Do we really not have a new topic for this yet?

I've never submitted a topic before, so I'm not good at writing introductions.  But we need a place to post info and tips and opinions and such about this new, possibly awesome product.  (Also, it would be great if I managed to get my first submission voted through.  AND I used proper capitalization!)

But if you must know, things with the girlfriend are fine.  There's not really much to tell to be honest... she's a girl, I periodically go and stay with her.  I'm happily avoiding that being a permanent arrangement.

I'm one of those fools who are somewhat interested in stereoscopic 3D.

If I buy a 3D monitor I get:

* Possibly 120Hz refresh on my Mac, and maybe games in 3D if I bootcamp into Windows and install whatever drivers are necessary for AMD cards to output 3D.

* 3D console games, yeehaw Killzone 3 in 3D! Except I don't actually have a PS3 yet, sooo... and I don't think my 360 is likely to suddenly output everything in 3D.

(the monitor I'm looking at for this is the Acer HN274H which supports Nvidia's 3D and HDMI 1.4 3D)

Alternatively I pay 1/3rd to 1/2 the price and just get an ordinary monitor, and leave the three-dees for later.

Drats, by writing this post I just persuaded myself to go with good ol' 2D.

3D TV is one of the shortest-lived fads in electronics history.  When was the last time you saw an ad for 3D TV?

I love Iceland, but it has a distinct lack of product availability. I go look for reviews on simple monitors, but those that I find are not available in the online stores here. Tricky...

Yeah, I don't think 3D is a fad anymore than HD was, or Blu-Ray. Sure early adoption rates were low... but in time...

The difference between HD and Blu-Ray is that one of them is now forced on you when you buy a TV. Amazingly enough, there are plenty of people out there with HDTVs that don't have HD inputs going into them. The same will eventually be true with 3D. Except HD is awesome and 3D is stupid, so you won't eventually have every channel available in 3D and people will just shove those glasses in the same drawer as the factory TV remote.

I want to go to there.

Oh... you meant stereoscopic 3D with glasses required. Yeah, that shit won't last. I think in the middle term you will see some glasses-less autostereoscopic solutions getting market share, but in the longer term holographic 3D is the only way to go.

You sound like you're from a time period when VR hadn't already been tried and deemed stupid. HD is demonstrably better than SD (even though some people refuse to admit there's a difference). 3D is different, but not necessarily better. When the 3D market crashes and burns it's going to be a long hard slog to get any company to even consider anything radically different like that.

I want to go to there.

I assumed most new TVs coming out was 3D nowadays?

Really?  You assumed that?  LED TVs aren't even the standard yet.  When I was buying a TV earlier this month, the 47" LCD was about $700. LED cost $200 more, and 3D was another $400 on top of that.  So, almost double.  I don't think they're selling a lot of them at those prices, especially since there's nothing to watch.  Remember that the reason HDTV took so long to catch on was the chicken-and-egg dilemma that the broadcasters didn't want to shoot in HD when nobody had sets to view it, and consumers didn't want to shell out for a set when there was nothing to watch.  3D has that same problem, with the added hurdle of being stupid.

My TV is flaking out and I recently looked at sets and most of the higher end ones are 3D, and they're not higher end because it's 3D. For example, if I wanted at 50"+ TV that was 1080p with a decent number of inputs, good luck finding one that's not 3D. There's were one or two when I was looking, but something was there that I didn't like.

It's one part of the 3d/smart/led array package that's geing used to justify higher end prices now. Granted Sony and Samsung have appeared to notice 3d isn't a selling point and have pushed it down to a bullet point feature to focus on apps (both companies high ranges include it but you'd not notice unless your looking). Vizio is confuseing though, they have one high end smart tv with no 3d that costs as much as the 3d bundle while also selling the 3d set (that has all of the same features and specs as the highend smart) sans box and glasses for less then the high end.

HD isn't that awesome. Sure, the picture is sharper, but it's not the same kind of huge jump that colour was over black and white. I've a Full-HD TV but I don't have my cable company's HDTV package. That's partly because the actual selection of HD channels that they have is a bit paltry and partly because I don't feel any pressing need to upgrade. I don't even have a Bluray player. I do have my 360 connected up with the HD component cables though, and when I rent movies off the internet I tend to go for the HD versions because, why not?

3D is a fad - I'm not even convinced that it's going to last much longer in cinemas. It amuses me that the stated reasons for (re-)introducing it - to undermine piracy - is itself undermined by the fact that you can buy 3D TVs.

I played TDU2 in anaglyph 3D with shitty paper glasses, and it was fun for a while. 3D makes more sense in games than in movies (in regards to production costs at least), but I still can't see it becoming anywhere near popular until we have a cheap technology that works for multiple people in the room without glasses (e.g. holographic projection).

Also, anaglyph > shutter. Fuck you, nVidia.

HD isn't that awesome. Sure, the picture is sharper

We went from having 480 lines of interlaced visual content to 1,080 non-interlaced. Wah wah it could be better, but it's a nice step up.

but it's not the same kind of huge jump that colour was over black and white

The move to color wasn't the same kind of huge jump that talkies were over silent movies. Silent movies over still photos. DVD over VHS. VHS over reel-to-reel. Computers over typewriters.

It may not be a massive leap forward, but it's still a pretty good jump from where we were.

Because it's demonstrably better. Whether or not you personally think it's enough better to shell out more for the content is kind of irrelevant.

3D is a fad - I'm not even convinced that it's going to last much longer in cinemas.

I'm not so sure about that. It's $9.50 for me to see a plain old 2D movie at my local theater. It's $15 if I want to see one in 3D. They can lose more than 30% of their audience share and still make more money on it than they would with a 2D movie playing on the same screen.

It amuses me that the stated reasons for (re-)introducing it - to undermine piracy - is itself undermined by the fact that you can buy 3D TVs.

Wait, they used that as an excuse for reintroducing it? How could that possibly cut back on piracy if there's always a 2D version of the movie playing in the theater two doors over?

I want to go to there.

All of those were huge leaps though. My argument is that SD to HD TV wasn't the same huge leap.

Jibble:

It's not irrelevant to me since I'm the one that would have to pay the premium to my cable provider for HD content. I'm not arguing that HD doesn't look better than SD: I agree that it does and as I said, given the choice I'll go for the HD experience when I rent stuff off the web or play my 360.

Jibble:
Wait, they used that as an excuse for reintroducing it? How could that possibly cut back on piracy if there's always a 2D version of the movie playing in the theater two doors over?

That's the stated reason that I've seen. I think the studios were banking on enough people preferring the 3D version to make the 2D version uneconomical for theaters to bother showing.

I think SD to HD was a huge leap and took too damn long to make. I won't watch anything in SD anymore no matter how good it is. Hell, I watched the US soccer game in spanish because it was the HD channel.

SD content is not great on an HD tv. On an old school tv, it's not so bad.

That said, HD is a huge step up.

SD looks better on my HDTV than on my brother's which is three or four years old but a lot more expensive.  I think they've gotten better at interpolating.  SD sports was almost unwatchable on his TV.

I'd liked playing WoW in 3D at a friends house. Although I also liked playing it in 2D but at 120Hz, so, I'm not sure where exactly my preference lie. Feels like games can handle 3D better than movies.

I like G-Man's dream of holographic 3D though, that's what we need to look back in twenty years and shake our heads at the lack of depth.

The move from SD to HD only improves things (and if it doesn't help it doesn't hurt) whereas 3D leaves many people with a headache.

What you see nowadays though is that a lot of TV broadcasts have HDTV in mind. Ticker text or other text content is unreadable on an SD TV on a lot of channels.
