Google Wave turns pubic hair straight.
November 11th 2009, 17:00 CET by Penguinx

Well. I'm in. When do I start sprouting chest hair like a minotaur? Is my unicorn in the mail?

Maybe I need more Wavees in order to grok it. Post names to wave usernames here, I guess.

So far, Google Wave Google sucks.

It was obviously the iPhone comment I was referring to. I'm a Mac snob remember!

Sure, Wildfire is half the price and performance of good Android smartphones; and I still like Android as such and the immediate availability of free apps like a PDF reader, last.fm, SSH client, Frozen Bubble, Dolphin browser, etc.

However, there is a long, long list of things I cause me to flip the fuck out, which I'll limit to those that I have on BlackBerry out of box:
 - immediate, accurate and effective copy&paste almost everywhere.
 - inbox with all messages together
 - NOT having to scroll to see 4 menu items at once
 - NOT having to wonder which apps are still running and which have gone to mixed sleep-and-shut-down-eventually mode
 - being able to fucking write. Hardware keyboard = love.
 - being able to have more than THREE PROFILES (sound, no sound, vibrate), like pre-defined "Calls only", "rather quiet" or "very loud"
 - being able to add own profiles
 - BEING ABLE TO FUCKING USE ANY FUCKING MP3 THAT I HAVE ON MY FUCKING 16GB SD AS A FUCKING RINGTONE, SRSLY WTF IN YEAR 2010.

And some minor points
 - sorting icons
 - BBM
 - sweaty fingers don't make me push random buttons by accident (by failed gestures)
 - seriously, and I though BB trackball is bad.

But at least the Kindle app is of some use.

meh

- inbox with all messages together

I have no idea what you mean, gmail works just like it should

- NOT having to scroll to see 4 menu items at once

I also don't know what you mean by this - sounds like a limitation of the screen you have

- NOT having to wonder which apps are still running and which have gone to mixed sleep-and-shut-down-eventually mode

That's your fault for not running Froyo. Or buying a phone that can't run it. But you need to get out of the mind set that it matters, because it doesn't. Programs are always in sleep mode unless they are in the front. They use no memory or processor clocks unless they are doing something.

- being able to fucking write. Hardware keyboard = love.

Again, that's your fault. I don't miss a keyboard, but their are plenty of android phones with them.

- being able to have more than THREE PROFILES (sound, no sound, vibrate), like pre-defined "Calls only", "rather quiet" or "very loud"

I believe you can actually do this; it may be only in Froyo though.

- being able to add own profiles

I have no idea what you mean by this.

- BEING ABLE TO FUCKING USE ANY FUCKING MP3 THAT I HAVE ON MY FUCKING 16GB SD AS A FUCKING RINGTONE, SRSLY WTF IN YEAR 2010.

Learn how to use your phone, dumbass. You can totally do this, you just need to make the right folder on your storage card for it. Use the google.

And some minor points

 - sorting icons

it's drag and drop, I dunno how much more sorting you need to do.

- BBM

???

- sweaty fingers don't make me push random buttons by accident (by failed gestures)

 - seriously, and I though BB trackball is bad.

I think you seriously picked the wrong phone for you.

But at least the Kindle app is of some use.

Yes, it is. Especially on a 4.3 inch screen.

Lp I think he means blackberry mesaging by that bbm thing. So basically he was bitching his phone lacks the group SMS rim is pushing as the blackberrys major unique feature.

OK

First, there isn't FroYo out yet for me.
Second, this is a company phone.
Third, it does matter, as
  a) I can't just alt-tab to app I intentionally left running
  b) while I understand that design decision to make apps go sleep is a tradeoff, as any other design/architecture decision, but that doesn't mean I have to like having apps getting restarted just because I haven't used them in 5 minutes.

- being able to fucking write. Hardware keyboard = love.

Again, that's your fault. I don't miss a keyboard, but their are plenty of android phones with them.

Wait, so having the need to type is my fault? Again, company phone. Company = word. Work = replying to emails. But seriously, what good is phone that makes typing even a single fucking URL a major pain in the ass? 75% of apps don't turn sideways, which is much more pleasant for typing.

- being able to add own profiles

I have no idea what you mean by this.

I mean, being able to define my own profile with custom ringtones, volume levels, vibrations, etc.

If I have to google it, or put it in a special folder, it's... just dumb. It's the same argument Apple users use to laugh at PC - why would they need to google a solution to a common problem? I mean, it's not rocket science. Right click -> use as ringtone. BB can do it, anyone can do it.

And some minor points

 - sorting icons

it's drag and drop, I dunno how much more sorting you need to do.

I'm not that dumb. I can have eight icons on my home screen. I cannot sort or group icons in All Programs.

- BBM

???

Don't listen to None-1a. It's just a free IM that Just Works. Also, did I mention free? (With BB Internet Service, of course.) I don't give a shit about group chats, though.

- sweaty fingers don't make me push random buttons by accident (by failed gestures)

 - seriously, and I though BB trackball is bad.

I think you seriously picked the wrong phone for you.

I sure as hell wouldn't buy it. But seriously, I could use stylus just fine in the olden days, it was much more accurate (although I understand its limitations).

But at least the Kindle app is of some use.

Yes, it is. Especially on a 4.3 inch screen.

It's better than nothing. Just about right for brief reads while commuting.

Lp I think he means blackberry mesaging by that bbm thing. So basically he was bitching his phone lacks the group SMS rim is pushing as the blackberrys major unique feature.

Also. Do you think I'm retarded? Wait, no, don't answer that. Whatever.

I was bitching only about things I use. Daily. I have people I talk to. And no, I can't call them. First, they're all over the world, so finding the right time is complicated, second, they're all over the world, so it's kinda expensive to call. And since I don't sit in front of the PC all the time, and since BB keyboard is very comfortable to use, it feels just normal to use IM to contact them.

I don't need to give a fuck about what RIM's marketing says to enjoy and use BBM. Yes, I can use MSN or gTalk or Y!IM or AIM or ICQ, but they aren't optimised for spotty connectivity (read: metro). There is seriously a major difference in usability of BBM and other IMs on phone; as I said, BBM just works. It's fast, it's optimized for bandwidth, it's reliable.

i don't know that you HAVE to google the answer, it may very well be in your manual. But you can certainly google it.

As to the rest of your complaints...well, then your company chose the wrong phone for you. But it does sound a bit like are suffering from New User Syndrome, which is really a problem for former BB users, because smart phones and BB phones really are designed radically different.

and as for reading, like I said, my Evo has a 4.3 inch screen. I currently am reading the new 1000 page Brandon Sanderson novel on it. I mean, my screen is only a little smaller then a kindle screen, so...I read for hours on that think. I love it.

Yeah I'm doing the iPhone thing as well, and it works aight. My girlfriend has a Kindle and it is clearly the superior reading device, but for the amount of reading I do the iPhone seems just fine. I wouldn't mind an iPad-like device for reading but the Kindle is too narrow in its focus for me (and the current iPad is too expensive, bulky and boring to consider for purchase).

because the kindle doesn't fit in my pocket, so it won't end up going everywhere I go like my phone does.

I could see getting a kindle just for reading at home. But I don't just read at home.

Thanks to Kindle for Android, Gunp01nt and TreeFrog, I'm halfway through Snow Crash. It's fabulous.

Yes, it seems to be NUS. I don't like the phone much, but at least I don't hate it all the time.

The hand sweating is however still annoying. Even on laptop - I enabled Windows logon with fingerprint sweep, and I can't get it right most of the time.
