All you wankers who don't like sports better vote this topic through, otherwise there will be a sportspocalypse in every other thread on the front page.  Also, I will be voting no.

Yeah no outsiders. I'd rather see the league downsized than play with somebody I don't hate.

I'd rather give Gaggle a team than have an anonymous outsider. No offense against your buddy, Matt, but it's just not the same beating/losing to MasterToker49 than it is when it's someone we hate, like m0nty.

Put me down as a maybe. I'll even up the teams if it's an odd number. Honestly I don't know if I'll have the time to properly follow it. Actually that's not true, I would probably make time for it, the problem is I don't know if I should make time for it.

Ah hell, bump me up to "tentative yes". That's an orange on the fantasy terror watch.

Didn't I replace someone the first time? Funkdrunk right? We should probably ask him in case he's available this year.

Goddamn, eggbert, you're more wishy washy about this years football league than gaggle is about, well, most everything. Man up and say "yes, I'll do it!" Don't pussy foot around it. I've never seen someone that calls themselves a Texan act so girly about football.

So far we have yot, lwf, Shadarr, McBain, jjohnsen, m0nty, Perkins, Cheesy, and eggbert in. Nothing from Gabe yet, and chris just wants to be emergency fill-in. If Gabe doesn't return, we can either stay at 10 teams or look for 1 more and have chris fill in for #12. If Gabe does come back, we look for 1 more and if we can't get another we have chris fill in.

And I agree, Funkdrunk should be at the top of the list if he wants to come back.

SJ Mercury News columnist weighs in on the current Niner QB controversy:

Until last nights final 49ers-Raiders practice session in Napa, I didnt know what to do with the prospect of J.T. OSullivan as true competition for Alex Smith and Shaun Hill for the starting QB spot. Come on really? I should take OSullivan seriously? It has to be Smith (because of the money) first, Hill (because hes Mike Nolans guy) second doesnt it? But after that pass-intensive session, with OSullivan, Smith and Hill basically alternating two snaps then two snaps then two snaps or three/three/three against the Raiders DBs and LBs, I had to admit to myself, and now to blog world:

OSullivan might really win this job. If you removed all biases and past experience, if you took away salaries and considered strictly as Nolan might be considering itwho gives the 49ers the best shot to win immediatelyit might be 1) OSullivan; 2) Smith; 3) Hill.

* Smith has the most natural talent, as displayed by several laser-shot out-patterns (two for TDs in red zone action), but makes the most grievious mistakes and looks the clunkiest when things arent going smoothly.

* Hill gets rid of the ball quickest, which is very important in Martzs offense, but you do not want to see him throw it beyond 20 yards and he rarely does.

* OSullivan has the loud personality and command of the offense and has more of an arm than Hill, but rarely makes the kind of eye-popping throw that Smith can occasionally peel off.

So? I cant believe Im saying it, but, given the parameters of this competitionpolitical, personal and otherwiseI believe OSullivan might have a 45% chance to start Game 1. Id right now give Smith 35% and Hill 20%. THATS PENDING PRESEASON ACTION, OF COURSE. But unless Hill sizzles in the exhibitions, I think it should come down to OSullivan and Smithwith Hill as the designated No. 2 behind either one because Hill is the guy most likely to keep mentally in it if hes the back-up and most capable of winning games later in the season if hes not anointed No. 1 right away.

And I think that, even if OSullivan looks sharper now, as long as its close, Smith should win this summer derby and start Week 1 because the odds are that he will pick up the offense at some point and when he does, hell be far and away the best QB. It should be Smith, for at least the first four weeks of the season, then see if he deserves to keep the job. That might not help Nolans own job securityespecially if Smith struggles against the early schedule (@Seattle Week 2, @New Orleans Week 4). But its whats best for the franchise; if you pass on Smith for Week 1, thats really making The Decision on Smith.

If you pick OSullivan, youre saying Smiths not the guy and probably never will be. After all that hope, hype and cash spent. Are the 49ers really ready to say that in the midst of such a tight competition? J.T. OSullivan as the 49ers starting QB has to be CARVED IN STONEonce you go to him, theres probably no going back to Smith. And nobody should be ready to carve that in stone as of yet and maybe not for a few months.

All of that could and will change dramatically after the preseason opener Friday against these same Raiders, but we have no idea how. Nolan and Martz wont even say whos starting the game and what the rotation will be. And I know Im writing this after Peter King just speculated that Hill (my No. 3 guy) is the most likely starting choice for the 49ers. But Peter hasnt watched practiced, that I know of. I just did.

Oh well. As Ive argued for months now, I think there are three agendas at work here, all logical:

-Nolan likes gritty, quiet leader Hill because Hill basically saved Nolans job last year and made Smith seem like a dubious starter;

-Martz likes OSullivan, because Martz loves to show the rest of the NFL what he can do with their reject QBs;

-GM Scot McCloughan likes Smith because McCloughan always likes the most talented guy and somebody has to watch out for salary-cap consequences.

I think theyre all stuck right now. Theres no clear-cut choice and its very possible that at the end of three exhibitions (since nobody wants this to come down to the fourth and final exhibition), there still wont be a clear-cut choice. Simply: None of the three are good enough for true separation.

I think Nolan will want to award all ties to Hill. I think a huge determining factor will be Martzhow hard does he push OSullivan? Does he think he can get more traction and credit by fixing Smith or creating OSullivan? Does he risk his reputationand his head-coaching futureon JTO? I think it will end up as a basic two-way tie, and Smith will win that coin flip. Theres too much at stake to toss him aside now over a slight preference, unless Martz really decides the team has to move him out.

It has to be Smith, unless he totally flops in the preseason, with OSullivan and Hill ready to go if he flounders by early October.

I'm actually pulling for JTO to make it, partly because he's a fellow UCD Aggie, but also because I'd love to see another "QB comes out of nowhere and does very well" storyline. Though I doubt that even that happening would overpower the Favre nonsense.

Favre and Martz are about as incompatible as two people can be.  It would be awesome to see them tarnish each other's legacies but I don't want them doing it in SF.

Favre does not want to go to the Bucs. Gruden and him may be friends, but Gruden's system is overly complicated, he's a big liar and he's going to into a situation where we already have an established QB.

On the plus side, I've got an opportunity to buy tickets if Favre comes here, so I could see him play with any luck.

They're getting old, especially Ray Lewis.  And they've been losing players to free agency.  That defense was built with high draft picks, it can't be maintained with low picks.  Nobody can stay good forever.
