Minecraft - This game needs its own thread!
September 29th 2010, 09:42 CEST by G-Man It seems like everybody with a PC and a pulse is currently playing Minecraft. And for good reason too - the game is nothing less than a revelation. Who knew that such a simple suite of world-building tools and a procedurally generated universe could be the source of nearly endless entertainment? Like digital LEGO, the game sets players free to build to their hearts content, limited only by their own patience (or madness) and willingness to see a project through. Now you don't have to be left out of the block-shaped insanity. Gabe has set up an official Planetcrap Minecraft server for our enjoyment. Just enter port 5000 of his vanity domain as the IP address in the multiplayer mode to connect with the server and start building something awesome! |

Same for me. "One part disembowels me while another slowly eats its way through the gas line. As I bleed out on the floor, it reminds me that I need to buy milk." - Jibble

The screenshots I've seen have really turned me off bad, but in game and in motion the graphics have a certain Lego-like aesthetic that forms a non-repulsive whole. Once I tried it, it became apparent that the blockiness is the game, it's not much of a problem. That's not to say you need to play it, I'm not all that drawn in myself. I'm just saying there's plenty to harp on other than the graphics, least you could do is get inventive with your complaints. |
You cannot destroy blocks within the spawn area (or even build there I think, too) Zep-- w0rd up!
My main complaint isn't incentive. After playing all this time I still want tooltips. |
I've played enough that I don't even notice the missing tooltips anymore. |
Which is the version we're supposed to get? What are the differences between the free and not free versions? |
I bought the game, downloaded the app, logged in, clicked multiplayer and entered the details. I assume you have to buy it. |
register on minecraft.net (the name you register with with be your in game name, btw) Buy the game while logged into your minecraft.net account. Wait a bit. minutes to hours (mine took minutes a few months ago when I got access to the download page) The one you want to download is: Minecraft Alpha [The latest!]: When you lauch the game it will ask you to log in with your minecraft username and password (from when you registered and bought the game above). Then you can click either single player or Multiplayer (enter server details for MP) Zep-- w0rd up!

The craze around the game reminds of that ST: Next Generation episode where Riker brings an addictive game that turns you into a zombie aboard the Enterprise and it is up to Wesley Crusher and Ashley Judd to save the crew. |

Also, re-skin your guys, n00bs. The Skindex Download a skin from there, log into minecraft.net, goto your Preferences page, and upload the skin you downloaded from The Skindex. Zep-- w0rd up!

G-Man, so you're saying I should buy and start playing Minecraft so I can get Ashley Judd to save me? I'm in! "programmers talk from a very deep gnome cavern, full of gold mechanics" - wisdom from the ancients

I briefly logged in (thanks gabe!) last night. Some impressive buildings already. It did take a minute or two to "sync up" so to speak. After a few minutes mining wood and punching a chicken, the connection flaked out and I was booted. I had to do some work then so didn't jump back in but the fact that there's a server there is awesome. |

I just generated a crazy new world. My spawn point was surrounded by sheer cliff faces rising up past the clouds. Waterfalls cascaded down the cliffs. Coal was everywhere. I climbed to the top and could see forever. I took over a small cave in the cliff side for my home and marked it with a couple of torches, then went out for more wood and coal. As night fell I tried to find my way back home but I was lost. Then I saw a single point of light down in the valley below the cliffs. I had to investigate. I made it there without running into any monsters and saw there was a small hole in the ground leading to a lava-filled cavern. A zombie attacked and I had to kill him with my wooden pick and eat raw pork chops to heal up. I found what appeared to be stairs leading down near the lava hole and I went in, but it was a dead end. Good enough place to spend the night. I walled it up and put down torches and began digging, trying to break through to the lava cavern. After just a few broken blocks I instead broke through the ceiling of a dungeon with a skeleton spawner. I closed it off quickly before the skeletons' aim improved, but I'll be back and I may bring some of that lava with me. BUYBUYBUY

Wudi has built something crazy. I also enjoyed G-Man's name in lights. |

Speaking of Minecraft, this. OMG. According to one-man Minecraft wonder-king Notch, he’s currently selling a Minecraft account every three seconds. Which in itself is about the greatest “that’ll show you, creators of identical, soulless brown-grey games about shooting soldiers” I can imagine, but on top of that it means he’s earning $13.30 a second. Or $15,000 an hour, Texyt calculate. Or, $300- 350,000 a day. A day. A day. A day. A day. A day. A day. A day. Quick calculation of lifetime earnings, based on the number of purchasers listed here: he’s earned $3,554,638 from Minecraft to date. But add $13.30 a second to that. Haha, no, that wasn't me. Just the El Grande bridge & my house, um the Tree experiment, the strip mine, community chest...some bit of road I don't know who built that sky bridge to nowhere. I was kinda disappointed after hopping up the damn thing and it led to nothing. Zep-- w0rd up!

Swedish taxes will take about 50% or so of that, after his (probably minor) expenses. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
That math is wrong, too. It's 10 Euros per game, about $13, so that's $13 every 3 seconds, not every second. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

In the morning I tunneled one block away from my makeshift door and immediately a creeper jumped down from above. Good thing the other block was still there. I was able to use a tree branch to slowly beat him to death. I dug out the other block and took one step out and there was a spider right above me. But the area I was in was only one block wide and the spider couldn't fit, so I was able to slowly beat him to death too. Except in the middle of that another damn creeper jumped down and I had to backpedal and place a block down and then beat him to death over it. Then the spider, then I emerged. Arrows and feathers everywhere. Are other monsters more likely to spawn in the vicinity of a spawner? I've never seen so many monster remains in one place. I was able to find the landmark under which I had built my original cave and I was home again. While excavating inside my mountain home I found a long mazelike cavern that I am scared to explore too deeply. But I must. There's iron down there, and once I have iron then I can make a bucket and me and my lava can go revisit the spawner. BUYBUYBUY

I interrupt this minecraft discussion to comment on the Gothic 4 demo - WTF was that? That's ain't gothic, JoWood! Well, other then the being buggy part. Ok, go back to building things. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" - "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

I made a better signpost for my hovel, then expanded the roof out a bit. Should be just a little bigger by the time I'm done. |
The server seems surprisingly stable this evening. Looks like someone is attempting to grief, as some of that staircase was destroyed. |
Oh, I made those silly towers-to-the-skies. The signage clearly spells out "experimental" so disappointment is not a valid option! It was my first time Minecraft'ing, what's a dude to do. |
I just need half-step slabs to place to make the climb up easier. And then encase such a tower in glass. Once we exit the testing phase those towers will be grand! |
Spent an hour or so on the MP server (Thanks Gabe). The latency is pretty good considering the jump across the ocean. I found some crazy stuff hanging in the sky. This arch in the distance looks pretty cool too. I liked this flat spot on the top of this mountain, above cloud level. I've started the main door. I realise that I'm going to need a lot of stone though, so I drop down to sea level to start mining. |
I bought the game in work, connected, stole some of Wudi's meat and blocks (since that was the first building I found), crossed his bridge and the game crashed. This will definitely be helpful in the middle of project deadlines. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.
Also, Owen, something's wrong with your vhosts or DNS or redirects, owenbutler.org doesn't work at all, only blog.~ does. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.

#38 by Milan Brezovský Also, Owen, something's wrong with your vhosts or DNS or redirects, owenbutler.org doesn't work at all, only blog.~ does. Yeah, sucks. www was hosted at a really old VPS that a few of us chipped in years ago for. The guy who had been footing the bill for the last few years shut it down the other day because he thought no-one was using it, which is kind of true really. I have other hosting, just need to move it across. Thanks for the heads up, I actually only noticed today too, and he shut it down a few weeks ago heh. |

Jibble gave me the grand tour last night. Then I started melting down sand to start my place. It is so damn nice not to have to worry about mobs coming for you. |
You can do that in singleplayer too. Just turn the difficulty to peaceful. BUYBUYBUY

I like that they mostly come out at night. Adds a frisson of danger. "One part disembowels me while another slowly eats its way through the gas line. As I bleed out on the floor, it reminds me that I need to buy milk." - Jibble

Seems you can't die from falling on the server too, which is great given my hovel/grand palace is on the top of a giant cliff. |
I admit it, I destroyed part of the sky bridge. And I would've destroyed more if it weren't for you meddling kids! |
Found Milan's corpse near the bridge, took back my blocks and meat, then kicked his corpse into the ocean. Zep-- w0rd up!
VANDAL! Greg also tried to smother me with gravel blocks. Zep-- w0rd up!
I noticed he also appeared to have messed with someone's hovel. Glass entrance, couple of torches, I think it's TreeFrog's. Had a bunch of gravel near the entrance. I noticed someone had built a little skydeck up there, not sure whose that was. You people need to learn to start making signs and putting them on everything. I have a bit of redstone hanging around in my inventory. If anyone's interested in a compass just let me know. |
#46 by Wudi Greg also tried to smother me with gravel blocks. To be fair, that is a perfectly reasonable and rational reaction to your presence. |
I know this isn't Minecraft, sorry... Hey Bob, Gabe says you're playing PocketFrogs. I love that game. Add me? I'm carynv. I looked for you as BobJustBob on their game network but didn't see you. Anyone else here playing it? |
I never signed up for an account but I will. I'm pretty addicted to it. BUYBUYBUY
Yeah, I only signed up for an account after I played it long enough to decide I wanted to start trading/gifting frogs. |
I stole sand from whoever built that tiny hut next to the spawn point. So sorry, I'll replace it one day. I think I'll stick to MP from now on. What I like about it is I can play from three different machines and don't have to worry about saves. Hell, I'll probably install it at work. |
#52 by jjohnsen I stole sand from whoever built that tiny hut next to the spawn point. You stole sand? What kind of lazy monster are you? Oh, wait. You stole it from Wudi. Nevermind. I think I'll stick to MP from now on. What I like about it is I can play from three different machines and don't have to worry about saves. Hell, I'll probably install it at work. It's pretty great knowing that I'm going to log in and see some new stuff on a fairly consistent basis. It also gives things a sense of permanence, though I guess that depends heavily on how good Gabe's backup process is. |
Bob, is there a guideline for selling frogs? I tend to want to collect everything and resisted selling at first, but since you can only have so many I'm guessing that the way you're "supposed" to play is that you grow and sell off the common frogs and breed successively rarer frogs to keep leveling up? So I've been doing a lot of quick breed-grow-sell stuff with the level 1-3 frogs (I'm only level 4 right now). |
Jibble, to be fair, Wudi is doing some pretty cool things on the server. |
Also, backup process? HAHAHA! |
I figured. And yes, Wudi is an oddly productive member of our Minecraft community. I have two things I want to do right now. One of them requires a lot more redstone than I currently have. The other will just require a little time and effort. Guess we'll see which wins. |
I can summon items, so let me know what you need. No guarantee I'll do it. |
Bob, is there a guideline for selling frogs? Not really. You don't have to worry about keeping frogs around except when you need specific colors or styles to get awards, since you can always find more frogs in the pond and you can buy frogs at a discount from Frogmart when you need money. I need to clear out higher-level frogs from my catalog since they're so overpriced that I never buy them. I think I need to catalog the primary and secondary colors with some level 1 or 2 frogs so I always have them available for cheap. BUYBUYBUY
