You Filthy Gaijin...
April 12th 2008, 02:05 CEST by Greg

The Japanese are at it again, showing they have no idea how to broach racially sensitive topics in games.

Recently, Capcom released a trailer for Resident Evil 5. In it, Chris Redfield is in a town which looks to be Caribbean, populated by black people who apparently turn into zombies. Which he then has to kill, or something.

The imagery from the trailer is controversial. Is it meant to reflect history? Is it yet another example of Japanese game developers playing off of racial stereotypes (ala Barret in FFVII, hell the topic name "filthy gaijin" is yet another Japanese stereotype)?

I was wrong about Stalker. What's the general PC verdict on it?

Personally I loved STALKER. It's a diamond in the rough and for some reason that added to the unworldly scariness of the scenery. Not many games have managed to scare the shit out of me the way STALKER did, so it wins.

Seen the Stalker: Clear Sky DX10 footage? It's nice and all, but nowhere near enough to get me to install Vista. In fact it's just adding fuel to the DX10=pointless graphical twinkly bits fire. It's also remarkably low-res for promotional footage. Jaggies are so 2004.

I found Stalker awesome...until I figured out the game and found out I could kill anyone any NPC in it with a wee bit of planning...as a matter of fact, I could kill every NPC in the game, including whole squads of guys that attacked for no good reason.

In other words, the game was pretty cool until I got further in to it.

Actually, DX10 equals lazier programmers. The end result may or may not be prettier than with DX9, but that's still a step into the right direction - as compared to, say, the lense flare / cell shading / bloom / hdr craze of days past.

Vegas 2 is pretty good.  Even the PC version is dumbed down for people like me that don't want to control every single piece of the team.  That was my main problem, with the Rainbow Six games (but I'm guessing the reason most PC gamers liked it).

I don't quite follow. You can kill NPCs, I get that, but that makes it.. they're affecting how intense a later firefight is? Or are you saying you can even kill all the NPCs and they're supposed to be super strong, so that ruined the later parts because, everything was kind of a pushover compared to the NPCs?

I prefer 50 quality PC games that need patches to 500 shitty console games that aren't even worth a rental. Many console games don't need bugs, they are already crap.

...

I have nothing against consoles. I have had and enjoyed lots of consoles in my life. If I could afford a 360 right now I'd have one. I don't, so I play on the platform that I like most and come back to, and that will always be there, while console generations come and go. Cut the "elitist moron" bullshit.

Did you have a stroke?  The first post is pure PC snobbery, and retarded to boot since there are way more good games on consoles than PC these days.

With the PSP I feel like I discovered a whole new avenue of gaming. I have seen a light that I have not seen for quite a while. I was freed from my desk with the console, and now I'm freed from my couch with the PSP. Whenever I have to go away on business, or visit family for any amount of time, I will no longer be game free!

Sounds like he's talking about the game getting a lot easier once you get the nice long range guns with good scopes. Which is sort of true, roaming is a lot easier at that point. But you can still find challenges in the red forest and all the underground bunkers. But going back to the garbage and cordon is ridiculously easy at that point. I was able to take on the entire military garisson at the cordon without too much trouble.

Yeah, Gunpoint has the right of it, but before I got those guns even, I killed off an entire military garrison by using the roof and the AI being pretty erratic.

It definitely wasn't the worse game ever, but the "omg scary" vibe went right out the window at that point for me. *shrugs*

To be fair, I definitely wouldn't call it a horrible game and I've been thinking about giving it another shot as of late.

Totally true. My nephews have their DS', and I'm sure it all right, but not what I'm looking for in a portable gaming system. The first gen PSP had horrible loading times, but I recently learned that they came out with an update last year that ups the double the memory and mitigated a lot of issues with the device. Plus, there's good games for it that are, and aren't, GTA.

I guess you've never seen the bins and bins of shitty PC games in stores?

Platform != quality. Many games these days come out across all platforms, so a shitty game on a console is going to be a shitty game on the PC version, too if we're talking about actual gameplay quality (and not a situation in which a port is bad because of lazy control and UI remappage and such).

Part of it is situational jealousy. Why does Uwe get to make movies about beloved (?) video games, while I sit here wanking to Lara Croft porn and I could do a much better game? Or, why does Deer Hunter sell so much when I couldn't even find a coder, three modelers, a level designer, and 4 artists for my RTS-adventure hybrid Final Fantasy Metroid Half-life 2 mod?

Obviously killing those soldiers weren't scary for you, but did it distract from the scariness of being underground? They're two separate actions…, and I don't follow if you're arguing one interferes with the other.

In case of the latter I gotta say Stalker is such an uneven game there simply isn't a whole package to enjoy. If judged as a whole experience, the sum of its parts, I'd rate it pretty damn low. Lots of retarded shit happens, not in the least the whole beginning being totally void of any sort of interesting events or moments of intensity. But later on, after you get to the first quest-hub, things sort of… gel together. You gloss over the stupid shit and start tasting its uniquely flavored creamy center.

I mostly see shitty PC games from the bin costing 2-10€ I bought Boiling Point, expecting nothing but meh, just because I was curious about it and it cost 2.50€. What's the price of cheapest, not used, current-gen console game you can buy? 25€? I wouldn't have bought it at that price.

I'm saying that shitty PC games usually are seen in the shit bin, while on console they cost full price. I don't look in the shit bin, so I get to see good games, mostly. Anyway, as I've said before, my impression is that while there may be less releases for PC, the shit game/good game ratio is better than for consoles. I don't have anything to back that up. It's just my feeling. I may very possibly be wrong. What, me worry?

Wouldn't be the first time, right?

I don't worry about percentages.  There are more good games on consoles, so that's where I spend the vast majority of my time.  There are tons of shovelware games on all systems, but it barely even registers.  I don't care how many there are or how much they cost, because I neither buy them nor play them.  They might as well not exist. How many good games there are and how much they cost does matter.

Squad stuff really is difficult to get right. It's an infinitely delicate balance, though I for one liked what Valve did in Episode 1. Alyx followed me, was more or less useful, and never ever got in the way. Good times. I can't say I was as pleased with Call of Duty 4, to say the least.

Halo 3 might be okay as well, but I didn't play it long* and the allied squadmember didn't seem to run around creating much havoc at all, he was just around me shooting things non-intrusively.

* I didn't play the campaign solo for long that is, I swapped to coop campaign pretty fast

An annoying aspect of Shadarr and Formats otherwise humourous exchange is that "good console game" and "good pc game" aren't fixed sizes. We all like different games. Which is annoying, because everything would be so much simpler if you could all just agree to go by what I deem to be good and bad games.
