You Filthy Gaijin...
April 12th 2008, 02:05 CEST by Greg

The Japanese are at it again, showing they have no idea how to broach racially sensitive topics in games.

Recently, Capcom released a trailer for Resident Evil 5. In it, Chris Redfield is in a town which looks to be Caribbean, populated by black people who apparently turn into zombies. Which he then has to kill, or something.

The imagery from the trailer is controversial. Is it meant to reflect history? Is it yet another example of Japanese game developers playing off of racial stereotypes (ala Barret in FFVII, hell the topic name "filthy gaijin" is yet another Japanese stereotype)?

Hey, yotsuya, there's something I wanted to ask you;

Do/did you rise your child(ren) bilingually (is that correct to say?)?

My wife and I want to do that, but I find it very hard to be consistent with it... As my wife speaks very little German, I'm talking Spanish the whole day. I know I shouldn't, but some force is driving me to continue to speak Spanish to my kiddo too, it's hard for me to switch languages all the time.

What has your experience been with this whole multilanguage thing?

FoRMaT-

My wife is bilingual, and I'm not. I speak very little Spanish, so that isn't an issue. Our older kids understand enough Spanish to get by (aqua, comida, and the like), but we couldn't have a conversation with someone who speaks nothing but Spanish. I'd like to learn it, and I'd like my 6 year old to learn it, but it's not vital. I mean, we live in America. Everyone I know and interact with speaks the same language I do. I don't have any relatives who speak nothing but Spanish. I'm third generation Mexican-American, so it's not like we hold sacred the mother tongue or anything.

#829 by gaggle

It's mainland Europe, I assumed English would be coming in with the milk. Bilingualism pretty much guaranteed, or at least I hope so! So Spanish would be, like, the third language to learn.

Pretty good language choice though, used in many places. And I hear it's very similar to Mexican! *cough*

So yot, do you get to take the day off for El día de Muertos and whatever other crazy things movies portray as Mexican culture? Seems like a waste to not (ab)use your heritage at least a little..

The English lessons, in school back in Spain at least, are total shit. 99% of all Spaniards I know/knew would not have a bigger repertoire than "fuck, thank you, please" and five words or so more, I kid you not.

In Germany, it seems to be being tought better, (or Germans have more talent for learning languages, who knows) because most adults seem to at least understand quite a bit, but nowadays you are pretty much forced to know English anyway, because of all the English that's being introduced more and more into the German society.

Scandinavian children do amaze me with their English skills. Back when working at the hotel, it wasn't unusual to see Danish or Swedish ten-year olds who spoke incredibly good English.

If we stay here, I'm confident he'll get good at speaking English. If we, however, go back to Spain, I'll help him learn it as good as I can.

If I have a chance later, I'll post a manifesto on the state of being a Mexican-American in 21st Century America.

And as far as 'Mexican' holidays go, no, I don't celebrate them. In fact, in Mexico Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday, kinda like Arbor Day here. It's celebrated here in the US just an excuse to drink and eat at the taco bar. Dia de los muertos is a fascinating holiday, but you don't see people celebrating in their homes or anything like that. You only see it celebrated by cultural organizations.

This game is all about the multiple playthroughs. If you're the sole survivor you get to know the guy who is killing the scientists from Akuze. If you  Do the Torfan ruthless bit the Major Kyle story is part of your background. The order you tackle the missions is important to the dialogue, in addition to the whole renegage/goodguy bit. You can stumble upon a plot in progress by landing on a random planet, or actually talk to everyone and get the clues that lead you to the interesting planets. Your only real goal is to kill Saren, and you can even talk him into doing that.

Yotsuya, you're from Arizona, right? How do you feel about it as a place to live? This last trip over to the US made me realise how much I like it over there, and how sick I am of my own country, and that I'd be a fool not to take the opportunity and move. I've been to Arizona and liked it for the dry heat, rather than the nightmare humidity you get in most of the other states I've visited. Is it culturally part of the South, or is it more like Florida or California?
