Let's play a... game?
April 25th 2008, 02:36 CEST by bishop After spending several months not giving a damn, I finally got around to purchasing the orange box and I am now getting into playing Team Fortress 2 on a regular basis. This feels like a game that most of us have, and could probably get into organizing game nights around. So why not? Gabe's already going through the initial steps on server setup! Maybe it's a horrible idea doomed to failure (this topic sure seems like that!) but when was the last time all of us got together to play something? Enemy Territory? Bombing Run? And just think, there are no pants for me to steal! I've never made a topic before. I have no idea what I am doing. |

Off topic: You guys need to help me figure out what iPod to buy next. I lost mine on a flight back from San Francisco. Got to baggage claim before realizing I didn't have it on me, talked them into letting me go back to the gate, then the agents there wouldn't let me back on the plane (which was boarding new passengers) but went and looked for it themselves. Of course, they didn't find it. I hope that whatever douche is listening to it now enjoys it and then dies of cancer. ANYWAY. I've got $450 coming to me from a freelance writing project I did, so I'm going to buy a replacement. I'm leaning heavily towards the iPod Touch because it's just so damn nifty, and it's got WiFi. But any honest appraisal of how I use these things reveals that I really just listen to music and audiobooks. I could be wrong since I've never had a video iPod before, but I don't foresee much video watching. And a closed WiFi network at work means that my portable web browsing would probably be limited to home. Where I have a couple of computers (including a laptop) already. And I don't buy music from iTunes (thank you, Amazon.com) so while the integrated iTunes store is cool in theory, I'll never use it. So the rational thing to do would probably be to buy another Nano since they're cheaper and probably more durable. But the Touch is so nifty. You guys need to talk me into doing something. |

I love the Nano I got for Christmas to replace my Mini. It's tiny, but the screen is big enough to enjoy Peggle. And at 8 GB it's plenty big enough for my small music library, audiobooks and podcasts. I went with the Nano over the Touch because I was certain I'd never watch movies on it or use the other applications. |

Personally, I got a Sandisk Sansa because it was retarded cheap and does more than I ever need. It plays video, but like the iPod you have to convert anything you want to watch, and I never plan ahead and/or can't be bothered. For an mp3 player, all you need is something that plays music and has as much memory as you need. Mines 8gb but I could probably get by with 2, considering how little I use it. If I had a car stereo that it could plug into, then I might need more. I would say that you should get the nano, if you're set on an iPod. Why pay for features you don't need? Also, if you want a decent sized flash player, the Sansa View goes all the way up to 32GB, for not too much. Though the 16GB one is significantly cheaper, and both of them have a micro SD slot for future expansion. It isn't a Fallout game unless I use my pickpocketing skill to place a ticking dynamite bomb into the pockets of an 8 year old boy.

I have the HTC Touch today plugin on my PDA. It's neat. What do you mean, not impressed? I don't know the tech specs of the Touch, specifically, but my Trinity has: a Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM, it's a quadband phone with 3G and Edge, it has a2 mpx camera, a front camera for viedeocalls, a Gps receiver, WiFi, BlueTooth with A2DP audio, IrDa, it has M$ Push Email for Exchange servers, can run Blackberry client, runs MSN Live and Messenger, together with M$ Voice Command it can be completely voice controlled, I can install the software I want... The iPhone on the other hand, looks pretty and has a nice UI, but that's about it. I've read somewhere that , in Germany, an iPhone costs you about 1200€ from the moment you take it out the store till the moment the contract expires and it's legally yours, and then you have a phone that does less than a Nokia N95 or almost any other PDA phone. The iPod Touch and iPhone aren't compatible with 64-bit Windows or Win2k. So you need either 32-bit XP SP2 or 32-bit Vista in order to use one. "I don't like story in games." - Soren Johnson

Do the iPods show up on the computer as mass storage device only, because the drivers that support the advanced functions of the Apple PC software aren't compatible, or aren't they even recognized as mass storage devices and are therefore completely unusable? They are recognized as mass storage devices, but iTunes doesn't recognize them as iPods. You can't transfer anything through iTunes. And the device requires that you activate it through iTunes once before you can do anything on it, so you must have access to a compatible machine. "I don't like story in games." - Soren Johnson

UI and the ability to rate my iTunes music on the go are two big factors for me. I am a total rating/tag/album art nazi. I'm all about making sure that everything is synched with my iTunes library as accurately as possible. |

So basically all x64 users miss out on is the ability to sync with iTunes. Doesn't really sound as too big a deal for me. I haven't tried or seen iTunes, but generally I hate music library progs, like MediaMonkey. For me, nothing beats looking directly at the music folders on my HD and just clicking on the song(s) I like to hear. Format, that sounds like Chaos. The Smart Playlists in iTunes are great. If you want to listen to all your Indie Pop that you've played less then three times in the last three weeks which is rated more than 3 stars, it is all generated automagically. Once you commit to tagging and rating everything, it's sooooo swell. |

Gaggle, I'm going to try and post more. I'm the most educated and well spoken member of a lot of the other communities I partake in and that scares the bejeezus out of me. Being exposed to the rest of the internet without the Crap to balance it out is rotting my brain. |

I'm not sure why that wouldn't be a reasonable option here. I rate and categorize my music because then I don't have to manually build a playlist every single time I want to listen to music. If my mood is to listen to Middle Eastern ambient, I choose that playlist rather than having to manually go through every 4 minutes or so and click a new song to play. That would seem silly to me. I rate the music because every so often I like to remove the music I get tired of listening to from a playlist, so sorting by the star system means I can just grab a chunk of 3-star-and-below songs and move them in one shot. Bellydance!

It is a bit of a chaos in the sense that I have a few albums who's songs are called Track1, Track2 etc. But generally, those are albums I don't care about much and there are some of them that I havent heard. I have seven main folders called: Pop, Dance, Hip-Hop, Soul, Jazz, Rock, Soundtracks. I throw full albums into the pertinent folders, loose songs into the folder's root.
