The Future of Planetcrap's Message Board
January 7th 2012, 08:01 CET by Charles With Quarter to Three in the process of becoming a forum that no one can post on at all (with a current 1/15th of the posts belonging to banned users), is this finally Planetcrap's chance to regain the spotlight? Will the site revive? WILL MORN COME BACK? Probably not. |

Thanks. Screens it is. |
#646 by Shadarr #643 by Milan Brezovský Yes, because people stopped writing emails and taking notes in 2010. No, they got touchscreens. And started writing incredibly slow. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.
I just sign in through Facebook, does that mean I don't have a user name for Draw Something? Caryn, did you ever start selling that Octopus on a t-shirt anywhere? I'd love to get one for my daughter. |
That probably explains a lot. Ive never used Draw Something, just assumed it was game centre. |
I'm Funkdrunk in game center, but I don't think many of my games use it. Ascension maybe. Funk. |
I'm dr_octagon in game centre. |
jj: I just sign in through Facebook, does that mean I don't have a user name for Draw Something? Pretty much. But if you go into Settings you can create a username for yourself. Otherwise people can only find you if they're your friends on facebook. She's probably had sex with like 4 different guys by now and has no idea who he is anymore, his face lost in a memory sea of dicks.
You can use the assigned name they give you, but it'll be something like omgpop293034529089120. |
Ok, I updated my name if you can't get to me on Facebook. Jeremy.johnsen |
FYEAH BULLETSTORM 5€ Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.
Jjohnsen: no, Threadless rejected the design so it's not a t-shirt currently. I suppose I could do CafePress? I dunno what the best place is these days. |
So this may seem like a silly question, but is there really any functional difference between various ebook services? I've currently got Kobo, Kindle, and iBooks all installed on my iPad. Kobo seems to have this weird social media thing attached to it (plus: achievements!). Kindle I assume would have the largest selection. But iBooks seems the easiest to just buy a book. I guess it comes down to price. Is any one of the three significantly cheaper than the others? |
Anecdotal, but I usually compare prices between iBooks/Amazon and the Kindle stuff seems to be cheaper more often. For me. \"Making love to a woman is like working on an assembly line. No matter how good you are at it, you\'ll eventually be replaced by a foreigner or a machine.\"
I'm happy with Kindle because I can also read on my BB/Android/PC/web. Reading .pdf is clumsy and slow, but works, and I haven't needed to read any epub books so far. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.
Evernote is goddamn annoying*. Anyone here use an alternative? I use the app to collect various clippings from the net and for thoughts on projects I'd like to work on, but googling a bit hasn't really resulted in any obvious alternatives. Well, there is Microsoft OneNote... * e.g groups don't show up in the iOS app at all. And notes can't be renamed from the iOS app, wut? And their website is literally unusable on an iPad because they do a bunch of fancy drag-n-drop stuff, can't even click on a note. Bah. |
I tried the catch.com app with a free account and I'm quite happy with it for what I need. I.e. jotting down ideas, syncing them to the server and offline storage. (I'm looking at you, google fucking docs for android.) Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.
My only issue with the Kindle stuff is that syncing works perfectly between the Kindle and the iOS app, but if I read with the Windows 8 Metro app, or the Chrome app... it never syncs up when I go to load the books up again on the Kindle or iOS app. Dicks. \"Making love to a woman is like working on an assembly line. No matter how good you are at it, you\'ll eventually be replaced by a foreigner or a machine.\"

Looks promising Milan, thanks. |
Windows 8 lol. I think I'll pass, the metro apps on the dev preview annoyed the fuck out of me. ~~~ So how about Samsung Galaxy Note? + It's got a stylus so it could be good for scribbling notes, + it's got the resolution of my Transformer, + it's the same price as BlackBerry 9900 with twice the hardware, + and I don't have to worry about RIM going tits-up. - I would lose BBM, which I use to talk with exactly 1 person. - I would lose push email, and instead get like whole several second delay in getting email. Or maybe I should get HTC One X (Endeavor), since, you know, I totally need a quad-core phone. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.
The Note seems absolutely brilliant, save for two things: - Samsung hasn't been particularly great with updates lately - pocketability is virtually nonexistent (well, duh) But if you can live with the size ( = have small enough backup phone), I'd say go for it. ¤ "Apple hates everyone now." - BJB
Milan: Yeah, I think Windows 8 is going to be widely ignored outside of maybe tablets (and I'm not expecting Windows tablets to make a huge impact either). |
anaqer: thanks for the warning, they already promised ICS update, so let's hope they don't delay. Also I carry my phone in bag's phone pocket, and BB9000 still leaves some free space, so I should be good. deadlock: yeah... I mean, I wish MS luck and everything, but having Windows on 10" tablet would be like having Android on two non-touch 24" LCDs... you just take your favourite apps and habits and philosophy with you, and they don't fit the other format (e.g. apps on Windows tend to have miniature buttons; apps on Android take way too much screen space for mouse input). Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.
I know all about Samsung's promise, but as an owner of a SE Xperia '11 class phone, I've been "burned" (well, actually, Gingerbread is quite alright). Sure, the update will come, but... ¤ "Apple hates everyone now." - BJB

samsung has been rolling out ICS all month; any delays at this point are due to the carriers. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" - "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

err, all LAST month. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" - "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

Yeah, Asus also said they were done with ICS update for Transformer and then it took like two months for Google to approve the update (which was still buggy anyway). Either way, I'll try to delay my instant gratification for a month or two while my berry still works. Also, I'm buying a non-branded phone as I don't want a 2-year contract, and the carrier with 6-month contracts doesn't offer a good price, so I guess bye bye $700. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.

Android: Tron Edition. |

I like the fonts. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.

Anyway, any to-do list app/services worth recommending? I don't need any priority, GPS, estimated nose scratchings needed to complete the task and such bullshit, just a list with subitems and online sync. I've tried GTasks, Astrid Tasks, Remember The Milk and I don't particularly like either of them. On BlackBerry I use Got-2 Pro and it does what I need, minus the sync. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.
Either of them... ffs. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.
Wunderlist? I don't actually use it (a simple post-it app is all I need most of the time), but it seemed an OK enough solution. ¤ "Apple hates everyone now." - BJB

I just got a Samsung Galaxy SII to replace my BlackBerry. I like it a lot. 52 Weeks and Something's On Movie Blog

Do you miss anything on your Bold? Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.

there is nothing about a blackberry to ever miss. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" - "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

Milan- The only thing I really miss is the physical keyboard. However, I'm getting used to the Swype function. 52 Weeks and Something's On Movie Blog

Happy Easter, Knuckleheads. Zep-- w0rd up!

So much for my patronizing rants about delayed gratification! Note acquired. Still miss a physical keyboard. Stylus is great, everybody who says it's just a gimmick can go duck themselves. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.

Software keyboard is shit, and always will be. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.

There's also voice to text, I find it surprisingly useful sometimes. This post was written by dictation. |

#686 by Milan Brezovský Software keyboard is shit, and always will be. Did you try Swype? It's not really my thing, but I've seen people who used to shit on virtual keyboards come to swear by it. ¤ "Apple hates everyone now." - BJB

#687 by gaggle There's also voice to text, I find it surprisingly useful sometimes. This post was written by dictation. I don't like shouting on my phone in a tram, nor whispering to it in an office. Also, I don't like speaking in general. Talking to myself, maybe, but that at least doesn't sound weird to me. Saying "I hope you die and eat a bag of moldy dicks" aloud doesn't sound quite right, you know? #688 by anaqer Did you try Swype? It's not really my thing, but I've seen people who used to shit on virtual keyboards come to swear by it. Not yet, but I was intrigued since yot said he uses it. To be honest I got more excited about the stylus, but small stylus + small area where you can write without having anywhere to rest your hand on + glass screen with no friction = not ideal. And by not ideal I mean not usable for emails / texting / long notes. It's great for what it's advertised for, taking a screenshot of maps and marking a pub and sending it to a stranger/tourist. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.

I hope you die and eat a bag of monkey dicks I hope you die and eat a bag of move the pics I hope you die and eat a pack I'll move the dates I hope you die and eat a bag I'll move the dates I hope you die and eat a bag of Mulldae dates Yeah this isn't working. |

The iOS game Waking Mars is really really cool. I guess it's a puzzle game, but the overriding sense is one of exploration and growing mystery. It's ostensibly a 2D side scroller, you play a scientist exploring a cave on Mars when shit starts going down, and you have to progress by mastering the environment. IMO the less you know the better, I saw a split-second of the gameplay in some video and liked the look so much I just downloaded it. You should not necessarily see the whole trailer if you have a similar reaction: The trailer. I've also played Crimson - Steam Pirates, and it's pretty cool. It's a turn-based strategy game with a cute story, you move ships around and use various powers. Beyond the initial free episode there are additional paid downloadable content, and they are alright as well if a tad too expensive. Trailer is here. |
gaggle, you might like Steambirds and/or Steambirds Survival. The gameplay of Steam Pirates is lifted straight from those. BUYBUYBUY
You'd think I would like that game yes, but I'm pretty sure I played this game on the PC a while ago and was not fond of it. I think my plane was too vulnerable, battles were like wars of attrition where you slowly get more and more hurt. And no story or context to speak of. But you're right that Steam Pirates looks almost like a carbon copy of it, frighteningly so now that I've watched some YouTube clips. |
Milan- Swype is pretty nice. In fact, I find myself trying to do it on my iPad from time to time. 52 Weeks and Something's On Movie Blog

Another option is SwiftKey X. It's predictive engine is so good, it will generally figure out the word you're trying to type in 3 letters. Funk. |

FUCK. I'm going to Kiev, Ukraine for business on the 23rd. My boss agreed to let me stick an off day onto the trip so I could take a tour to Chernobyl. Now it turns out it's closed for a private party (imagine that) on the day I was supposed to go there. So close.
