GTA:IV-ever
April 28th 2008, 21:28 CEST by CheesyPoof

Talk, play, bitch, whatever.

The game is getting A+'s and 10/10 all over the place, including the tight wads at EuroGamer.

We must also strike while the iron is hot to organize any PC play sessions, 360 only, sorry Bob. And doubly sorry to PC only gamers (sorry Dum).

According to the tracking #, my copy should be here today. If only this wasn't magical deadline week. This weekend I leave for San Francisco, too, so I'll be lucky to play it at all.

I got my copy at K-Mart a few minutes ago.  No lines or anything.  Pre-ordering is pointless, at least in a big city like Boston with so many places to get games.

Earlier I saw some photos of tons of people waiting in line for the midnight launch. I guess I just don't get it*. Lay down, close eyes, wake up, drive to store, grab game instantly, leave. Christmas morning is fun and all, but I'm not five anymore.

*Yes, I stood in line for the Wii, but I still have yet to see one of those physically sitting on a store shelf.

That video review convinced me. I'll buy it today.

I'm now of the opinion all reviews should be in video form only.

I'm still laughing about an earlier video I was linked to as a "preview". The player walked clumsily around on a bridge, got into a car, drove a few feet, jumped out, slowly walked back to the car, then drove it off the edge of the bridge into the water.

Can't wait to play it, honestly. Let me know if you guys wind up setting aside some scheduled matches online.

I walked into K-Mart on Sunday morning and bought a Wii. It wasn't physically on a shelf, but it was the first time I've seen one physically in a store for sale. And I didn't have to wait in line for it, outside of having to wait for a customer to finish their transaction.

Woo! I have my copy! Boo! I am in the office!

Pre-ordering is pointless, at least in a big city like Boston with so many places to get games.

Not when you trade in your entire PS2 collection and get an extra 20% on the trade in value for pre-ordering GTA IV, which nets you GTA IV, Patapon and still have $3.42 left over.

Christmas morning is fun and all, but I'm not five anymore.

Oh, you will be. You will be. And we're all going to hear about it.

It's pretty awesome that all Hugin's talk of, "I'll get GTA when it's in a setting I like, like a Sci-Fi one in the ME universe" that the video review broke him down and he got it. Woo!

Yes, I caved.  It should be noted that I stated I wasn't going to buy Halo 3 and that held up.  Also I'm already stuck in GTA 4 and annoyed with the game.

WTF, out of all the great stuff I post you pick that to quote?

I went at 12:30 to Future Shop and picked up a copy.  No lines, lots of copies, took about 15 minutes including driving time.  Across the parking lot there was an EB with people lined up outside the door.  Who knows how long they stood in the cold?  Certainly a hell of a lot longer than it would've taken them to walk over to Future Shop and buy a copy.  Pre-ordering something like Rock Band or the Wii that is supply constrained, sure.  But a game that they expect to sell millions of copies and have printed millions of copies?  Why would you do that?  They can't all have traded in their PS2 libraries.

I was stuck on the early Albanian loan shark/basketball court mission.  I got through it on the 6th or so try.  I'm not loving the driving thus far.

Yeah, I don't like being forced to drive the cousin's cab all the damn time.  It handles like a rubber boat.  I had enough trouble controlling the other cars I stole that at least could make a corner going over 35.

I hope everyone's playing on their 360.  There are reports popping up on Joystiq of data corruption on the PS3 version, and the solution is to delete your saved games and start fresh.

#98 by BobJustBob
2008-04-29 22:26:15
Eurogamer said the solution was just to delete the cache data and install again. Also it said it only affected launch systems.

I don't know why I'm so envious of you guys playing GTA IV, as I still haven't finished San Andreas, for which I was just as excited as for IV. It's always the same! First, it's "must have! must have!" five minutes later it's "next! next!". Know what I mean?

The map is impressive, but I'm do know how it translates in game yet. The first island looks to have as many street/roads & game area as the first GTA alone.

Work won't allow me to use anything else. Also it's work's fault; some combination of proxies and firewalls and whatever is causing about 25% of my posts to be dropped. :(

I guess I need to get in the habit again of ctrl-Aing my post every time.

Hah. Brilliant. Get my personal copy of GTA home and my console decides it can't read the disc. And my 360 is out of warranty, because the extended warranty only covers the RRoD. Does it matter that the succession of previous consoles I've owned all failed because of the RRoD and I've actually lost count of which console I'm currently on? No! That'll be the best part of £100 please thank you, and see you again in three weeks.

Also, I suspect that it's a policy that customer service operators exclaim in alarm when you tell them how many consoles you've been through. It conveys empathy and also makes it sound uncommon to have so many recurrent failures.

Alternatively, force your 360 to overheat so it will be covered by warranty. This will probably only help if they completely replace your system, though.

I failed a multi-part mission (grab ganja-man, drive to a place, whack three of his enemies, then drive to a house and shoot some people in the house. I died in the house bit) and had to start the mission over from scratch. Wtf? I gave up and let my friend complete it.

It won't stop me from playing the game, but I think it'll be one of those things where several times through the game I'll quit in absolute disgust, groan in anger and resentment and reconsider why I even bother with fucking shit like this, and then return to the game a week later when I've cooled off a bit.

Unless I'm missing an option to save checkpoints or something??

Okay, my story sucks, so I'll share it anyway. Also I don't want to work.

I picked up GTA4 over lunch and went by the food court. The guy taking my order saw the Gamestop bag and asked what game, so I told him. He mentioned that his wife was in a terrible car crash last year and is almost out of physical therapy. I thought he was going to give me crap for playing the game but then he said "As soon as the lawsuit money comes in, the first things I buy are gonna be a PS3 and GTA4. It's gonna be sweeeeeeeeet."
