2011 Crapperpalooza
August 15th 2011, 20:47 CEST by m0nty

The projected itinerary is as follows:

October 2: Melbourne to LA to San Francisco via plane
3-4: visit Silicon Valley and catch up with some entrepreneur peeps
5: San Francisco to Boston via plane
6-8: Hang out with McBain, Hugin and other Bostonian Crappers
9: Boston to New York via train (KATG Bingo that evening)
10-12: Hang out in New York, maybe catch up with Funkdrunk and other NY Crappers
13: Visit Cheesypoof in New Jersey
14: New Jersey to Chicago via rental car
15-16: Hang out with jjz, Chunkstyle, Penguinx and other Chi-town-area Crappers
17: Chicago to Indianapolis via rental car
18: Descend upon Gabe and Brett
19-20: Indianapolis to New Orleans (might dawdle here a bit, maybe stop off a night on the way)
21-23: Hang out in New Orleans, possibly with Jibble, or with a bevy of topless babes (tough choice I know)
24: New Orleans to Beaumont via rental car, visit (hopefully) with UncleJeet and his brood
25: Beaumont to Dallas via rental car
26: Visit Jibble, Mrs Jibble and their plushly-cushioned abode
27: Dallas to LA via plane
28-29: Disneyland, bitches! Or other LA things.
30: LA to Melbourne via plane

Part of this itinerary is fixed, particularly around some football matches (MIN @ CHI on the 16th, IND @ NO on the 23rd). The rest of it is open to suggestion, especially the rental car bits. Sadly, Bob and honeypower will be moving interstate and internationally respectively, mere weeks before I blow through Alabama. Which is rather suspicious if you ask me, but hardly unexpected.

For those of you who had heard about this previously and are wondering why I stop at Texas, given that my original concept was to breeze right up the left coast to Vancouver... fear not, I have just delayed that part for 12 months. You won't get away that easily.

I realise I have not asked some of you aforementioned for permission to visit yet... consider this my request! I will, of course, be contacting people privately and asking nicely. And if you're not on the list but want to get on it, post or forever hold your peace! I want to meet as many of you as my liver can stand. And if some of you are too shy or frightened, that's cool. Except Hugin, no excuses for you.

I shall bring wonderment, joy and good vibes to America. I'll deliver more hope and freedom than Obama ever could. It shall be glorious. Oh yes.

Woo! As the OP says, I'm there on the 3rd and 4th.

The 4th would likely work best for my schedule. How much time do you have free? Depending on that, I may be able to throw in a tour of the ranches.

I'll email you specifics once I get things set up.

I'm on steam, but haven't touched it since I installed it on the Mac for free Portal. User name is TheJibble. Good luck seeing me online ever.

Also I wouldn't buy you coal. I'd probably get you a glass or a spoon or something minimally useful.

This seems as good a place as any.

I have questions!

1. How is everyone?
2. How is morn?
3. Does anyone have a topic that's been sitting in their pipeline for over nine years like I do?
4. When is Planetcrap 7.0 coming?
5. Will avatars ruin Planetcrap? Y/N?

1. I am rather stressed out, with a big business deal in my pipeline to sell out for interweb squillions.
2. morn is now living in Berlin, doing short-term corporate programming as always. Seems like there are a lot of Crappers who do that, none of whom are really happy with it. We were discussing it last night in IRC when Ashiran dropped by. It's not the greatest outcome, I reckon.
3. I generally get topics pushed on the rare occasion I am moved to create one. You could too if you came to IRC. Thanks Gabe!

I'm pretty annoyed with Apple right now. File sharing in Lion is a piece of shit, they switched from samba which always worked flawlessly to some new bullshit. So now I can't open .doc files shared from the macbook to the pc. They also fucked up the VNC and made is half as fast. I would be fine with just downgrading back to Snow Leopard but they won't let you install an older OS than the one your piece of shit apple computer came with. I'm half tempted to just install windows 7 on it and give up on OSX for good, they haven't made any bona fide improvement in years, they have only broken shit.

I'm trying a samba 3 workaround right now and if it doesn't work I expect I'll have to stab someone 33 times.

Thanks for the answers!

I did actually notice the recurring Santa hats outside the yuletide season and figured it must have become some kind of PC tradition.

Shadarr, I will take you up on that. When and where do you your stand-up?

Also, I tried 25peeps.com and got a page not found. I am kind of 50/50 on that probably being a good thing.

They haven't 'switched from samba ... to some now bullshit'. When you activate sharing in OS X, it always enables AFP by default. You have to manually enable samba.

Also, are you connecting to the Macbook from the PC via VNC? Because if you are then it was always shit-slow - Apple use a proprietary version of the protocol that is mostly-compatible with non-Apple clients but doesn't support compression.

Finally, I'm surprised that you can't install SL on your MacBook - they haven't introduced any new models recently, they've just started shipping the existing range with Lion pre-installed instead of SL. What problem are you running into (bearing in mind that pretty much *no* operating system on Earth supports downgrading cleanly to an earlier version).

#72 by lwf
2011-09-03 14:33:32
I haven't even tried. They have a kb article on it basically saying you will get a black screen if you try. Apparently it has always been apple policy to disallow downgrading from the OS version shipped with. For instance if you bought a macbook pro that shipped with SL 10.6.6 you'd need to use your restore DVD and not a 10.6 DVD. Relevant link.

Also, they have switched from samba. They are using an in-house SMB instead, and it fucking blows. I can't open .doc files in Word 2003, I get a privilege error - now that is as much a problem with Office 2003 as it is with Lion, but it fucking worked fine in SL. Also, file sharing in SL seemed much, much faster overall when editing/saving documents over the network.

I'm just pissed off at Apple's arbitrary controlling bullshit. I would be perfectly happy if I could just downgrade to SL. I might even consider returning this fucking thing.

Ah, it's a Macbook Air. It's odd that you wouldn't be able to downgrade that though - they haven't bumped the specs since Lion was released, have they?

Re: SMB - I hadn't realised they'd ditched Samba. That does seem a bit boneheaded, even if they do appear to have added support for SMB2 to their own suite.

They bumped the specs on the Airs with Lion. So I guess SL doesn't have the right drivers - particularly no support for the display. Seems lame. The improved display is one of the main reasons I went with the Air.

I think he did. Someone posted a quote, apparently from Tom, saying that he was staying out of the forums but would continue updating the front page etc. I'm not sure how that works given that the main audience for the stuff on the front page appears to be the forum and most of the contributors to the podcast are drawn from the forum. Anyway, he's a bit of a drama queen so the likelihood is that he'll start posting again in a few weeks. Whoop-de-fucking-doo. There is a lot of Tomcockgobbling going on over there at the moment.

I too hope that this place gets a lease of life from the shenanigans over there but I'm not holding my breath. Although, you never know.

It's just occurred to me that I haven't noticed any of the issues you're having with Lion because I'm generally connecting from my Macbook (Lion) to my Linux file server or my Macmini (SL, because there's only a gig of RAM in it). If I was doing things the other way round I'd probably be having more problems. Yay me?
