GTA:IV-ever
April 28th 2008, 21:28 CEST by CheesyPoof Talk, play, bitch, whatever. The game is getting A+'s and 10/10 all over the place, including the tight wads at EuroGamer. We must also strike while the iron is hot to organize any PC play sessions, 360 only, sorry Bob. And doubly sorry to PC only gamers (sorry Dum). |

I'm about eight hours in and I've done almost nothing but storyline missions, I think I'm at fifty five or so out of a reported ninety. I haven't encountered much in the way of free-form like back in the old days of vice city and gta3, and most of the characters in the game suck, although there have been some funny bits. On the one hand, the 30 hour storyline achievement bothers me. But on the other hand, I think it's a blessing in disguise. Without it, I wouldn't be rushing through the story and ignoring all of the other elements, and I think that I'd be even more upset with the game in that case. The R3 missions are gone, as are their rewards for completion. Getting 150% health and armor and unlocking enough packages to have such spawn at your safehouses was something that became a habit of getting very early on, so that whatever 'difficulty' was present in the story missions became mitigated by simply being able to survive for that much longer. Plus, jumping into a taxi as the first thing was a great way to learn the city and make quick cash. The tapping to run thing... I understand their logic. The trick to the old games was that you could tap the sprint button to run basically forever, until you unlocked the sprint forever ability. It was a work-around that was fairly short lived for me, as paramedic was one of the first things I would do so I would not have to actually tap the damned button all of the time. Translating that into an actual gameplay mechanic might seem like a good idea, and I can see why they would have figured such, but it's just one of many in the list of valid complaints against the game when viewed by today's standards, after crackdown and saints row and even subpar games like just cause. I think the biggest issue with the game is that it's a disappointment on so many levels, varying levels depending on the player, to be sure, but still, a huge let-down nonetheless. When you take that let-down and combine it with the overwhelmingly, ridiculously positive reviews and the seemingly ignorant stance of the raging fanboys when comparing the game to others that have surpassed a lot of the issues still present, it seems like a huge step back and I find myself being a little bit angry as well as disappointed. I guess that's all I have at this point. |

#807 by m0nty Does anyone important give a flying fuck what Tom Chick thinks? Since he's considered by a lot of people to be one of the better game reviewers around, I'd say...yes. Invention is the Green Goblin of Necessary Lemonade.

Hmm, Qt3 is blocked at work. If they ever block PC I may have to quit. It's not a story that was being told to them in cut-scenes from the game designers' point of view." - Will Wright

So, no one important than. |
|
I can't say I agree with Tom Chick on most things RTS, but I really like his writing style. He's often way out there on some games (I still can't think of him without thinking of his Dominions 2 review and saying the UI was like a puzzle to solve and that's a good thing.), but writing coherently and interestingly goes a long way. I mean, I think it does...as soon as I figure out how to do it, I'll let you know. #766 by BobJustBob I picked up the issue of Edge with GTA4 on the cover and it says even if you choose to start Spore in the space phase, you have to undergo a linear series of missions before you're let loose upon the galaxy. There's even a goal and stuff. :( Uh-oh. I have a feeling Bob's about to revoke spore's GOtY trophy. |
|
You mean GotF, and no, not yet. Although also in the Edge preview is a bit that seems to confirm what many people feared, that the individual phases would be half-baked versions of better games. It says during the Civ phase you take over other cities militarily, culturally, or economically. Except that the cultural method is basically just the same as the military method; you still have to build culture "weapons" and "attack" enemy cities with them. "If everybody has a very different story and a very different experience, then it's very personal and they were driving the story by playing the game. It's not a story that was being told to them in cut-scenes from the game designers' point of view." - Will Wright

I still can't think of him without thinking of his Dominions 2 review and saying the UI was like a puzzle to solve and that's a good thing. That's still not as bad as Keiron Gillen. That guy is about the most pretentious game writer ever. Witnesses in the house heard Jones say "why did you pee on me Pooh Bear?" A few moments later, the witness heard the son say "Mama you done stabbed me."
|
|
No, James Wagner Au holds that title. Invention is the Green Goblin of Necessary Lemonade.

Perhaps we should hold a wank-off. Witnesses in the house heard Jones say "why did you pee on me Pooh Bear?" A few moments later, the witness heard the son say "Mama you done stabbed me."
|
|
No, James Wagner Au holds that title. If he pronounces it 'Vahg-ner', then he should win on name alone. (links?) |
|
Neither are anywhere near as pretentious as Russ Pitts off the Escapist. He edits it too, so most of the other writing on there is similarly unreadable. |
|
I dunno. Au would be pretty hard to beat. Invention is the Green Goblin of Necessary Lemonade.

Seriously. Remember when he watched a tower of blocks fall down in Second Life and wrote an article comparing it to 9/11? "If everybody has a very different story and a very different experience, then it's very personal and they were driving the story by playing the game. It's not a story that was being told to them in cut-scenes from the game designers' point of view." - Will Wright

|
You think? Or how about this shite? Starts off coherent, ends up him talking about the fucking Civic he used to drive. He's so far up his own arse he could audition for a fucking polo mint advert. |
|
Pfft. That guy's a pretender compared to Jimbo. Invention is the Green Goblin of Necessary Lemonade.

You really don't know pretentious, crazy land until you start listening to James Wagner Au. (that's a link to my site, which comments on my absolute favorite SL update of his). Fine, if we're linking, here's Kieron's Darwinia wankfest. Witnesses in the house heard Jones say "why did you pee on me Pooh Bear?" A few moments later, the witness heard the son say "Mama you done stabbed me."

Ah, classic Kieron. Did any of you read his comic? - words and stuff -

#827 by Marsh Davies Ah, classic Kieron. Did any of you read his comic? I have the tpb, but haven't got around to reading it yet. Is it any good? |
|
It's very clever, but maybe a little too self-consciously so. In fact, it's clever at the expense of being coherent in places. That said, I liked the characters and concept, and thoroughly enjoyed it as an ode to British bands of the 90s. I have no idea if that last part would make it across the Atlantic though. - words and stuff -

Boom Blox is pretty awesome. "If everybody has a very different story and a very different experience, then it's very personal and they were driving the story by playing the game. It's not a story that was being told to them in cut-scenes from the game designers' point of view." - Will Wright

I tried to reserve Wii Fit yesterday at Gamestop and Toys R Us, and neither is taking reservations anymore. Anyone know someplace that is? |
|
I guess I got in right under the gun. I reserved mine on Monday. "If everybody has a very different story and a very different experience, then it's very personal and they were driving the story by playing the game. It's not a story that was being told to them in cut-scenes from the game designers' point of view." - Will Wright

|
Yeah, they said they stopped taking pre-orders on Tuesday, so I just missed it. |
|
I'd be interested in hearing what people think of Wii Fit. My wife, who is not a gamer, expressed interest in it, but I'm not quite sure about the idea of plunking down that much money for ...a step. Even if it is a fancy one. |
|
I'm buying it because it turns out I'm a huge Nintendo whore. I never knew! "Using [sandbox elements] to play a melody, following a script, diction, or formula if you would, takes this cacophonous system and gives it harmony, and takes random notes and turns them into music." - bago

While Bob goes on about the suck of GTA4, I'll mention this .gif quatoria just showed me. It explains a lot. "the concept that a happy worker is a productive worker is hardly an entry from Matt's Big Book Of Things The Fairies Said." - Dum

How very fitting for him to be immortalized in such a form. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.

WTF, why is imageshack blocked? "If everybody has a very different story and a very different experience, then it's very personal and they were driving the story by playing the game. It's not a story that was being told to them in cut-scenes from the game designers' point of view." - Will Wright

Because you're supposed to be working. Get to work! |

I already did enough work for one day. I deserve the rest of this time as a reward! "If everybody has a very different story and a very different experience, then it's very personal and they were driving the story by playing the game. It's not a story that was being told to them in cut-scenes from the game designers' point of view." - Will Wright

If you have time to lean, you have time to clean. |

Keep that rhyming shit in the other thread! "If everybody has a very different story and a very different experience, then it's very personal and they were driving the story by playing the game. It's not a story that was being told to them in cut-scenes from the game designers' point of view." - Will Wright

Not the funniest .gif I can think of. "Using [sandbox elements] to play a melody, following a script, diction, or formula if you would, takes this cacophonous system and gives it harmony, and takes random notes and turns them into music." - bago

#836 by Jamie I'd be interested in hearing what people think of Wii Fit. My wife, who is not a gamer, expressed interest in it, but I'm not quite sure about the idea of plunking down that much money for ...a step. Even if it is a fancy one. My wife's interested in some variety in exercise, as well as a simple way to keep track of weight loss. |
|
That GIF is way old, Matt. Also I don't really see how it "explains" anything. "If everybody has a very different story and a very different experience, then it's very personal and they were driving the story by playing the game. It's not a story that was being told to them in cut-scenes from the game designers' point of view." - Will Wright

Woo! The second island is now open. I still have odds and end to do in Broker/Bohan though. I didn't have any issues with the mission that unlocks it. Funny enough it was the first mission I did. If I knew I was that close to Algonquin I would have done it last night. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

I downloaded a completed save. So, whoo, third island! I was disappointed that you can't play Teen Wolf in GTA4, but I was kinda surprised about all the car names. |^^^^^^^^^^^^ |||__
