Valve keeps milking zombies
November 11th 2009, 17:00 CET by Milan Brezovský Set for release on November 17, the title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaw, frying pan, axe, baseball bat, and more. Introducing the AI Director 2.0, L4D's dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players' performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played. Featuring new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original with more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, and maps for Survival mode available at launch. So, let's interview the resident Valve employee on the chainsaw details. |

You keep raging against the machine, gags. BUYBUYBUY
Indeed |
I waited until the big sale to buy the first game and will probably do the same for the second. |
I played the demo on X360 and liked it enough to rent it from GameFly. They made a lot of incremental changes for the better. |
gaggle (#6): It was, and is, a $15 game. L4D2 sounds the same as the first time: Good for a laugh, 4 hours later it's completed and out of juice. $15 is probably a tad too high even. Yeah, I got the first one as a present, so I couldn't really complain the value...but I had no intention of paying full price for it. Nor will I for the second jjohnsen (#9): I waited until the big sale to buy the first game and will probably do the same for the second. this. I'm going to do the lame thing and do a "me too!" post. #9 Me too. Now I feel dirty and will proceed to wash my eyes with soap. Parhelic Triangle is coming.
I think my reactions have atrophied too far for online FPS. I'm not even any use in TF2. So yeah, not giving much of a shit about this one. Torchlight! "Don't try to take cover by the legs of my walker. It will not go well for you." - Shadarr

I'll be picking this up, assuming I can wrangle a non censored version somehow. I've seen footage of the \"Australian\" version and it's not pretty. |
Actually, the censored version seems more less confusing. Although it also seems much less like a survival horror game. Parhelic Triangle is coming.
Yeah it could make it easier I guess, less view obstructions. Interesting pickle we have in Australia regarding censorship. Our current problems all seem to stem from very old laws introduced when the country was just getting started. Back when the states of Australia were being formed they introduced a process where a representative from each state had a say in importation and customs. All states had to agree to make changes to customs policy, the states were probably fearful of federal control and didn't want to lose power. Fast forward to current times, ratings/classifications for films/games are still controlled by importation/customs, they picked it up as we probably imported most of our film/content before creating our own. The process of all the states having to unanimously agree for changes in policy is still in place, and the South Australian representative is a small minded conservative prick. We can basically never have an R18+ rating while he is around, as he will always block it. Most sensible people agree that we need an R rating, but we can't do anything. The government could probably stir things up and remove the power from the state representatives, but it's probably a lot of work and there's no real benefit, only risk as the opposition would smear them for it (as they would smear them for doing anything) and the states might kick up a fuss. Crap! |

I preordered L4D2. I love L4D. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" - "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

I rally liked the single player version, which is why I would gladly pay $20 for LFD2. I can't justify full price when I am only using half the game. |
I play versus mode every Thursday with my friends. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" - "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

Hmm, this is the least successful of the new threads. Next week is pretty crazy. Assassin's Creed 2, Left 4 Dead 2, New Super Mario Brothers Wii (which I was uninterested in until I watched this), Lego Indy 2... uh... Tony Hawk Ride... "CS is still one of the best, and fun, tactical FPS multiplayer games out there." -- Perkins
Tony Hawk Ride will be a spectacular failure. I, for one, applaud this. |
Lego Indy 2 is a sure win as a Christmas present for my kids. |
AC2, NSMBwii, MW2, so many games so little time. Also WoW 3.3 is coming out soon. We can finally kill Arthas. Fucker needs to die after pulling that Scooby Doo bullshit while levelling from 70-80. Not to mention the story stuff stretching back to WC3. |
I finished my first playthrough of Borderlands (with Siren). Second playthrough, so far, seems even better fun than the first one. Will now proceed to look at some of the six games I got today with a gaming magazine. Icewind Dale II? Don't mind if I do! Parhelic Triangle is coming.

Heh. L4D2 was released, and it isn't even in top 10 bestselling chart on Steam. I know it will get there, but what a shame! Parhelic Triangle is coming.
I've heard a lot of sentiment similar to what I feel about LFD. What happened to all of the promises for the original? Instead we get to buy a whole new box? Meh... "Fucking Radio Shack. Heh. L4D2 was released, and it isn't even in top 10 bestselling chart on Steam. I know it will get there, but what a shame! They must have taken the preorder out of the list then, because it has been there ever since it was available to preorder. Matt Perkins I've heard a lot of sentiment similar to what I feel about LFD. What happened to all of the promises for the original? Instead we get to buy a whole new box? Meh... What are these promises, and why would you, who is known for not caring for the original, care? DLC? They've had DLC. Support? They've had continued support. What are these promises? "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" - "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

For some reason, I still felt tempted to buy it today. Just for walking around the single player and surviving. Surviving the apocalypse would make me feel good, I guess. To Valve's credit, it's only 35 EUR. I mean, most games went from $50 to 50 EUR (~30% increase) when Steam switched the currency for us, some getting to 60 EUR ($89) like MW2. So L4D2 is "only" $52, which is nice. Parhelic Triangle is coming.

What Matt is referring to, I assume, is the general whining around the globe (i.e. Steam on facebook and Steam fora). People assume that just because Team Fortress 2 costs next to nothing and has updated with new content and achievements regularly for over 2 years, they would do the same for L4D1. After all, L4D2 IS the fastest new flagship game release from Valve lately. Parhelic Triangle is coming.

Is there a LFD2 PC demo? |
Jamie Is there a LFD2 PC demo? Yes. Milan Brezovský What Matt is referring to, I assume, is the general whining around the globe (i.e. Steam on facebook and Steam fora). People assume that just because Team Fortress 2 costs next to nothing and has updated with new content and achievements regularly for over 2 years, they would do the same for L4D1. After all, L4D2 IS the fastest new flagship game release from Valve lately. They added Survival Mode and Crash Course, and made all levels Versus Mode capable. They released the SDK and their are some fine user made levels out there. I don't see them updating it less then TF2. And lets be honest, every time they update TF2, someone bitches about it. #31 by Milan Brezovský After all, L4D2 IS the fastest new flagship game release from Valve lately. The only thing I got from that timeline link is that they released Portal over 2 years ago and there hasn't been anything new released since then in the Portal vein. That sucks. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
I'm guessing they're holding on to whatever new Portal stuff they've got to release it along with Ep3 and maybe something else (Counter-Strike 2?) in the next Orange Box like product. |
I don't think we'll see another orange box. Orange box put valve back on the map. They don't need to give that much shit away again. Also, valve are cunts. Right Caryn? |
I <3 Valve, even if they don't want Caryn in The Jets. As for what I was talking about earlier...yeah, they put massive effort, changes and great design over the long haul in TF2 (the Orange Box essentially). They didn't really near that amount with LFD. Now, they are trying a quick sequel, which is almost unheard for Valve, to see how that money stream works I'm guessing. I hope it goes great for them, but I don't think I'll be buying LFD2 at full price. "Fucking Radio Shack. It's a wonder they even know how to use a bathroom and don't just walk around all day with shit in their pants." - smds

It took TF2 a while to have the content it has now. The initial product didn't release with all that many maps or modes, on it's own. Comparing it as part of the Orange Box package strikes me as unfair. I have no problem not paying full price for it. I picked up the first L4D when it was half off. I've been playing it since then, too. To say it hasn't been supported as much as TF2 at this point in it's lifecycle is just wrong. Now, sure, but TF2 has been out a lot longer. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" - "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

The main problem I have with L4D is that I don't find it to be very much fun to play. |
I think I once heard this one guy talk about something called Episode 3. Dunno what happened to him. Ballooning accident, I think. Or wolverines. "Don't try to take cover by the legs of my walker. It will not go well for you." - Shadarr

I found myself rather pleased with the latest episode of Stargate Universe. That is all. |
Matt, how is that iPhone app development coming along? I've just noticed that Flash CS5 will have a native support for building iPhone/iPod Touch applications, so I'm getting curious about jumping on the ever-growing app building ship. Parhelic Triangle is coming.

V, on the other hand, seems like complete and utter trite shite. Good lord. |

Milan Brezovský (#51): Matt, how is that iPhone app development coming along? I've just noticed that Flash CS5 will have a native support for building iPhone/iPod Touch applications, so I'm getting curious about jumping on the ever-growing app building ship. That's pretty cool shit. I haven't done much with it since I found I needed I mac. I never bothered to take the hardware plunge or try to make my intel box run the Mac OS. Basically, I didn't care enough to continue at that point. :P "Fucking Radio Shack. gaggle (#52): V, on the other hand, seems like complete and utter trite shite. Good lord. Huh...because I'm liking it a bit. I've only seen two eps, but it's been interesting enough. Yeah, I don't care enough to buy a Mac (although I could get myself to finding "trial" versions of Mac OS and virtual machine), but with developing inside Flash Pro / Flash Builder / with Flex SDK would cut that annoyance away. I'm afraid that once CS5 is released, Flash developers will flood the app store, and the market will just become much tougher, especially if top Flash game developers begin publishing their already finished, polished games. At the same time, that is what I absolutely love about Flash 10.1 - one application, all platforms. Browsers (win/mac/linux), smartphones (WM, iPhone, Symbian, BlackBerry OS). Bam, all development platforms I find interesting. Parhelic Triangle is coming.
Ugh. But everything is so cheesy! I can't overcome it. To me it feels like 2nd rate drama. What would you say is the part of V you find most interesting? Like, do you feel for the priest's cause? I thought it incredibly boring and lazy how he just saw a bloodied man die in pain in his church and all he did was go turn in an envelope. Surprise!, he hooks up with our try-hard mom. Who lets herself be cut in the line of duty by a crazy man that for some reason isn't being laughed out of the warehouse by his crazy conspiracy theory. It just feels so… cheesy! Everyone are empty shells being puppeteered around in service of a bland alien story. I can feel how the actors are pretending to be caricatures of people: There's the career-minded journalist, the try-hard mom, the naive son, the conspiracy-guy-who-has-it-all-figured-out, etc. There's no particularly clever dialogue, nor do we get close enough to the people to make them stand out much. Even the aliens are like us, with remote controls and see-through televisions, there's no interesting take on this alien society. And c'mon, those FBI agents don't feel like they're part of a big bureau do they? It feels more like they run around doing what a script writer thinks FBI agents do. I'd point to Flash Forward as an example of how to pull off a much stronger characterization of that line of work. Maybe the characters are simple because the story is so broad, but do you feel the story is interesting enough to stand on its own? So the aliens have been here for a long time and are the cause of all our real-world problems and now they're here to fuck us up good, with only FBI-mom, Priestboy, Crazy-Conspiracy-Guy and the V-opposition to stand between us and certain doom. Oh I wonder if they'll make it??? I can't shake the feeling it's a 2nd tier show retelling an already told story. It actually feels a lot like Stargate Atlantis or some of the recent Stargate movies. Everything feels like actors running around in service of a story that's not really that interesting. To me it's a sharp contrast to shows like Generation Kill, Daybreak, Dexter and others that all have these detailed characters and settings as well as unpredictable stories. I'm not saying those shows have universal appeal, but I am saying they offer far more nuanced characters and higher quality stories. Or what, do you just watch V to turn off your brain? Empty hollow entertainment? I don't mean that to sound condescending, turning off my brain is one of my favorite pastimes :) |
