Stuff about video games and violence. But the data did show a link between playing mature-rated games and aggressive behavior. The researchers found that 51 percent of boys who played M-rated games -- the industry's equivalent of an R-rated movie, meaning suitable for ages 17 and up -- had been in a fight in the past year, compared to 28 percent of non-M-rated gamers. The pattern was even stronger among girls, with 40 percent of those who played M-rated games having been in a fight in the past year, compared to just 14 percent for non-M players. One of the most surprising things was how popular mature games were among girls. In fact, the "Grand Theft Auto" crime action series was the second-most played game behind "The Sims", a sort of virtual dollhouse. Kutner and Olson said further study is needed because the data shows only a correlation, not causation. It is unclear whether the games trigger aggression or if aggressive children are drawn to more violent games. Or if the kids aren't aggressive at all but rather get beaten up a lot. "If you have, for example, a girl who plays 15 hours a week of exclusively violent video games, I'd be very concerned because it's very unusual," Kutner said. "But for boys (the danger sign) is not playing video games at all, because it looks like for this generation, video games are a measure of social competence for boys." Boys who don't play games are weird, girls who do are weird. It's science! How old are the kids in this story? Here's a theory: Underage kids whose parents allow them to play M-rated games, or who don't even know their underage kids are playing M-rated games, have more structural elements in their family life and or attitudes towards violence or proper behavior, that those kids are more likely to get into fights. David Archuletta came home today!!!! OH my gosh, you should have seen it. My sister's neighborhood was blocked off by tons of cops, and when he drove to Murray High for the appearance, he drove by in a Bronco limo and waved to us...he shouted, "HI CHRIS!" Chris is my brother-in-law. We had helicopters, and planes flying around the city with huge banners flying behind them that welcomed him home. Yep, life in Utah is boring...but David is our home boy, and over 20,000 people showed up at Murray High for his homecoming! We certainly aren't proud of any religious bullshit that goes on here, so when someone makes it BIG, we are extremely proud of him!!!! |

I totally forgot I posted here and the discussion has moved on but I don't really care, so, yes, I can make a compelling argument that Kobe was not the MVP. There are four basic ways to judge an MVP that people roll out whenever the discussion gets going, and Kobe fails at all four of them this year. 1. Best Overall Stats - That'd be Mr. LeBron James, who was significantly superior to Kobe in nearly every way this year. The argument can also be made that Chris Paul's stats were better, although it's a slightly harder argument to make than James because you have to start weighing the value of assists and steals vs. points and rebounds. Either way, James dominates this category. 2. Best Player on the Best Team - That'd be someone on the Celtics, although frankly none of them were the MVP either. Then it'd be someone on the Pistons. Kobe's team was third in the standings this year, so he's the third-best player if you vote by this reasoning. 3. Player who if you removed him, the team would be hurt the most - Chris Paul or LeBron James were both dramatically more important to their success of their team than Kobe was this year. Arguably so was Garnett only because his presence convinced them they could actually, you know ... not suck. Now, in 2006 Kobe totally *decimated* this category (and also category 1), which is why he should've been the MVP then. Without Kobe, even with an all-star in his place, there is no way in hell the 2006 Lakers would've made the playoffs, let alone nearly upset the Suns in the first round. 4. Player who, after he showed up, the team suddenly turned around and became a force - This is why Steve Nash won his first MVP, and if you went by this reasoning you'd certainly choose Garnett this year. My preference for Paul was pretty well summed up by ESPN's John Hollinger several weeks ago: "He's almost drawn even in PER [with James], he hasn't missed any games, his team is in first in the West [note: the Hornets ended up one game behind LA], and he saved basketball in New Orleans. What more do you want?" -- basically for me it's a healthy dose of categories 1 and 3 compounded by the fact that Paul's having the best statistical season for any point guard since Magic Johnson (Kobe's season, by comparison, is not even the best he's had in the past few years). There's also the fifth category: "not a fucking rapist" but that's just a personal category that helps sway my vote away from Kobe. Basically, the journalists gave it to him this year because a) he should've won it in 2006 but everyone gave it to Nash because he's white and b) everyone's amazed that his current teammates actually like him. -chris |
