the "sad story" of why the add-on wasn't released commercially. Oh, btw -- that thing about giving Epic a kick in the gut? Only joking. Epic is actually the victim here... The upshot of the "sad story" is that Epic somehow misled the Real Tournament team, giving them the impression that the add-on would be released commercially and with Epic's endorsement. What's worrying is that in the hands of someone whose brain isn't firing on all cylinders -- which, let's face it, is true of a lot of the 'younger' gamers -- this story could unfairly make Epic look bad. "Those heartless Epic bastards are screwing the mod community!" You can imagine the trollish rantings on message boards everywhere... But the e-mails from Epic, also posted by Brett Foster, actually show that this wasn't the case at all. For instance, back in June 1999 when the Real Tournament team first pitched their new idea, Epic's Cliff Bleszinski replied:
It's hardly a promise, is it? Truth be told, it's more like a diplomatic brush-off. The very worst criticism that could be made of Epic is that in the later stages of the project, they did give the impression that there was a chance of it being released commercially, and then went very quiet when it became clear that it wasn't going to happen. At that point, a blunt "no" would have been a good idea, instead of leaving e-mails from the Real Tournament team unanswered. So, slapped wrists all round, I think. But Epic certainly haven't behaved as badly as Brett Foster's story may be seen to suggest. And finally: When you've finished reading through the "sad story", decide for yourself if you think the Real Tournament team were more concerned with making a great product, or most interested in getting a commercial release... |

Same with screenshots and interviews (unless there's something actually interesting in there - as I said before - but 90% of all interviews have the same questions so that's why we put them in an overview) Questioning is indeed something a journalist does, and I do that if there's some interesting newsbit (I post them in seperate posts btw). Unfortunately most stuff that gets in the news is not interesting enough to put a seperate piece on. We at fragland are busy at the moment to re-vamp our site so that we can put more comments on newsposts ourselves, without making the headlines harder to read/find (you'll be able to see the result in a few months). It's not because we don't have seperate articles about stuff that we don't question the news. You can't see that if you're not a regular visitor (or you would have to stumble on an interesting news bit, which we haven't seen in a while). As an example of this, I can tell you that when we heard that the European Community was going to donate several millions to 4 unknown developers to create some "incredible" new game, that got a major post in our news, accompanied with severe criticism from me. However, I didn't make a seperate "article" about it. Currently our "articles"-section is more a column/story-section, that could indeed have a better name :p (btw : most articles aren't mine. You're completely correct about the fact that there are 1000 stories out there (especially with the "exclusive deals"-thingie :p) but the problem is that most of the time, the people that want to write an article about that, don't have all the info or time to do so, and those that have, don't WANT to write about it (which is a pitty) <QUOTE>You're a product site. We don't write reviews that are pages long (most sites/magazines do it to get more bannerviews I guess) just because people get bored. We get right to the basis and let people know wether we liked it or not. I think that except for Oldmanmurray (Hi Chet !) not too many sites do the same like us. One last thing : Fragland has never been and never will be bound to someone saying what we can and cannot write. Everything we have comes from ourselves or people that love us (including our own servers) and we don't earn 1 dime on it (everything we might earn from bannerviews goes right back into fragland) so I hope no-one will ever assume that our work is being censored by anyone. Do I have it wrong, or is it not true that when one plans to create a comercial product using someone else's engine, that they are generally expected to pay a heafty ransom to license the engine before hand? I always thought that was the difference between a mod, and a comercial product. Doing so in this case, would probably have saved a number of people a pile of heartache, and late night sessions spent creating an unauthorized and unsellable game. Incidents like this are probably what causes the fine print to take up so much paper. <I><B></B></I><I></I><I></I> |

FUCK I'm PISSED! I've spent the last three god damn hours trying to get Unreal Tournament running on my system. I used to have it installed, but uninstalled it in order to put Heavy Metal: FAKK 2 on my system. Well, I played through FAKK, and was in the mood for some UT CTF. Little did I know that I'd FUCK OFF FOR THREE fucking hours trying to get the little motherfucker to work! I installed, from scratch, then downloaded the 6 428 meg patch. I have a TNT2 Ultra, with the lastest NVidea Windows 98 drivers, I'm running directx 7a, yet if I try it in Direct3D mode, the screen goes black and LOCKS UP, making me reboot the whole fucking machine. I can't run it in safe move, even if I uncheck all the options, and software mode doesn't even run. WTF??? I've uinstalled it, and tried it on another drive, thinking I may need some room on the drive for it to cache or some such silly shit, but no! GOT DMAN"SA:LKDFSj;lf;jlkafd;ljkfd;ljkf FUC I'm deleting the little bastard... Fuck this.. Where's my Dreamcast!<I><B></B></I><I></I><I></I> |

So, yes, while you have to hump through extra hurdles when creating an add-on as opposed to creating new game from scratch, the process for hammering out these details is a similar one, which at some point results in cash changing hands, and a general project 'go ahead' signal with all the parameters laid out beforehand. I'm not ragging on you guys or anything, it just seems that you set out to do something that is generally not allowed, and in doing so, acted out some of the steps in the wrong order which not surprisingly did not work out as hoped. If you guys are capable of doing something of comercial quality, then I by all means wish you the best of luck in the future. Since I'm bored, and I find CrapSpy's voyeuristic appeal faltering as the night goes on here, I'll contribute my two cents. It's a shame RealTournament isn't going to be, in all likelihood, an official, money-generating UT addon. Mouse, Swartz and the gang are all very talented, and I'm sure the finished product you'll get off PlanetUnreal will be terrific fun. However, it's not the only work that's run into this situation. <a href="http://www.planetunreal.com/excessive">Excessive Overkill</a> for UT is freaking insane, but requires a whole lotta computer to run locally, and about 1.5 times the bandwidth of regular UT to function well, so it misses the GotY (Game of the Year) boat. <a href="http://www.planetunreal.com/u4e">Unreal4Ever</a> is another mod that is, perhaps, too wacky to include on a UT CD. Fun? Yes, loads, but perhaps there's just too much going on there. <a href="http://www.planetunreal.com/agentx">AgentX</a> is another one, high-quality, but perhaps not up to Epic's standards, or simply a 'victim' of too much going on at a small software developer at one time. Bottom line, though, and I believe that George Broussard mentioned it, is that each of these teams (and some others I haven't mentioned) are ahead of 99% of the people out there that have the 'next Counter-Strike', but somehow never get to producing anything. These teams should be proud of their efforts and, publically posting private emails not withstanding, should be encouraged to continue their work, improving with each release. Sorry for my little temper tantrum. I'm all better now. I reinstalled the drivers that came with my card and could at least run UT in software mode. I'm installing the 428 patch now and will make an attempt to run it in Direct3D mode. Wish me luck... 4 hrs later and I can finally get my fix, good thing I'm not a junkie eh? I think the problem was those Detonater 3 drivers from Nvidia *(or however you spell their name).... <I><B></B></I><I></I><I></I> |

sgt. hulka: "ROLLER COASTER TYCOON" do you enjoy that game? i tried it for about 3 hours and in my opinion it just wasn't up to par with the sim city games. plus, building the coasters was a major pain. I spent a lot of time adjusting the coasters so i could connect walkways.. i don't like busywork. as far as UT is concerned, I have no idea;-) One thing that hasn't been pointed out about this new gamecube is that it's so small you can use it as a softball if you get frustrated. - Paul |

Posting on the topic when you're at #185. Is it allowed? I read the RealTournament web page long before this place. I never got the impression that they were bagging epic. It was suprisingly polite considering their hopes and dreams had just been dashed. Cliffy, I hope you don't aske fro the emails to be removed. There's nothing in them that refects badly on you or Epic, and it's an interesting insight into how to (and not to) go about getting support for a project. Andy vs Brousard and Silly Inflamatory Topics. If Andy was a totally reasonable guy, and posted sensible, balanced, topics, then this place would be dead boring. If ya gonna have an arguement, someone has to say something worth arguing about. Andy does this very well. |

Jeremy I disagree. They could post on the same topics and gather the same strong emotion - without the laziness and stupidity. Don't mistake being lazy and having an audience with brillance. Arguing with Andy is worse than with an 8 year old. Logic and reason is replaced by what goes as wit for an 8 year old. I think the only thing worthwhile is when the topics leave Andy's original thread. An 8 year old can always start an argument by calling you "poopy" (watch though - don't call Seth Poopy - he will recount the day he was covered in poop by classmates and then he will threaten to sue you). I only stick around now that Flamethrower has let me in on the secret. I hope to never contribute anything worthwhile again. |

A container for copywritten material that allows you to install once and forget and then share at any time with a friend - but the friend has to pay the copyright holder. Of course it's even worse then a CD cheack (forfiting a CD cheack screen for a nagscreen even after paying, forcing you to be connected to the internet no matter what, installing non-removing dll's, etc..) I don't see this type of thing taking off for a while. In the mean time could developers/publishers please have a little talk with the art deparment on the topic of CD cases and the CD keys. I mean come on could they please label the damn number for the key (it's getting a little hard to find the stupid number on the back of the case when more are back there, and like HL the numbers printed on the back cover not a stick on tag). -- None-1a. Speaking of piracy. Remember Half-Life: Day One? After it was "warezed" it seemed as if EVERYONE in the shooter community had partaken in its delights. So was that a special exception or are all the high and mighty webmasters out there hypocrites? Ditto for the leaked Q3A IHV. Side issue: I still honestly believe that the Day One OEM demo was packaged and released onto the net by Valve themselves, to drum up some hype for their game. Sgt Hulka- Try running UT in OpenGL mode. I have a C.L.A.P. DDR, and was getting shit fps in UT when I built my new computer(PIII 800EB). My take on this whole RealTournament thing is this. I think the RT team, while honorable in their intentions, failed to secure actual confirmation from Epic before they began work on the mod, thus resulting in the letdown. To start such an undertaking with the intention to sell it as an official UT add-on without prior, full acknowledged support from Epic/Infogrames is foolish at the very least. I want it to be known that I support the RT team however, as they have taken the giant leap forward that too many other gamers today are unwilling to do. Whether their intentions were purely for monetary gain, is inconsequential. I have read all the e-mails and have to say that the RT team is in the wrong for posting them. Irregardless of the legal ramifications, there is a line that just shouldn't be crossed here. Andy has made himself a 'journalist' of sorts by making this information public, and by posting this forum. It may (and I use the term very loosely) be legal for the RT team to publish the e-mails, there is a little something known as jornalistic integrity. Being someone who has earned one of his degrees in journalism, I can say that posting those e-mails was a definite no-no. As far as the legal issue is concerned, I believe that personal e-mail is the private property of those who wrote it, and it is basically just 'on loan' to the person it is sent to. It seems foolish to me that the RT team would want this to go to court, because CliffyB would have the leigons of lawyers from Epic. But don't worry in a super secret email I was told even more secrets of PlanetCrap. One of the surprising ones is you can't suggest anything to be changed here - you must demand it. So I decided on some demands. I noticed the other sites associated with PC and can only imagine they will uphold the intelligence, integrity and research that planet crap has laid forth. Why anyone would take Developium serious is beyond me - I read everything there with a big - wink! On that note. Andy - during the Croteam interview, keep yelling at them of how they are losers for using the unreal engine for Serious Sam. Go out on a limb and spell it loosers. You are starting to piss me off - can't you learn anything from Seth and Andy? Seth - please actually file a lawsuit - that our entertain me with more stories of your miserable little life and if you are going to talk sex - include pictures. Please add another site to your list of sites. I would suggest an auction site where everyone can bid - but you never actually have to complete the transaction and you are only allowed to leave negative feedback. Heh I hate CounterSucks, I dunno why ppl enjoy it but I rather load up AQ2 if I need a dose of realistic Deathmatching, but or I could play Rogue Spear. Im also tired of being told to play it by other bandwagon gamers who migrate from game to game. Actually I would like to thank CS for that aspect, matches on older games are much better since theres less lamers/complainers playing anymore... I played beta 6.whatever, and I hated it. I played beta 7 for 3 hrs and I shouldnt have to force myself to enjoy a game. The weapons in CS have accruracy like ass, I can hit shit in Quake and Rogue Spear, I dont think its me.. And to those who think I just suck...let me know when you want a match in Quake 3, Quake 2, AQ2, Rogue Spear, Shogo, or UT... |

What happened is that CS used to be hot action game with real guns and a money system. It was a bit buggy, but it was FUN. Contrary to popular belief, CS wasn't popular because it was realistic (Bunny hopping while shooting a shotgun at the arc of your jump?... right. Realistic, I'm so goddamn sure.), it became popular because it combined the smooth-interfaced rapidly-changing action of DM/TeamDM with a one-death round-based system ala R6/RS. For example, in CTF in just about any game, you can try to get their flag, but even if you DECIMATE their entire team, killing every last one, they'll still spawn right back in their base, ready to stop you. This makes these games infuriatingly hard for offense. Alternatively, CS also posed objectives (CTH - Cap the Hostage ;), but after you decimated their team, they <b>wouldn't</b> just spawn right back next to you making your efforts futile. Other games might have done similar, but CS was super-easy to get into and easy to understand. Add in some pretty good modeling for the time and the hype factor and you get a mod with high popularity. Around Beta 4 however, they started taking their first steps backward. The community started bitching about how this wasn't fair or this wasn't realistic, so they started toning down the guns accurcy while jumping. Then standing. Then more recoil on rifles. Less accuracy on the G3SG1. A sniper rifle that somehow manages to shoot locations <b>off screen</b> if you try to jump while firing it. A low-caliber submachinegun that's somehow more inaccurate than a 5.56 automatic rifle on full auto... the list goes on. All the guns have been tweaked and abused to the point where it's just a bunch of random spray-and-pray TeamDM on maps that are severely mis-balanced. I've played CS since beta1, and really got into it from 2.5-5.2... but it's been nothing but downhill progress since then: it's not nearly fun enough for action gamers, but insanely unrealistic for the R6/RS fans now.
