The Raven ones weren't too good. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

The series got progressively worse with each sequel, but it's nearly impossible to appreciate the earlier games if you didn't play them at the time. That said, I miss playing JK2 multiplayer. And the huge levels of JK1. |

JK1 was great. Only Star Wars game where I played the dark side path as well as the light side. Never finished JK2 though. It just didn't grab me. So I turned 30 today. I don't know how I should feel. Feels weird. The protruding upper halves of the letters now appear, in the local language, to read “Go stick your head in a pig”, and are no longer illuminated, except at times of special celebration.

I've had this odd feeling that I've been plugging it in constantly, and sure enough now that I look at the estimated time remaining it says an hour and a half. And that's basically from a full charge?! Any hints on what I'm doing wrong? I've just disabled Bluetooth and dimmed the screen and keyboard backlight to minimum, so maybe that'll help a little. I guess I could shut down Airport as well but that's a tad extreme. I should be expecting more like four hours right? And that's basically from a full charge?! On my macbook I run a program called "Coconut Battery" every now and again. It tells you how degraded your battery is from a full new fresh one. There's also a rather long process for "calibrating" your battery that I remember doing once. Won't make your battery last longer, but might make the reporting of how much longer it has more accurate: Calibration process |

This from a random google on the subject: Using Apple's recommended settings of normal power usage, wireless turned on, and half screen brightness, I netted better than expected battery life in the exact same conditions. The test system lasted for 4 hours and 54 minutes, or about 4.9 hours, of average web browsing. So based on that I'll continue the search for more than an hour and a half worth of energy. If I'm surfing and reading email, my year-old MBP battery lasts about 3.5 hours. If I have Lightroom and iPhoto open, that goes down to 2. You're not supposed to leave it plugged in all the time, but it's kind of a pain to remember to unplug it after it's charged. |

How do ya'll use iPhoto? I find I have images that don't really fit the Events paradigm so easily. Out of my ten thousand images most of them are reference shots I've gotten off the Interwebs. Say a hundred images of planes. I can't just make them all a "Plane" event because some of them are of cockpits, ailerons, speed brakes or any number of other details. I'm used to a tagging system from Vista Gallery, it worked pretty well except it didn't place the files automatically. Can I get something similar out of iPhoto though? If you use keywords (tags) in iPhoto you can make folders based on those keywords. So you could tag a photo with cockpit and plane and the photos would be in both of those folders. It's like using smart playlists in iTunes if you've done that. |

And it places al those photos automatically unlike Vista Gallery (which I think sucks). Iphoto does get a little unmanagable once you go over 10,000 photos, I'm at 13,000 and thinking of switching to Aperture or Lightroom (which I've been using for cropping touch-ups anyway). |

Aperture is kind of overkill if you're just trying to manage pics that you've downloaded off the net. And sure, we all believe that they're pictures of planes. The question is, what's "aileron" a euphemism for in your twisted porn sorting system? |

Oh right, image porn, what a quaint idea deadlock. Good one. jj that sounds awesome, I looked through Help and figured out how to add keywords. But can you explain your solution a bit slower? It feels like I'm missing something. You're saying I should add all the, in this case, planes as a single airplane event, and then add keywords to differentiate the subgroups? You're getting hung up on the term "events". Just think of "events" as "folders" and work from there. |

First of all screw events. They're worthless and take up too much time, I haven't found them to be helpful at all. Just use keywords and smart folders. Create smart folders called "planes", "cockpits" "breasts" "ATM" etc. When creating the smart folder have it gather pictures by keyword. Then add keywords to each photo. One photo might have keywords of "cockpit" "plane" and "F-15". This photo would be gathered into three different smart folders for each of those keywords. You can add star ratings to the mix as well. Add a five star rating to your best reference pictures that goes to a "best folder". Add a single star to pictures that you haven't sorted yet so it goes to a folder for pictures you're still working on. Here's how I use it. I take a photo of my mother-in-law reading to my son. It's the greatest photo ever taken, and I probably want to post it on my site for everyone but Gabe to enjoy. So I tag it with the keywords "wyatt" "jolinn" "holbrook"(mother-in-laws last name) and "*****". Then it automatically goes into individual folders that use those keywords. Also if I'm looking for something more exact, I can create a smart folder that uses the keywords "wyatt" "jolinn" and "*****" That folder will give me only the photos that have both of those people, and are the photos I consider the very best. It makes things easy for my wife. She scrapbooks and she know that if she's looking for pictures of my daughter from age 4, she can just create a smart folder that has the keywords "sidney" and only includes photos from 2005. You can also make it specific by saying I only want pictures of "wings", and not pictures of "tails", then you only get the specific pictures of that one thing. It takes a while to get it up and running, but then as long as you keep it up to date it's pretty simple. It's one thing that's holding me back from transfering to Lightroom, last time I tried I couldn't get the keywords to transfer and I don't want to redo 13,00 photos. I'm typing this on a PC, so if something isn't right I apologize. I don't read PC at home on my Mac much, so if you need something more specific, email my name at gmail and I'll post something from home that's more in depth. |

Usually people's names or things like Vacation, Holiday or Fun (for my attempts at actual artistic stuff). |

I ended up spending some time with Events, letting iPhoto auto-split things. And it did a surprisingly good job, I didn't even know but most of my (non-reference) images are properly dated via EXIF data so all kinds of interesting events emerged. I once came across some codec-pack for Quicktime, so it'd play a bunch of useful formats. Like, right now I can't watch basic .avi files of the (I assume) divx variant or whatever. I used VLC until GOM Player hit, and I had to switch because I liked it better. Plus if you're missing a codec, it gives you a link so you can install it. There's a Unix command-line version of unrar; I'd be surprised if there isn't a build for the Mac. Fink is possibly a good place to start though I generally avoid anything that requires me to install Fink or DarwinPorts first. Or anything that doesn't run as a native CLI or Quartz app (i.e., anything that requires the X server in order to run). |
