5 Years of Movies In Your Life
July 22nd 2008, 16:30 CEST by Hugin

Just a little exercise. Pick movies from five years in your life, and categorize them.

Start with the year you were born. End with '07, since '08 isn't finished yet. Take three years in between, roughly evenly spaced (I mean, you could get precise about it or you could just pick three arbitrary years, so long as you get decent spacing between them).

For those five years, go here, scroll down the links on the left side and check the release list for that year. Then pick three movies.

1. The one you think (of the movies listed at least), is historically or academically or culturally the most important or valuable, or aflat quality judgment.

2. Your personal favorite, most fun, guilty pleasure, etc, regardless of importance or quality

3. One you didn't know existed and find interesting, or keep meaning to see but haven't yet, etc.

This is going to sound really sarcastic (like most everything I say) but is there much work for wingwalkers in Hollywood? It's kind of a niche.

Concurred. Wingwalking is a niche but that does not illiminate my aircraft from working as a prop or an aerobatic craft or even just something making noise in the background. While wingwalking is what I do , I can also sell myself as a transfer artist, a stunt guy hanging precariously from an airplane in flight or whatever.

Hilary Swank is hot.

Very cool, wing.

On another subject (hey, let's make this the photography thread), this is kind of cool. She took apart common household appliances and arranged their innards on white bristol board. Interesting perspective.

Well....only two more gigs to finish and then I hope that I will have more time to visit with you guys and gal. I really miss you crazy peeps.

Hilary Swank is very beautiful and she was always smiling. Funny you should mention helmet cams, I'm trying to get a company to sponsor me one. I think it would make for some interesting footage.

I got paid enough to keep my team running for another season and I'm pretty happy with that.

I'm slowly adding the ones I've read since I started keeping track on my blog. I just copy/paste a few in at a time, including reviews and dates read. Plus all the new stuff I'm reading. I doubt I'll ever go back and try to remember all the stuff I read before that.

Also, this morning after coming back from my weekly trip to the library with my 4-year old daughter I also created a goodreads.com profile for her. I'm going to add the books we check out from the library each week just for fun. Also, it allows me to pad out my friends list a bit.

I'm thinking of creating one for my daughter just too make it easier to remember what she's read.  So when I start telling her about this great series I read as a kid I don't have to get her withering look as she tells me she already read that way back in second grade (a whole 8 weeks ago).

And I add written reviews for the stuff I'm currently reading, but just star the books I've read in the past and can remember how much I liked them.

Bellydance stuff:

Video of my third performance ever. I made a couple of mistakes but hey, I'm still new at this public performance thing. I'm performing here with my troupe leader and instructor.

My standard note: this is all improv, we didn't choreograph this, except for two things: (1) we agreed we wanted to go into the audience halfway through the last song and bring up dancers; (2) we wanted to do the "drop" in the second song. Other than that, all of the moves in this dance are done on the fly. The person who's in the lead at that moment -- which is whoever is in the frontmost position when we're facing the audience -- cues a move and the followers (in this case only one follower since there's only two of us dancing at this event) have to follow it. When we're facing each other there's no leader and it's anyone's game -- either one of us can cue a move or a change in position at any time. It's what makes this style of dance so much fun, you really have to be on your toes.

Caryn,

that was nice... but in the future, you really need to loosen up a bit more. unless it's a very strict formation with a couple of other bellydancers, going a bit crazy with it is always a plus.

anecdotal evidence: there's this semi-arabian girl I know who does - and teaches - bellydancing without anything even resembling an actual belly. she's about a hundred and ten pounds at most (I kid you not), doesn't even look astonishingly good* - but the way she captivates the audience with just her freeform moves is just uncanny.

*I'm trying to hunt down actual photos, but that might take a while

Well, actually, it IS a strict formation. Since it's improv dance based around a library of moves, you can't go too crazy or the other dancers won't know what you're about to do. But that said, the more experienced dancers can do formations and changes that look probably less student-like than mine.

s02e01 was excellent. The addition of Shirley Manson is much appreciated... she's not the greatest actress in the world but all she's required to do for the most part is be a Bond villain, and that's within her scope. Plus that Scottish brogue! The speed of the plot is what I really like about this show, there are big reveals and reversals within every ep, and the body count is satisfyingly high. The final scene is particularly enjoyable.

Tides me over nicely until new Heroes!

Another thing I like a lot about SCC is the mix between emo and macho. The action scenes are shot with a lot of reaction closeups, with what seems like a lot more of the original actors in the action rather than a series like Buffy, where the fight scenes have a lot more stunt people. Maybe that's unfair, but I have been watching Buffy s06 reruns lately so I have a point of reference. Also it helps a lot to shoot the fights on location rather than a sound stage.

The emo is very important, nonetheless. There are a lot of meaningful looks exchanged, especially between mother and son, but it hasn't been cliched as yet (though it gets close). The occasional bits where John rebels against his mother are very pleasing in a rite-of-passage sense... hardly unconventional, but powerful in the context of the wider universe.

Also, whoever plays the rebel loner in the new 90210 can only hope to have a life like Brian Austin Green has had, punching that quality of kitty into his mid-30s. Lucky bastard.
