ESPN is also reporting the league is going to fine Favre... They really came through in a timely manner on that on!

Eggbert needs ~14 from each of his 4 players to beat m0nty. It's possible, though improbable. Each of them has indeed scored over 14 on multiple occasions, but not all on the same day (IIRC, I checked this out last night).

I know this isn't timely but...the dream is dead. Roddy White is the only one that did anything and that was only in the first half. Damn you beardless Aussie, couldn't catch you on a "Aaron Rodgers is out, and you score 36 points" week huh. I have no choice now but to say Utah Utah Utah! Oi Oi Oi!

I am still playing for third, which I think would be my highest placing in the league so far. At least it would make my draft position next year slightly different for once, though maybe not in a good way.

I was in the past two finals and was in good position for a 3rd this year until everyone shit a brick. Late draft position FTW!

Unless Steven Jackson has a -20 night tonight, I should win the championship in my OTHER fantasy league. Arian Foster is a BEAST. Still, I'd trade it for winning this league. Maybe next year.

God, Jim Mora is an idiot.  Talking about how Alex Smith never really got a chance to show what he could do because of having different coordinators and different coaches and whatnot, and how the fans were "quick to boo".  It's because he should've been cut outright two fucking years ago.  The Cardinals are just terrible though.  How did they win five games?

How is it you have Arian Foster and Steven Jackson and you're in a championship game?  Those guys couldn't even win me a single playoff game.

The ESPN league I'm in (it was set up by Dethstryk) does this weird thing where the playoffs are the last four weeks. Only 4 teams get in, and those four match up bu seeds, and then scoring is handled via a two-week total score. They add your scores from weeks 14 and 15 to see who advances to the final, and weeks 16 and 17 are for the championships. Good thing, too, because last week I was facing an 18 point deficit. This week, I got 31 points from Arian Foster alone to not only make up the deficit, but also give me a 20 point cushion going into the final game. I have 215 points total for weeks 16 and 17, with a half still yet to play. I'm not a fan of the two week thing, myself.

Just something to take into account when drafting or scouring the waiver wire - picking backups who would likely do something in the final weeks of the season, as if you have a good starter who's likely on a good playoff team they'll likely not play as much near the end.

Thoughts as 49ers name Baalke GM

January, 4, 2011 Comments By Mike Sando

Thoughts after the San Francisco 49ers promoted Trent Baalke to general manager:

Team president Jed York said he wanted to consider as many candidates as possible. He wound up interviewing four guys out of the NFL -- Tony Softli, Mike Lombardi, Ted Sundquist and Rick Mueller -- and one in his own building. Baalke might be the right guy. The 49ers would know best; they've watched him work in a GM-type role for nine months. But York is not setting any trends here. This was not, by all appearances, an exhaustive search. That reflects well on Baalke, but not on the 49ers' ability to attract hot candidates.

Fans clamoring for a seasoned NFL power broker to take control of the team will be disappointed. Baalke appears to be a strong scout, just like his predecessor, Scot McCloughan. Is he suited to oversee a football operation? Again, the 49ers would know better than outsiders, but it's looking like top personnel people around the league were not lining up outside 49ers headquarters for a chance to speak with York. They could have known Baalke was going to get the job all along, or they could have had no interest, or a combination of these and other factors.

Quite a few reporters I respect have suggested hiring Baalke could clear the way for the 49ers to land Stanford's Jim Harbaugh as their head coach. I do not know why this would be true, unless hiring a lower-profile GM clears the way to offer more power for Harbaugh. Still, if I'm a hot coaching candidate -- and Harbaugh seems to be one -- why rush into the 49ers' arms?

The 49ers have not yet done anything to seriously disrupt their power structure. That could change if they arm a coach with control over football operations. For now, though, it's looking like York and Paraag Marathe, the team's executive vice president of football and business operations, carry on as before. That means the 49ers are basically blaming former coach Mike Singletary for their troubles, confident that replacing him will fix what ails them.

The 49ers might be right on that last point, provided they also find a decent quarterback. We'll have a much fuller picture once the team hires a head coach and enunciates its plan.

York could have rushed Baalke into the role when McCloughan resigned unexpectedly before the 2010 draft. Waiting until after the season was the right thing to do. The 49ers bought time to consider what structure they wanted.

Hiring Baalke basically puts the lie to all of York's bullshit about an exhaustive search for an experienced GM.  What have they done to improve the organization?  Nothing.  This is the same group of idiots who haven't put together a winning season in the better part of a decade.  Good organizations promote from within because they have good people to promote.  Organizations that are as dysfunctional as the Niners need to hire somebody from a winning team to hopefully bring some of that ability with him.

I haven't been unhappy with what I've seen of Baalke, he certainly had a good draft his first time out and they've been pretty good for a while at extending contracts on the players who need to be extended.  However, I highly doubt he's the guy to kick York and Marathe out of the war room and tell them to get the damn stadium deal done and keep their noses out of the football side.  For that you need someone like Parcells, who did the same thing to Jerry Jones.  Who is supposed to find us a great new coach?  The same guys who hired Erickson, Nolan and finally Singletary (who is quite possibly the worst head coach in the modern NFL)?  Forgive me if I'm not excited.

I'm kind of excited...that the 'fins might get Jim Harbaugh. Not that I know if he'll be a great coach or anything, but I'm pretty sure he'll get rid of Henne and get a real QB. Maybe he'll move up and draft Luck! /me keeps smoking the dream pipe.

So McBain and I have a dollar bet set up, aka The Trading Places Bet, for the wild card round. We both picked the Colts (-3) over the Jets and the Ravens (-3) over the Chiefs, so where we differ is I picked the Saints (-10.5) over the Seahawks and Packers (+2.5) over the Eagles.

What say you?

Shadarr, there was a reason I called it the Kotite award and not the Singultary award.

It should hardly count in his favour that Singletary was too bad to ever get another head coaching job.  He probably won't even get a coordinators job.  My bet is he leaves the NFL entirely.

Whoa, didn't see that coming.  Last I heard was the Dolphins offered him $8 million a year.  I wonder what happened.

Still, something to be optimistic about for once.  I saw a show about the Harbaugh family, every single one of them was raised to be a coach.

I think the .5 in the 10.5 is the key... for some reason I just picture the Seahawks taking it from a 17 point deficit to a 10 point deficit in garbage time.

Garbage time is what ruins point spread gambling.  :-)

Regarding the Packers-Eagles... I just don't understand why people think the Packers are as good as they are...  They were in a horrifically bad division.  I don't think the Bears are "for real", they beat up on a lot of really horrible teams.  Also the Packers have had some pretty terrible injuries.  There is a good reason they only made the playoffs by the skin of their teeth, even if they played the Pats tough.

Also, I hate the Packers with the fire of a thousand suns.

On other topics...

I was reading the Football Outsiders FAQ, which is oddly hilarious (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/info/FAQ).  Highlights include:

Q: Why is Football Outsiders biased in favor of the New England Patriots?

-

Q: Are there any rules for the discussion threads? Do you guys moderate at all? Are any topics off-limits?

...Please limit political commentary as much as possible, as it tends to dominate any thread in which it's started. (The exception is any thread about Gregg Easterbrook's TMQ, where political discussion is unavoidable.)...

...One good guideline: If you feel the need to describe any NFL player as the black ___, don't.

-

Q: Who is Catholic Match Girl?
A: Catholic Match Girl is the girl from an advertisement that the Catholic Match online dating service bought on the site in September and October of 2006. She lovingly stared at our readers for weeks, and they became quite fixated on her.

-

Q: Who's better, Peyton Manning or Tom Brady?
A: It is official Football Outsiders policy that the answer to this question is "Bob Sanders." Arguments about Brady and Manning tend to take over any discussion when either one is mentioned, so we've actually created a special thread reserved solely for insane Brady/Manning arguments. Seriously, if you start comparing the two, don't be surprised if your comments are deleted.

Interesting Football Outsiders tidbit:

"Teams with more offensive penalties generally lose more games, but there is no correlation between defensive penalties and losses:

"Defensive penalties often represent strong defensive play that goes just over the line between legal and illegal. As long as penalties are only called every so often, this kind of close play leads to successful defense."

Obviously I'm disappointed, but I also didn't have SB hopes for the Colts this year. Too much to overcome. Glad it was an exciting game, though. All the injuries really depleted the special teams, because those are the guys that get moved to regular duty, and poor special teams play at the end was ultimately the downfall for the Colts.
