2011 Crapperpalooza
August 15th 2011, 20:47 CEST by m0nty The projected itinerary is as follows: October 2: Melbourne to LA to San Francisco via plane 3-4: visit Silicon Valley and catch up with some entrepreneur peeps 5: San Francisco to Boston via plane 6-8: Hang out with McBain, Hugin and other Bostonian Crappers 9: Boston to New York via train (KATG Bingo that evening) 10-12: Hang out in New York, maybe catch up with Funkdrunk and other NY Crappers 13: Visit Cheesypoof in New Jersey 14: New Jersey to Chicago via rental car 15-16: Hang out with jjz, Chunkstyle, Penguinx and other Chi-town-area Crappers 17: Chicago to Indianapolis via rental car 18: Descend upon Gabe and Brett 19-20: Indianapolis to New Orleans (might dawdle here a bit, maybe stop off a night on the way) 21-23: Hang out in New Orleans, possibly with Jibble, or with a bevy of topless babes (tough choice I know) 24: New Orleans to Beaumont via rental car, visit (hopefully) with UncleJeet and his brood 25: Beaumont to Dallas via rental car 26: Visit Jibble, Mrs Jibble and their plushly-cushioned abode 27: Dallas to LA via plane 28-29: Disneyland, bitches! Or other LA things. 30: LA to Melbourne via plane Part of this itinerary is fixed, particularly around some football matches (MIN @ CHI on the 16th, IND @ NO on the 23rd). The rest of it is open to suggestion, especially the rental car bits. Sadly, Bob and honeypower will be moving interstate and internationally respectively, mere weeks before I blow through Alabama. Which is rather suspicious if you ask me, but hardly unexpected. For those of you who had heard about this previously and are wondering why I stop at Texas, given that my original concept was to breeze right up the left coast to Vancouver... fear not, I have just delayed that part for 12 months. You won't get away that easily. I realise I have not asked some of you aforementioned for permission to visit yet... consider this my request! I will, of course, be contacting people privately and asking nicely. And if you're not on the list but want to get on it, post or forever hold your peace! I want to meet as many of you as my liver can stand. And if some of you are too shy or frightened, that's cool. Except Hugin, no excuses for you. I shall bring wonderment, joy and good vibes to America. I'll deliver more hope and freedom than Obama ever could. It shall be glorious. Oh yes. |

#80 by Gunp01nt Did Tom explicitly state he was leaving? I imagine if he bars himself from partaking in his own forum he might just as soon shut it down. I think he did. Someone posted a quote, apparently from Tom, saying that he was staying out of the forums but would continue updating the front page etc. I'm not sure how that works given that the main audience for the stuff on the front page appears to be the forum and most of the contributors to the podcast are drawn from the forum. Anyway, he's a bit of a drama queen so the likelihood is that he'll start posting again in a few weeks. Whoop-de-fucking-doo. There is a lot of Tomcockgobbling going on over there at the moment. I too hope that this place gets a lease of life from the shenanigans over there but I'm not holding my breath. Although, you never know. |

Jaysus, the two topics in the submission bin are there since the start of last year! |
lwf: They bumped the specs on the Airs with Lion. So I guess SL doesn't have the right drivers - particularly no support for the display. Seems lame. The improved display is one of the main reasons I went with the Air. It's just occurred to me that I haven't noticed any of the issues you're having with Lion because I'm generally connecting from my Macbook (Lion) to my Linux file server or my Macmini (SL, because there's only a gig of RAM in it). If I was doing things the other way round I'd probably be having more problems. Yay me? Does anyone have any idea why the Chrome version of the PC user-script doesn't work most of the time? |
deadlock (#85): Jaysus, the two topics in the submission bin are there since the start of last year! Hello dermot, welcome to PlanetCrap. |
I tried to drum up some traffic for PC. We got Ned to post so that's a win. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

Man PC really needs a mobile interface. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

Shadarr (#83): Are you a millionaire yet? No? Then put a cork in it. What does that mean, anyway? I have to be a millionaire to criticise Tom? How peculiar. |
m0nty: Hello dermot, welcome to PlanetCrap. The fact that I never bother looking at the submission bin should be proof that I'm an old hand on PC :P m0nty: What does that mean, anyway? I have to be a millionaire to criticise Tom? How peculiar. I don't think even being a millionaire qualifies you to criticise Tom Chick. CheesyPoof: What does that mean, anyway? I have to be a millionaire to criticise Tom? How peculiar. I've thought about writing one as a sort of exercise in learning Android and/or Web App development. |

No, you can criticize all you want. You have to be a millionaire to tell other people what to talk about. You're such a tool Shadarr. You have to be a billionaire to tell other people what to talk about. Inflation, dude. Fuck, on paper I'm probably a millionaire and not even my son does what I tell him. |
Hi Ned! 1. I'm great. Gave birth to our son, Markus, a little over two weeks ago. He's super adorable, even if we are up every two hours during the night. I forgot the rest of the questions. I don't think I know the answers to them anyway. |
Shadarr: I just moved, so it's probably going to be a few weeks before I get booked on a show. Are you on FB? That's the easiest way for me to invite people to shows, because it's where most of them are booked. I am on the Facebook and do check it occasionally. I imagine it is falling-down-the-stairs easy to find my name there. "I don't bemoan the great paste" - LPMiller

Also: congrats, Caryn. You'll get plenty of sleep in just a few short years! "I don't bemoan the great paste" - LPMiller

Good luck with the early days, Caryn. Sleep will happen again, it just doesn't seem like it now! I still don't remember much of the first six months of my eldest daughters life. ;) "programmers talk from a very deep gnome cavern, full of gold mechanics" - wisdom from the ancients

God, this Dead Island release is hilariously bad. \"Making love to a woman is like working on an assembly line. No matter how good you are at it, you\'ll eventually be replaced by a foreigner or a machine.\"

#97 by Matt Perkins Good luck with the early days, Caryn. Sleep will happen again, it just doesn't seem like it now! I still don't remember much of the first six months of my eldest daughters life. ;) You don't remember anything, hippie. Also, Caryn, let us know when you get so sleep deprived that you harbor homicidal thoughts toward you little bundle of joy. |
She might luck out. Our second kid was able to sleep through the night just a few months in. If only our first was as agreeable - he was the complete opposite being colicky and all. |
Buying a puppy helps you remember those sleepless nights. I swear our dog had a bladder the size of a pea those first three months. |

'Sup, guys? 52 Weeks and Something's On Movie Blog

'Sup. You need to look at your team, too many TEs, the waiver wire has been open. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

I fixed my starting lineup. I'm good, just waiting for things to shake down. I'm going Full m0nty this season. Trades every other day, waiver line raiding, you name it. 52 Weeks and Something's On Movie Blog

Cool. I was worried you were going to be a zombie. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

Take it to the sports thread. We're trying to have a discussion here. |

Yes... discussion. Thinking... Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.

Poof- Naw, I'm all in. 52 Weeks and Something's On Movie Blog

Oh, about fucking time! Gearbox started [optionally] collecting data on Borderlands gameplay. FFS, I thought this would be the industry standard by now. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.

Valve has been doing it for awhile... "programmers talk from a very deep gnome cavern, full of gold mechanics" - wisdom from the ancients

I'm not sure it has any real value, and if it does, might it not just cause a race towards pleasing the lowest common denominator? I understand that these are just entertainment products after all, but I can think of plenty of situations where making a work of art palatable to the greatest number of people possible could ruin its quality. |

I understand that these are just entertainment products after all, but I can think of plenty of situations where making a work of art palatable to the greatest number of people possible could ruin its quality. Here's the value. If 90% of your user base isn't figuring X, then you need to change X in some way. I know Valve used it because when they did Ep2, they changed the elevator fight to make it easier. I know they did this because that was literally my favorite part of the game, because it was freaky and challenging. And when I tried it after, it wasn't half as freaky because it wasn't as challenging. That said, the data did show them what it was supposed to, I just don't agree with the way they fixed the problem. But apparently it worked a lot better for others after that, so maybe I was just an outlier... "programmers talk from a very deep gnome cavern, full of gold mechanics" - wisdom from the ancients

There's a staggering number of people who don't finish single player campaigns (in games that are primarily single-player experiences). For those, it's very important that your game doesn't contain areas that are frustrating - usually it's platformy jumping bullshit. Valve was the first I know of who's been collecting specific map info (location of player deaths). The first company harvesting data on efficiency of weapons (frags/deaths/time holding) and game modes (time spent, score) was Epic with Unreal Tournament series. Recently there's also been Dead Space 2 with Data Cracker. [pdf] [pdf] [the same shit as audio for $4] For multiplayer games, these information are even more important, as they usually rely on balance/fun and replayability much more than single-player games. While G-Man is right about the art, I don't think Gearbox is particularly famous for creativity, so I applaud this. Hopefully it will help them figure out that walking is boring, interface is awful and Atlas Corporation is full of assholes. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.

To quote the presentation, And don't believe all of the hype. Analytics will not steal your design soul. The sentiment I have felt around the conference this week is that design and analytics must work together … which is excellent. What frightens designers is when they see analytics being used as a means to achieve gameplay where the primary goal to squeeze money out of the player. But if your primary goal is to create a deeper and more accurate connection with your population of players, going in with analytics can only help. Remember, it’s “Play Intelligence”. I’m not personally studying and developing analytic tools to increase my Average Revenue Per User. It’s about gaining really cool insights into how people play and figuring out where to go from there. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.

1. I graduated. Quit my part-time shitty ass retail job. Working full-time in a less shitty office job. 2. He's dead. 3. Possibly. 4. Tomorrow. 5. Absolutely. |

Yay Squeaky! |

Squeaky! Where are you working now? Are you still living in Anmore or have you moved closer to civilization? "I hope you one day decide to smarten the fuck up so I can stand to look at your posts." - gaggle

'Sup, Squeaky? 52 Weeks and Something's On Movie Blog

Squeaky! Where are you working now? I'm working as an AR/staff accountant for a fairly large corporation. I get to work in an office tower downtown. I'm feeling a little like Sam Lowry. It's bliss. I'm also taking part-time night school courses to get my B.Tech in Accounting. have you moved closer to civilization? Still living in my parents basement, where I spend my Saturday nights running a dungeons and dragons campaign (why yes, I am almost 30). Well look who came crawling back. Love you too. 'Sup, Squeaky? 'Sup yot. |
You're living in Anmore and working downtown? How long is the commute? I've been working from home since I moved to Vancouver because I can't be bothered to spend 30 minutes bussing downtown. "I hope you one day decide to smarten the fuck up so I can stand to look at your posts." - gaggle
The commute is about 35 minutes: 10 minutes to the train station, then 25 minutes sleeping on the west coast express to waterfront station, about three blocks from where I work. |
Sweet. "I hope you one day decide to smarten the fuck up so I can stand to look at your posts." - gaggle

I'm in Mountain View now. I'm too lazy to read the whole thread. Are you having a mini PC meetup on the 3rd or 4th? |
Milan, Analytics aren't evil, but they make dumbfuck pencil pushers think they can data themselves into a good design, without any risk, as long as us designers just be good little people and do what they tell us to do. After all, designers are whiny subjective dilattantes. Data is objective and powerful and people who have data are smart. THAT is the danger. Seen it happen time and time again. Know-nothing MBA's armed with clipboards and risk aversion basically co-opt the design process by deciding what to test. Of course, they test stupid, limited, small-minded things that please their fearful number-crunchy souls. They ask questions like 'should the button be on the top or bottom?' when we've been shouting all along 'there was no need to stick a button in there if you'd have just listened to us in the first place you numbnuts!' Not bitter! |
Making tax applications doesn't really map to game design. |
Usability maps to usability just fine. Both provide an experience. |
I'm gonna be in LA on Sept 26 to see a show, can probably arrange to be in SF on Oct 3 or 4 to meet m0nty. Trunks, can my gf and I horn in on this Lucasfilm Studio tour. "I hope you one day decide to smarten the fuck up so I can stand to look at your posts." - gaggle
Go play Pathologic and tell me that any aspect of that design can be translated to a primarily utilitarian application. |
Schnee - Oh, I agree. I was referring to that IGDA presentation on Data Cracker that mentioned how artists on the team were worried it would kill their creativity and generally thought that pencil pushers would use it to breathe down their neck or something. As much as I am fascinated by analytics, MVT, genetic A/B tests and such junk and the insight that you can gain from them, I would hate to adopt the ultra-pragmatic ways of Google where every design change needs to be verified by A/B tests before put into production. But then maybe the web would be a more usable place if everyone did that. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.
Shadarr, probably won't be an issue. More details forthcoming later in the week. |
I don't think I will G-Man. |
Yeah google's a/b tests are interesting. They've made some pretty non-conservative features though so I feel they're appropriate as an example of arguably successful analytics-enhanced design. |
