So McBain and I have a dollar bet set up, aka The Trading Places Bet, for the wild card round. We both picked the Colts (-3) over the Jets and the Ravens (-3) over the Chiefs, so where we differ is I picked the Saints (-10.5) over the Seahawks and Packers (+2.5) over the Eagles.

What say you?

I said earlier, and I don't think the spread changes that. The Seahawk one gave me pause, but i'd still go Saints.

Seahawks literally have nothing to lose. If they get blown out, people will be all, I told you so. Seahawks continue their rebuilding and hopefully come back better next year. If the Saints lose...there will be shitstorm from every sports media known to man.

Reports are surfacing Harbaugh has signed a 5 year deal with the 49ers.

Well...this should be interesting at the very least.

So that's why Luck stayed in for another year - to give Harbaugh a chance to tank a season and guarantee he gets him.

Shadarr, there was a reason I called it the Kotite award and not the Singultary award.

It should hardly count in his favour that Singletary was too bad to ever get another head coaching job.  He probably won't even get a coordinators job.  My bet is he leaves the NFL entirely.

Whoa, didn't see that coming.  Last I heard was the Dolphins offered him $8 million a year.  I wonder what happened.

Still, something to be optimistic about for once.  I saw a show about the Harbaugh family, every single one of them was raised to be a coach.

I think the .5 in the 10.5 is the key... for some reason I just picture the Seahawks taking it from a 17 point deficit to a 10 point deficit in garbage time.

Garbage time is what ruins point spread gambling.  :-)

Regarding the Packers-Eagles... I just don't understand why people think the Packers are as good as they are...  They were in a horrifically bad division.  I don't think the Bears are "for real", they beat up on a lot of really horrible teams.  Also the Packers have had some pretty terrible injuries.  There is a good reason they only made the playoffs by the skin of their teeth, even if they played the Pats tough.

Also, I hate the Packers with the fire of a thousand suns.

On other topics...

I was reading the Football Outsiders FAQ, which is oddly hilarious (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/info/FAQ).  Highlights include:

Q: Why is Football Outsiders biased in favor of the New England Patriots?

-

Q: Are there any rules for the discussion threads? Do you guys moderate at all? Are any topics off-limits?

...Please limit political commentary as much as possible, as it tends to dominate any thread in which it's started. (The exception is any thread about Gregg Easterbrook's TMQ, where political discussion is unavoidable.)...

...One good guideline: If you feel the need to describe any NFL player as the black ___, don't.

-

Q: Who is Catholic Match Girl?
A: Catholic Match Girl is the girl from an advertisement that the Catholic Match online dating service bought on the site in September and October of 2006. She lovingly stared at our readers for weeks, and they became quite fixated on her.

-

Q: Who's better, Peyton Manning or Tom Brady?
A: It is official Football Outsiders policy that the answer to this question is "Bob Sanders." Arguments about Brady and Manning tend to take over any discussion when either one is mentioned, so we've actually created a special thread reserved solely for insane Brady/Manning arguments. Seriously, if you start comparing the two, don't be surprised if your comments are deleted.

Interesting Football Outsiders tidbit:

"Teams with more offensive penalties generally lose more games, but there is no correlation between defensive penalties and losses:

"Defensive penalties often represent strong defensive play that goes just over the line between legal and illegal. As long as penalties are only called every so often, this kind of close play leads to successful defense."

The Seahawks are a weird team, sometimes they look legit and other times you wonder how they ever won a game.  I doubt they can knock off the Falcons though, they're a lot more consistent than the Saints.

Obviously I'm disappointed, but I also didn't have SB hopes for the Colts this year. Too much to overcome. Glad it was an exciting game, though. All the injuries really depleted the special teams, because those are the guys that get moved to regular duty, and poor special teams play at the end was ultimately the downfall for the Colts.

I'm just glad that roughing the kicker call didn't decide the game. I genuinely felt bad for that guy. Good job, NBC, showing him like every 5 seconds after that call, even after that play was over and everyone else had moved on.

Yeah, lots of good football this weekend. LOVED watching the Seahawks pull of a win, especially after hearing what an abysmal team they are and how they had no chance all week long. To be fair, they do suck with then they lose. And I'm extremely hesitant to say they have a chance against the Bears... Still, love of fun, and that run Lynch had...wow. What do the kids say these days? Oh yes, Lynch ran like a boss!

KC feel apart like I thought they might. I was pretty sad to see Manning and the Colts lose, but I'm with Gabe in that I didn't expect them to make it very far. They aren't the Colts of years past this year. Too many injuries and not enough cohesion. The Packers defense handled Vick and his team pretty damn well. Not just get by well, but damn well.

Of all the teams that played this weekend, I'd say the Packers look the best if they can keep their running game going. They look to have the best chance to pull off the upset in the next round to me.

Great football weekend...and only a few more of the left!~11!

For all the bitching that it was unfair that Seattle got to host a home game, the road team won 3 of the 4 contests. Go NFC West!

Also, I saw a tidbit on ESPN that since 2005, the NFC West has the best winning percentage in the playoffs. Seattle and Arizona both making the Super Bowl in that timeframe helps.

Quick tidbit on Harbaugh:

In the slew of interviews Harbaugh and general manager Trent Baalke conducted, the most revealing was on KNBR with Tom Tolbert and Ralph Barbieri. When Tolbert has new football coaches on, he asks them what they do if they were faced with this situation: You're on defense, there's a minute left, the score is tied, you have no time-outs, and the opposition is deep in your red zone. When Tolbert outlined this situation to Harbaugh, he immediately said, "let them score." In fact, Harbaugh even has a defensive call for that circumstance, which he called "highway." The thought is to allow the opposition to score so you can get the ball back.

Tolbert said when he puts this scenario to coaches, they either have never thought of it, or they say allowing a team to score under any circumstance is against their philosophy. Harbaugh has not only thought of this situation, he has a defense designed for it, and he's not foolishly wedded to a stop-the-offense-at-all-times theology.

Let them score, get the ball back with a minute to go, give it to Alex Smith, throw an interception, take a knee, game over.

:)

Sorry, couldn't resist.

If Harbaugh sticks with Alex Smith, I'll be pretty damn surprised...and wonder if that kid sleeps with the owner's wife or something. I'm all for second and third chances, but fifth and sixth chances when you've proven you're mediocre at best? I don't know...

I highly doubt Alex Smith will be back.  He's not under contract and the team has made no effort to sign him to an extension, which they have done with most of their young stars.  It sends a pretty clear message.

I liked the game better when it was 35-10.  The Seahawks didn't belong in the game and they looked like it.  The Bears were practically fair-catching their own punts ferchrissake.

I hope it's Steelers-Packers, just because Cowboys fans hate those two franchises, and I'd love to see one of then hoist the trophy in Jerry Jones's sandbox right on the center of that big ass star. If the Steelers pull it off, they'd be sick for weeks.
