GTA:IV-ever
April 28th 2008, 21:28 CEST by CheesyPoof Talk, play, bitch, whatever. The game is getting A+'s and 10/10 all over the place, including the tight wads at EuroGamer. We must also strike while the iron is hot to organize any PC play sessions, 360 only, sorry Bob. And doubly sorry to PC only gamers (sorry Dum). |

If you crapsift you'll see that using a proxy is usually my first suggestion too, but remote desktop solutions are better for the less technically inclined. |
I'm very technically inclined but I couldn't be bothered to set up all that shit. Plus, Linux? Bleh. Invention is the Green Goblin of Necessary Lemonade.

Did I say Linux? I specifically didn't. I'm pretty sure you could do it with a Windows box if you were that way inclined. |
Anyway, it's not that complicated; canned installs of SSHD (which most unix/linux boxes have by default anyway) and squid will work without any additional effort. Plus, I'm not suggesting that you specifically install unix/linux to do this - if you had a box at home for remote shell access anyway then it might be a good idea for getting you around your company's web filtering. |
Assuming you're not worried about getting fired, of course. |
SSHD stands for Super Stardust HD, the PSN game. Find another acronym loonixites. Net security is a pretty important thing here. I'm not sure what I want to try and 'route' around it that might set off alarm bells. The best route around that I can think of is to not access it at work, or iPhone (now that would be ironic). <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

Wow, hooking my TV to the Mac sure was easy. Plugged the cable in, and that was it. Using it with the lid closed right now (and it threw me off for a couple minutes that I had to have the adapter in to use it this way), and it works a treat. Also tried it with the lid open and it seems to work wonderfully for presentations and stuff. Happy times. The wireless Mighty Mouse sucks though. It'll probably, barely, be good enough if I ever get a Mac Mini as a media server, there's not a lot of clicking involved in opening a bunch of files through Finder. But for actual work, even just using Firefox, it's omglaggybad so far. Well it's either lag or OSX's weird attempt at cursor-acceleration, hard to tell. "GUY WHO OUTRANKS YOU: Take Superfly here and reconfooble the energymotron."
Yeah, the wireless MM is a total dog. Also, you are way too high on Apples. |
A leetle. "GUY WHO OUTRANKS YOU: Take Superfly here and reconfooble the energymotron."

Might Mouse sucks, I hate how it feels. Before Apple tv we used to watch movies using that adapter, it wasn't as great on our iBook because of the max resolution, but it would probably look great on my MBP. But have I mentioned I hate Apple right now for taking my laptop away for ten days? |
I finally set up Vista to share movies as well as music and it turns out my PS3 can play almost everything. The stuff I copied off my ReplayTV and off my GB_PVR box, sure, it's all MPEG2, but I could swear I used xvid when I ripped all my Futurama DVDs. Anyway, it's awesome. It even remembers where I left off. |
the PS3 does play most xvid. And yeah, it's a touch better than using the 360 to stream to as far as playback goes, but the folder interface is kind of stupid. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" - "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

Yeah, playing music is a bit of a pain because of the folders. I like to set everything to shuffle or a specific artist to shuffle, but I can only do it by album. What do you need to hook up a MacBook to a TV? My TV had a DVI input (I think), but that doesn't do shit about sound, so I guess I'd need two cables. Sounds annoying. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

I didn't think I'd like the Mighty Mouse, and that I'd go out and buy a new mouse for the new iMac that I got a few weeks ago. But it's not bad, the little nipple is pretty nice, and outside of the fact it doesn't really like the surface of my desk (occasionally will jump to corners), I have no complaints. |
The right clicks don't register as often as I'd like. And the bluetooth one was annoyingly laggy for me. The wired ones at school are much better, but still don't register right clicks 100% of the time. |
lwf is a fucking douchebag. |
I do like the nipple as well. Another annoyance is that I can't quite manage to lift the mouse while holding down a button. Dragging a file somewhere better not be farther away than where the mouse can move to in one swipe. "GUY WHO OUTRANKS YOU: Take Superfly here and reconfooble the energymotron."
i enjoy nipples normally, but the one on the Mighty Mouse doesn't do anything for me. And it seemed to lag a bit. I prefer my logitech. |
I asked once if there was a good application for handling .rar files and such, and it turns out there is. The Unarchiver. It's probably what jj has, it's presents such a minimal user interface that I can't blame him for not remembering which program he was using. "Braid breaks one of my personal most fundamental rules of games design within minutes of starting - they have timed puzzles."
you know, if you spent more time reading what people wrote instead of typing 20 page paragraphs describing your every thought on every thing, you'd have noticed that the Unarchiver was in fact mentioned. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" - "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."
"LP, your big balls are a religion." - Jibble |

If I stop twittering the site dies. Why do you want the site to die LP? It's basically all me and bob these days anyways, and the two of us just don't fight like we once did. S'good point on Unarchiver though, but it didn't show up on Crapsifter so I figured it wasn't mentioned. "Braid breaks one of my personal most fundamental rules of games design within minutes of starting - they have timed puzzles."
Maybe that's what I have. It just opens it, I never actually see any kind of interface, and that's how I like it. |
I'm on Twitter. Frenden. I bought a MacPro. 2TB storage, 10gb of RAM, two quad-core processors (eight cores woo). I bought the bare bones version and upgraded it all third party. Apple's prices for upgrades blow. |
Maaan I wanted to do that. The Mac Pro is badass, I couldn't even justify the price of the barebones though. |
I had to get it. My iMac was old and not keeping up with the file sizes I worked with any longer. Plus, it was fried during a storm. Time Machine had me up and running on the new machine in about an hour with no data loss. |
Jesus. Apple completely rapes you, price-wise. Even their "bare-bones" model is ridiculously overpriced. Invention is the Green Goblin of Necessary Lemonade.

Agreed, but I didn't want an unstable hackintosh and I refuse to use Vista. I have 64bit apps in my workflow and the only thing worse than 32bit Windows is 64bit Windows. |
Vista x64 isn't bad, liar! I use it on a quad-core PC with 8 gb of memory. And you're going to be crying like some little bitch koala who fell out of a tree and then his claws fell off when CS4 is released with a Windows 64 bit version but no Mac OS 64 bit version! |
I like Vista a lot. Vista is great. |
I would if I used Photoshop. Photoshop is a big, steaming pile of bloated shit. |
#2879 by Ergo Jesus. Apple completely rapes you, price-wise. Even their "bare-bones" model is ridiculously overpriced. How so? How mudh does a Dell quad-core x2, 2TB machine cost? I've always been told Apple sells their RAM at a high price so there's reason to just buy some ordinary sticks and do that part yourself, but other than that is Apple all that expensive compared to the hardware you're getting? "Blizzard could easily appease the color-hostile fans by adding a graphics option that reduces chroma by 90% and brightness by 50%. And maybe changes all spoken text to goth poetry."
Apple's prices aren't really that much more than PCs, IMO, the problem is just that they have such a small selection of systems that there are gaping holes in their offerings. Like the Mac Pro is more system than almost anyone needs for a desktop right now, but the iMac is too weak and there's nothing in between. |
I would pay twice as much. NEVER AGAIN, WINDOWS. NEVER AGAIN. |
I agree with that, Nutty. iMacs are great systems for the average worker/home though. I do need a MacPro, so I wasn't alienated by the lack of middleground. |
One more thing about Windows: Vista + Cintiq = drawing through Jello. OS X + Cintiq = as close to drawing on paper with digital tools as we have at the moment. |
#2885 Hence the unkillable xMac rumors at Ars, AppleInsider, etc. If we can hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate!
#2886 by Penguinx I would pay twice as much. NEVER AGAIN, WINDOWS. NEVER AGAIN. I love my Macbook. I surprised myself by not even bothering with Bootcamp, fuck it, I get enough Windows at work. "Blizzard could easily appease the color-hostile fans by adding a graphics option that reduces chroma by 90% and brightness by 50%. And maybe changes all spoken text to goth poetry."
I'd love to see the Mac Mini as a sort of middle-ground, stationary computer but small formfactor. No screen but a little more power than the iMacs. I don't believe that'll happen mind you, but I can still dream. "Blizzard could easily appease the color-hostile fans by adding a graphics option that reduces chroma by 90% and brightness by 50%. And maybe changes all spoken text to goth poetry."
Well there are tons of rumors that Apple's going to release a sub-$1000 notebook soon, so maybe they'll introduce an affordable mid-range desktop as well. I'd be really surprised if they don't make some moves to get into the slightly lower end markets at this point, given the OMG WORLD IS OVER economic situation. |
Isn't that what the iMacs are for? I remember those getting some household marketshare before 9/11 and the dotcom bust when money was no object for anybody. "Wow I didn't expect it to be good. I mean no offense, but you're a bald headed punk rocker in bifocals and Genghis Khan mustache and the band sounds like Benny Goodman on crosstops with Alvin from the chipmunks on vocals..... I'll take one"
iMacs are your average dad-needs-to-check-email, and Mac Pros are überomgwtf CPU monsters. Apple don't currently do anything that's just sort of a duo or quad ordinary CPU and a good graphicscard, and I don't know if they ever will. If they make a move for games it might happen, but enh... It's not a terrible crime imo, I'll rather leave hardcore games to the 360 anyway (or if it has to be PC I play at the office). "Blizzard could easily appease the color-hostile fans by adding a graphics option that reduces chroma by 90% and brightness by 50%. And maybe changes all spoken text to goth poetry."
The MacPro is ridiculous. I love it. Never stutters no matter how many renders I have going, no matter if iTunes is running while I work, my mail app, my twitter app, my IM app... Holy multitask. |
gaggle Apple don't currently do anything that's just sort of a duo or quad ordinary CPU and a good graphicscard, and I don't know if they ever will. Apple has a leg up on most windows boxes on those systems actaully. The two 'mid-range' iMacs come with 2.66-2.8ghz core 2 duo's and a Radeon HD 2600 PRO, where as Dell's XPS One has similar specs (and price) but only a Mobility HD 2400 avalible. The only falure the iMac has as a mid-range product is that it uses a built in monitor which bloats the price compared to a mid-range windows box that's usualy sold with out a monitor or with a lowest cost 17 inch lcd they could find. The one product Apple's line truely lacks is a high end desktop system not a mid-range. Remember the Mac Pro is not a desktop system, it's a workstation/server. Don't forget garnishes such as: Fish shaped solid waste.

I don't think I mention this often enough but I absolutely love my Macbook. Love it. I'm like gaggle - I was pretty certain that Bootcamp was 'when' and not 'if' but so far I haven't come across anything that would make me want to run Windows on it. Actually, that's not strictly true - I have a few games on steam that I'd like to be able to play (I now run Linux on my old desktop machine so I've no Windows boxes in the house at all) so I sometimes consider installing XP on the MB. But then I remember that the video card in the Macbook is pretty pathetic so I figure there's no point because I'll just get pissed off with the poor fidelity. |
I Bootcamped my Macbook Pro in order to play a few games, since gaming for OSX is pathetic. Runs HL2 like a champ. Invention is the Green Goblin of Necessary Lemonade.

OSX is useful for me when it comes to torrenting and writing papers. No word processor I've tried on OSX does everything the same as word for windows. |
other than word for mac. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" - "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."
