So is Planetcrap dead then?
April 8th 2008, 02:18 CEST by Chunkstyle In #planetcrap the question came up of whether the site is finally dead. Post counts are down to the level of when the Crap started, the number of posters is way down (especially when you include Joker alts), and the level of discussion has dropped as well. So is that it? Have the multitude of other gaming sites and forums removed the need for the crappiest place on the web? Will the last one to leave forever please turn off the server? |

I agree with what Matt says. Imagine me saying the same thing with less gay hippiness. Game Developers: Don't forget the zombie monkeys.

So with more straight hippiness? Or more sad hippiness? |

Show me message board software that successfully remembers exactly where I was in every single thread last time I was there and I'll believe this bullshit about other forums passing Planetcrap by. If I go to PC and open a thread, every other thread still remembers where I am in those threads. If I go to Neo Gaf or QT3 and open one thread, all those other threads assume I'm reading them too, and suddenly my place is lost. Other forum software sucks balls. Three things that would save Planetcrap, God fixing the submission bin so we don't need Gabe to push things through, being nicer to new people, and shutting irc down. Even one of those would be an improvement. Of course if there was a way for me to et on irc at work I probably would care more about it and less about PC. |
Of course I'm happy with anything Morn-God does, because he is all knowing and will do what is best for all that were created by him and worship him. |
I'm not convinced that the IRC channel has much impact on the site - there aren't that many people on there to really make much difference. |
I'm currently toying around with an idea for PC that would, in fact, be pretty radical. I think most of you would initially hate it. But then, after a week or five, you would possibly love it! Either way, it would be something unique and true to the drunken spirit of PC. The problem is that besides having been very, very busy over the last couple of, uh, years, I'm currently in the middle of a big fat web development burn-out crisis. I don't know how long it will last, so I don't know when there will even just be a chance of tackling the new PC. It's entirely possible that once I've moved past this feeling of being burned out, I will once again be too busy again with client work. Sigh. In other words, I can't really make any promises at the moment. All I can say is that even though I haven't been involved in the site that much for a while now, I very much appreciate that it -- and you weird people -- are still here. PC has survived all my other web endeavours. I have a strong interest in it not dying anytime soon. Who runs this place?!

IRC isn't getting shut down. That's crazy talk. |

Why did I buy a car like that in the first place? Basically, I only want the cylinder head and the tail lights, the rest will go on sale piece by piece. It's a shame, because the car's body is in better shape than that of the car I'm repairing. You're worse than friggan gunp0int. What car did buy and what are you fixing, etc. If I go to PC and open a thread, every other thread still remembers where I am in those threads. If I go to Neo Gaf or QT3 and open one thread, all those other threads assume I'm reading them too, and suddenly my place is lost. They're really two different beasts. Those other forums have some many threads that it's not interesting to read them all so the forum software assumes that when you leave you read everything that was interesting. I certainly don't want to read everything piece of drivel at QT3. PC is different. Fewer topics on the front page mean that the conversations are more worthy of reading everything. Here, I want to read or skim every piece of drivel. The thing with PC is that it needs a few more people, but how to get people here? There's no marketing to speak of and people have quietly gone on to other things. I think the old meme of newbs getting flamed out is overrated as the place has generally matured over the years, but yes, a 1,000 post topic on the front page may be a little intimidating. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
The only thing wrong with PC is that the topics in the submission bin sit for too long. The changes that people are suggesting that sound like other forum software would completely ruin the site. Some of the things that people are saying are the worst parts about the site are its best parts. What other forums are you a part of where you've gotten to know your fellow posters so well over so many years? What other forum has posters that would have pulled together for such a cool project as jjohnsen's little girl's dollhouse? What other forum (okay, aside from Shacknews) has its posters meeting each other in person so often? In what other forum do you know people -- not the avatars or the profiles but the people -- like you know them here? It's that way because we've spent so many years posting and chatting. Yes, there are few of us posting and we tend to talk about the same things again and again. But we do inject new life into these conversations sometimes, and we do occasionally bring up a new and interesting topic of discussion. Think of all the political talk lately, that's been interesting and relevant. And don't friends who've known each other for years do the same thing, occasionally rehash old topics? It's not really that different. We're comfortable with each other. Even the trolls. That's not a bad thing. Bellydance!

PC IRC has been around for nearly a decade, yet people only say it's negatively impacting the site because while the site ebbs and flows with inactivity, IRC has stayed pretty constant. It's a dumb argument and people trying to make it don't realize or maybe just don't understand that the IRC channel isn't even at the level of popularity that it was 4 or 5 years ago. |^^^^^^^^^^^^ |||__

I"m not sure the IRC channel is less popular, just the people involved have changed. Game Developers: Don't forget the zombie monkeys.

I am still curious about the topic thing. What interesting, reasonably written topic in the past few years has sat there languishing? Democracy typically takes hold and I push it. Are people confusing topics sitting there with no topics actually getting written? |
You've been pushing topics lately, but before that there was bin rot and everything would be discussed in some other topic before it got through. I guess there's mass lazy inertia to topics. m0nty, back to IRC! <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

But his point is what it is. Most of the topics are just meh to begin with. |^^^^^^^^^^^^ |||__

Actually, if we're going to talk about this, I have a thing that....well, whatever, it's a thing. I find I don't talk about games on the Crap as much as I might, specifically PC games, because it feels, rightly or wrongly, like a lot of the folks here who still game right now pirate everything. For whatever reason I don't feel satisfied trying to debate the strengths or weaknesses (let alone the value) of a game with someone who pirated it. Are my perceptions off? "Bioshock, sadly, is no Painkiller." - BobJustBob
You've been pushing topics lately What is the time frame for lately? |
I can get behind that, but do you feel similarly weird when talking about pirated TV shows and movies? At least 360 games aren't readily pirated. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
Cheesy, movies, yes. TV shows, no. "Bioshock, sadly, is no Painkiller." - BobJustBob
I don't know why piracy would affect a conversation on whether a game is a good game or not. On it's bugginess, sure, but.... Plus, there is not a forum you would go to where there weren't at least a fair amount of pirates, but most of them might not SAY they are pirates because they wouldn't want the shunning. Here, you can be honest in your thievery, which might be more honest, actually. Having said that, I bought witcher the other day and like it, even if all the sex really is stupid. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" - "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."
Well, as far as I can tell he PC warez crowd is Dum, anaguens, and assembler (maybe format). Movie pirates include gaggle and I'm sure other people, but I'm forgetting who. I dunno, but listing it out like that I don't know if they cover "most folks." Maybe most folks that only play PC games, though. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

Re: topics I don't really see the lack of topics as being so much a problem personally, but m0nty is right that we are too lazy to write decent topics, and he is also right that one answer is to just copy the digg model for topic generation. The solution could be as simple as making another greasemonkey plugin which works the way the digg bookmarklets work, but instead would automagically generate a topic from the linked article. |
Maybe I am indeed confusing submission bin lag with lack of topics, since Gabe does in fact push them. I haven't written a topic in a while, but in the interests of experimentation and helping out the site, I'll see if I can write some in the near future that are relevant and interesting. In fact, I may have one that I can write up at lunch today. Bellydance!

IRC isn't getting shut down. That's crazy talk. What if I give you a delicious sandwich? What say you to that? I joke a lot about the death of the site, but short of a mass suicide, it's not going anywhere. People go into hibernation and the site ebbs and ebbs, but the tub will never really empty all the way because we're too stubborn to turn the tap all the way off. We'll even go so far as to start up another topic about the death of the site. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.

It always seems that discussing its death brings a short term boost at least. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

The lack of topics doesn't bother me that much, as it keeps the Christmas topic on the first page, which helps prevent ghosts. Game Developers: Don't forget the zombie monkeys.

The main problem I have with PC and the reason I don't post/read more is that you all feed the trolls too much. It often pushes the signal/noise ratio into intolerable levels, and paired with the broken topic system makes the site a boring chore to read because the trolling spreads all over the current topics. If there were more topics, the trolling might be more localized and I could just move on to a new topic and let the old one die. Yes, there are good parts, but I hate wading through waist-high troll dung to get to them. |
So, in order to fix PlanetCrap: • Ignore feature for both trolls and posts that quote trolls • Fix topic submission • Enable images Excellent. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.
Blog. 194 lbs. 14 to go. |
Enable images? That's crazy. You're crazy. Stop being crazy. |
I know I harp on it, but stop bitching about the "broken topic system" and fucking write some topics. Unless your definition of "broken topic system" is "topics don't get written". In that case, carry on. |
Jesus, this broken topic system is going to be the death of this place. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.
Blog. 194 lbs. 14 to go. |

Let's face it: PC is no longer relevant. No topic gets linked on any news site, game developers no longer post here (or not about work, anyway) - it's just a small, ever-dwindling bunch of people writing a sort of community blog with the occasional insult and/or discussion thrown in. We need more people, end of story. #10 - Why not both come out of a window?
I know I harp on it, but stop bitching about the "broken topic system" and fucking write some topics. Unless your definition of "broken topic system" is "topics don't get written". In that case, carry on. I just said I'd help by writing some! Get off my back! YOU'RE NOT MY REAL DAD! Bellydance!
I also vouch for the '"n00bs" get flamed and don't come back' thing as being overrated. Look at TreeFrog. We didn't run him off. |
Gabe (#89): I know I harp on it, but stop bitching about the "broken topic system" and fucking write some topics. Unless your definition of "broken topic system" is "topics don't get written". In that case, carry on. Gabe...we've had this discussion before. You pushing topics that work for you isn't a working submission bin. As a matter of fact, that's a plan for more of the same. I don't write topics here because why am I looking to get you to push a topic, to validate its existence? I can just to qt3 or my site and post a topic without having to go through the Does Gabe Like It™ process. As a matter of fact, I think 5-10 of the regulars, and more/less as needed, should be given the ability to push topics. Even if I'm not a part of that group, that would go a LONG way to providing new and interesting shit to talk about. For instance, had I the ability to get stuff on the front page in a timely manner, I would have posted a writeup about Stardock and GPG going to together and Stardock's Impulse. I'm very excited by both of those prospects. Sure, I could have done and put it in the bin and told you and hope you decided it was worth the push, but why do I want to do that when again, I can just do it on my site or go to qt3 and do it there (or in this case, talk about it there in the already created thread)? "Thug means never having to say you're sorry." - UTurn
The main problem I have with PC and the reason I don't post/read more is that you all feed the trolls too much. What constitutes a troll is different to everyone. There are few trolls only here and everyone else has some balance of content to troll/snark. The troll that must not be named, lest you get blamed by funk, hasn't been around for over a month now (thanks Gabe!). <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
Gabe doesn't "push topics that work for him." He pushes pretty much anything except for marketing spam and moronic shit from trolls like Joker or Ng Yo. Invention is the Green Goblin of Necessary Lemonade.
--Flowers |
I was joking. Matt, seriously, stop it. Gabe will push almost anything through, he's not approving anything, he's trying to help keep the site fresh. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.
Blog. 194 lbs. 14 to go. |
WTF Perkins? Gabe doesn't pass any judgement on any topic other than the obvious spam and trolls (e.g. Ng Yo and the troll that must not be named, lest you be scolded by funk). <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
Oh, screw you, Ergo. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
Cheesy's right. Obviously, Caroline was a troll, but some people might think Gaggle and his complaining about pirated HD video not being in 7.1 is a troll, or FoRMaT and whatever he's talking about as being a troll. |
Matt, you had one topic that Gabe chose not to push through. Out of all the topics that have been posted, that's the only topic that wasn't a deliberate troll that I can remember him choosing not to push. You choosing not to post new topics because of that one experience is being kind of silly when I'm sure you'd come up with quite a few he'd push. Bellydance!
Who cares if PC is "relevant" or not? Game Developers: Don't forget the zombie monkeys.
Having said that, I can see the argument that you don't have to wait for your topic to be posted when you do it at qt3, so you have instant gratification there. But that's one of the good things about this site -- there's a shit filter. It's rarely needed except for the occasional troll submission, but it forces a standard of quality on the topics for discussion, and I like that. Bellydance!
I don't think I have ever submitted a topic here-I AM PART OF THE PROBLEM! |
I should submit a topic about how cute my baby is compared to all of yours. If Gabe doesn't push it, I will accuse him of personally choking the site to death with his bare hands. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.
Blog. 194 lbs. 14 to go. |
Also, Matt, in your post you say that you'd like to see a couple of other people empowered to approve topics, but then you go and say that you won't submit a topic here because you don't want to have to go through the "do the moderators like it" filter and one of your topics was rejected before. So really, the problem isn't the amount of people approving topics -- Gabe is a query away for that and very responsive -- the problem is that once one of the approvers rejects your topic you don't want to write any more, and so we're back to the issue of there not being enough topics. Though most people shouldn't take one rejection so seriously. Bellydance!
