Geek Christmas 2011
November 17th 2011, 06:40 CET by m0nty TES V: Skyrim, Battlefield 3, CoD: Modern Warfare 3, Saints Row 3, Batman: Arkham City, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Assassin's Creed: Revelations... it's geek Christmas! Insert your most-awaited new releases here if I neglected to mention them (but they suck and you probably suck too). Just to keep it all in one place. Well, two places, here and The Thread. |

I would call the menu an improvement over default Oblivion UI, as at least scrolling works (both with scrollwheel and WSAD) and it's got more categories. That said, there's plenty of space for improvement. Overall, I'm very happy with the game. Also, I find it funny that they mimicked some HDR effects from Morrowind Graphics Extender (namely auto-adjusting contrast from how dark/light is the spot you're looking at). Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.

The inventory and spell menus may be labeled as being "alright". Takes a bit of getting used to (and scrollin' - lots of scrollin'), but that's par for the course now. But the fucking skill menu..? DIIEEEEE. ¤ "Apple hates everyone now." - BJB
I find it better to attempt avoiding the mouse when navigating menus in Skyrim. |
Just hit level 25 in Skyrim. Loving the game. |
So, if I didn't like Oblivion or Morrowind, does anyone think there's a chance I'd like Skyrim? blog | Twitter | The Psychology of Gaming

No, because you're a sick deviant who hates joy. "One part disembowels me while another slowly eats its way through the gas line. As I bleed out on the floor, it reminds me that I need to buy milk." - Jibble

It is the same game over and over since Daggerfall, with just minor iterations of the gameplay systems and an incremental addition to lore. |
Not much. It's basically a prettier, more polished Oblivion. There are a good number of changes in the mechanics, sure, but the core gameplay is essentially untouched. (I'm at level 37, btw, after about 40 hours). ¤ "Apple hates everyone now." - BJB

I went to a game dev conference (Game Developer Session 2011) and I talked to the guy who was responsible for sound design / music / etc for Descent II, Summoner, Freespace 1+2, The Punisher, Saints Row 1+2, Red Faction 1+2+G and is now working on "AAA indie" game. (I hate how that term became a real thing.) Anyway, it had some interesting talks and I talked also to one of Adobe's Gaming Evangelists and saw Unreal Engine running in Flash 12 incubator build and a few other games for tablets and phones and browsers and stuff. Skyrim is good, I like how it took some things from Morrowind and some from Oblivion. All in all, better than Oblivion, haven't played enough to see if I like it better than Morrowind though. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.
Also, there was a talk on gamification (and I immediately remembered G-man's Gamification Is Bullshit link). I asked the guy what books on game design he recommends. He said that it's better to follow Twitter. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.

The menu system in Skyrim is shit, and it's basically more of the same, but that hasn't stopped me from playing for about 20 hours already. Jamie, I think the only difference really is menus and shouts which is just a variation of spells. You won't like it if you didn't like any of the other games. I'm thinking of getting SR3 on the PC. Has anyone heard anything good or bad? |
Jamie, definitely, if you didn't like prior Bethesda RPGs, Skyrim won't change your opinion. I still don't fully get the hate of the menu system, but maybe because I'm playing on console? I find it to be pretty damn good. I find it faster to navigate than most. |
Well, I didn't say all Bethesda RPGs. I loved the last 2 Fallout games. blog | Twitter | The Psychology of Gaming

Hmm, not sure what to say, then. The mechanics are pretty similar across all of their games. If you don't like their brand of high fantasy, then it won't change your opinion. |

Well, guess who just got scheduled to be on the Quarter to Three Games podcast in December? Hint: It's me. blog | Twitter | The Psychology of Gaming

#52 by Shadarr I was going to guess it was the guy from Physiology of Gaming. That guy's a tool. #53 by CheesyPoof How about you we pencil you in to not be on the PlanetCrap podcast and we can steal their thunder? I'm already scheduled to not be on a bunch of podcasts. I don't want to over-not-commit. I guess I should probably actually listen to some of the recent QT3 podcasts to see what to expect. blog | Twitter | The Psychology of Gaming

I look forward to not listening to it. |

What are you discussing? |

The new format is that each person picks a news story, a thread, and a game to discuss. I'll probably talk about AC: Revelations. blog | Twitter | The Psychology of Gaming

I bought Skyrim. The first big budget game I've payed full price for in forever. It's easily worth twice what I paid. I have about 25+ hours into it and am just digging it. Haven't run into any game mechanics that really annoy and the story line + *OMGSPOILAR*dragon fighting*OMGSPOILAR* is pretty cool. And sword fighting, both with the shield and without, is both simple and full of depth. I actually restarted my usual sneaking + archery + light armor + magic + sword and shield Jack-Of-All-Trades guy for a Heavy Armor + 2-handed weapon + mage I-Burn-And-Gut-You type of guy that has no need for bows or sneaking (unless he wants to listen to conversations of bad guys). They did a lot of things right in this game. The UI would definitely be better on the console, but the game is just effing gorgeous on the PC. The coolest damn snowstorm mountains I have ever seen in any game bar none. And the exploring is just fantastic. The combat, as I said above, is satisfying in melee but also as a mage (dual wielding being a way to power up spells is a great idea). I honestly, and I hate to say this, don't have much to complain about the game beyond the UI a little bit. I'm currently madly in love with it. We'll see how it goes longer term. Skyrim is owning my life. I haven't had much time to play it, though. I'm trying to learn 3D. I made tall and skinny and short and squat cartoonishly proportioned zsphere armatures yesterday and am attempting my first Zbrush model today. I'm following the (very easy to follow) Scott Spencer intro to Zbrush 4 videos from Gnomon. I've only ever made one low-poly model ever, but immediately clicked with Zbrush. I'm hitting a wall with some of my anatomy knowledge, but sourcing reference as I go. This is where my first attempt at a Zbrush sculpt sits after a few hours of tinkering. I still haven't touched the hands, feet, legs, and butt since the initial roughing in of the form. They're next. I'm loving 3D. It feels like cheating after years of having to describe form with line and mass to just slap it together and place the forms where they go. I think I'm hooked. |
#67 by TreeFrog Oh fuck yeah. Let me back to Vvardenfell, fuckers. Now to wait 3 years for all official and unofficial patches and Tamriel Rebuilt for Skyrim and some DLC as good as Shivering Isles. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.
I've still got the last few main quests left to do with this character, but I think I'm done with the game after that. I finished all the Dark Brotherhood and College quests, got Thanedom in half the holds, did tons of "ooh, what's over there?" wandering about... 60 hours, I'd say that's not a bad number for now. The rest of the faction stuff will have to wait for a fresh character whenever the ultimate edition with all the DLCs comes out. ¤ "Apple hates everyone now." - BJB

So did anyone go out at 4 AM and buy some crap today? 52 Weeks and Something's On Movie Blog

Best Buy had a TV deal (Sharp 42" 1080p LCD for $200) that I would have considered lining up for, but by the time I saw the line outside Best Buy on Thursday there were already 40-50 people there, no way I would have gotten it. It would have probably been an upgrade, but I don't need a new TV that badly. I've been surfing amazon and the deal sites all day though. Haven't bought much yet (Just Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on XBLA, for 320 points) but I'm close to pulling the trigger on a new A/V receiver. If Arkham City hits $30 or below again (it was a amazon lightning deal yesterday) then I'll probably bite on that. |
it's 24 bucks on EA's Origin. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" - "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

Those TV deals just annoy me. They stock 10 or so per store and sell them out to campers immediately. That item is for all intents and purposes not available for purchase, so advertising it seems wrong. Its only purpose is to whip people up into a pepper-spraying shopping frenzy. blog | Twitter | The Psychology of Gaming

I don't believe in Black Friday. 150m people went out and shopping on that day. Ugh. Don't get me wrong, I like a good deal, but the whole thing is blown way out of proportion and just silly at this point imho. Why does everything have to be about race Huggin??!??! |
Of course that's what I mean. If you take me literally you may often run into comprehension problems. To be fair, you may run into comprehension problems anyway. I mean, I am talking on a level many just can't comprehend! ;) So yes, I don't believe in supporting Black Friday. It's a ridiculous concept that prays on peoples behavior patterns to take advantage of them. That's not to say marketing/promotions aren't doing it all year long, but this day is just so egregious is bothers me. The ultimate bait and switch bullshit. Using behavioral psychology to take advantage of people is not high on my list of good things. "programmers talk from a very deep gnome cavern, full of gold mechanics" - wisdom from the ancients

I asked for a Nerf gun as my Secret Saint Nicholas gift and got the reply (via anonymous online name-drawing tool): "Is this serious?!" To which I replied: "Yes, but if you think it's too childish I could go for a nice Lego set." She's probably had sex with like 4 different guys by now and has no idea who he is anymore, his face lost in a memory sea of dicks.

Nice call, Gunpoint. Now, I don't want to get all crazy, so I'm suggesting this for next year, not this one since xmas is here...but maybe planetcrappers want to do a secret santa thing? It would be fun since we are such a small community and know each other at least somewhat... Thoughts from the grumpers?
