So is Planetcrap dead then?
April 8th 2008, 02:18 CEST by Chunkstyle In #planetcrap the question came up of whether the site is finally dead. Post counts are down to the level of when the Crap started, the number of posters is way down (especially when you include Joker alts), and the level of discussion has dropped as well. So is that it? Have the multitude of other gaming sites and forums removed the need for the crappiest place on the web? Will the last one to leave forever please turn off the server? |

Topic: So is Planetcrap dead then?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Repeatedly, probably. The only thing that's wrong with PlanetCrap is that there aren't enough new topics and that's because the pipeline system is fundamentally flawed. New topics don't make it out of the bin fast enough. This means that: a) the topics are no longer topical when they do make it out of the bin or have been talked to death elsewhere. b) there are plenty of great writers on this board, many of whom would be capable of drafting some interesting, incisive articles for discussion (Marsh, monty when he can be bothered, even G-man). But the length of time that topics languish in the bin means that any would-be writers have long since become disincentivised and just can't be arsed. I'm sure that Marsh et al. will tell me that that's not why they don't submit articles but I'm willing to bet that if the submission bin system was fixed or abandoned that they and others would feel more inclined to submit articles. c) I've long maintained that PlanetCrap, while undoubtedly cliquey, isn't particularly newb-unfriendly; certainly no more than any other forum that I've read. Yeah, there's maybe a bit more snark but it's generally in good fun and I think that most people recognise this and don't take it seriously. I think that the biggest obstacle to newbies is that threads on the front page tend to be pretty old. Even if a newb does happen across the site and does want to participate in the conversation, they'll quickly find that the thread has digressed onto a new topic (probably several new topics, sometimes at the same time). There's no incentive to participate in a conversation that has little relation to the original thread and has probably itself started to digress into something else. |
Yeah, I can imagine it being a little daunting being a newb and looking at a topic only realise you have 27,000 posts to catch up on. But we don't get any new visitors anyway, and the whole topic system has effectively been abandoned here. Each thread is its own organic mish-mash, and anyone is free to bring up a new "topic" in any thread. Maybe you're right that that's not a good way to operate, but I think most regulars here are all caught up with the front page threads, and so we will all get to any new posts within a reasonable amount of time. When you leave for awhile and come back to a few hundred posts it is true that you generally have no idea what they are about. |
We haven't talked about sound effects in any other threads yet, so I don't know if I quite agree with your assessment. But yeah it certainly was true, Gabe and m0rn has helped limit the severity of that issue somewhat, and I'll grant you that the repercussions of that topic crib-death period will be with us for a long time. Maybe until the end. But fewer topics really is exactly what I like about PC. I used to like the ordinary forum board thing once upon a time, but after I got on PC I realized how little that classic system really works. You, or that is to say I, just end up with a ton of isolated rooms that aren't really worth visiting unless the headline grabs ya. PC in its current state is much more like an ongoing IRC thing, but slower paced and with post-perfect scrollback support. It's us casually chatting amongst ourselves and everyone is free to join a sub-topic or steer us towards something new and exciting. lwf (#21): m0nty was I'm not dead yet. As for PC, I've had this discussion with mr0n many times. blah is the underlying problem. It was innovative for its time, kudos to mr0n for building it, he's a sex god etc etc, but it's a relic of a bygone era. We quickly found its flaws, and the Internet has since produced many new ways of doing it better. Due to mr0n being busy with girlies and consulting and holding chainsaws and moving to Brighton where the beaches are full of rocks, he hasn't fixed it or made something new... yet. mr0n is capable of producing something that would totally fucking own Kevin Rose, Lowtax, the MeFi cocksmokers, the /. fucktards et al. He hasn't quite hit on the right formula that would both please you existing fuckos and attract a new bunch of fuckos and keep you all happy. Maybe you lot could make yourselves useful and think up something. |
Oh, and he could own Twitter as well. |
What? I couldn't hear over the slurping noises. |
Solution: Unite with q3t. Make PC the off-topic section of qt3. "Action stars of two decades ago shot .44 bullets out of their cocks. Honestly, if me and Charles Bronson were in the same room I'd kill myself just to make sure he didn't hurt me."
Worst. Idea. Eever. "the accusations are such nonsense that I have found it difficult to treat them with the contempt that they deserve." - Clarke
I don't understand the popularity of Twitter. Do people really feel the necessity to spew every last fleeting thought on to a public forum? As if E/N blogging wasn't enough, you've got to do it in real time? |
I have a cunning plan. Who runs this place?!
Worst idea ever? Voting George W. Bush! Twice! "Action stars of two decades ago shot .44 bullets out of their cocks. Honestly, if me and Charles Bronson were in the same room I'd kill myself just to make sure he didn't hurt me."
I have a cunning plan. Sehr gut! "Action stars of two decades ago shot .44 bullets out of their cocks. Honestly, if me and Charles Bronson were in the same room I'd kill myself just to make sure he didn't hurt me."
I fear change. |
I watched Blackadder the Third last night - it was brilliant, it has aged really well. |
See, totally off-topic after just 38 posts, you fucks! |
I wonder what our cats are doing right now. |
What all cats do: SUCK! "Action stars of two decades ago shot .44 bullets out of their cocks. Honestly, if me and Charles Bronson were in the same room I'd kill myself just to make sure he didn't hurt me."
Shut it. Cats rule. This well-justified argument brought to you by Nescafe instant coffee. |

Alright Baldric. Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard.

I fucking hate car grease! I'm taking out the cylinder head of a car I bought a few days ago and, man, this thing must haver never seen detergent of any kind. This is the dirtiest car I have ever laid my hands on. Everywhere I look; drease and dirt! I would like to see the previous owner of this car, or see how he lives. I'd like to also tell him that cigarette ashes go into the ashtray and are not meant to build gray mountains between the seats and the gearbox tunnel. Some people are real pigs, man. Why did I buy a car like that in the first place? Basically, I only want the cylinder head and the tail lights, the rest will go on sale piece by piece. It's a shame, because the car's body is in better shape than that of the car I'm repairing. "Action stars of two decades ago shot .44 bullets out of their cocks. Honestly, if me and Charles Bronson were in the same room I'd kill myself just to make sure he didn't hurt me."
So what is the cunning plan, anyway? It had better be really cunning. |
It involves homosexuality. "Action stars of two decades ago shot .44 bullets out of their cocks. Honestly, if me and Charles Bronson were in the same room I'd kill myself just to make sure he didn't hurt me."

#28 by m0nty Maybe you lot could make yourselves useful and think up something. I very much appreciate PC and the effort Morn and Gabe have put into it over the years, but I've never really gotten the sense that Crapper suggestions for the site made over the past 3 years or so would translate into anything happening. True! This is a false democracy, I tell you! "Action stars of two decades ago shot .44 bullets out of their cocks. Honestly, if me and Charles Bronson were in the same room I'd kill myself just to make sure he didn't hurt me."
Part of this is, I don't think there's any sense of the scope of things that could be asked for, how much time/money/hardware any Crapper could ask of Morn at this point, what Morn actually wants in a web community, etc. It's like trying to interpret the Constitution, or the texts of a religion, once the founders are largely unavailable. So, Morn is both Thomas Jefferson and Jesus? Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.

No, he's Gaius Baltar. "Action stars of two decades ago shot .44 bullets out of their cocks. Honestly, if me and Charles Bronson were in the same room I'd kill myself just to make sure he didn't hurt me."

Oh, wow! Caprica has been green-lit. "Action stars of two decades ago shot .44 bullets out of their cocks. Honestly, if me and Charles Bronson were in the same room I'd kill myself just to make sure he didn't hurt me."

What morn should really do is develop something else, something cool as shit, and don't worry if us elitist, grumpy bastards like it or not. Just leave this site running and be done with it. You're not going to be able to make anything that pleases a majority of us. Hell, most of us don't even know what we want. As for the topics, I've said the same thing in the past as deadlock. That IS the problem, or was. It's probably much too late now...but at one point, having current, topical topics could have generated more traffic and brought some new life to this slime fest. Whatever else happens, PC has been a bastion on the internet. It's my Cheers. My home away from home, my coping mechanism for dealing with work and life. And for that, I'm grateful it has existed. Even if it dies tomorrow. I'm trying to say I love you bastards! Even if I don't respect you. :p "Thug means never having to say you're sorry." - UTurn

I agree with what Matt says. Imagine me saying the same thing with less gay hippiness. Game Developers: Don't forget the zombie monkeys.

So with more straight hippiness? Or more sad hippiness? |

Show me message board software that successfully remembers exactly where I was in every single thread last time I was there and I'll believe this bullshit about other forums passing Planetcrap by. If I go to PC and open a thread, every other thread still remembers where I am in those threads. If I go to Neo Gaf or QT3 and open one thread, all those other threads assume I'm reading them too, and suddenly my place is lost. Other forum software sucks balls. Three things that would save Planetcrap, God fixing the submission bin so we don't need Gabe to push things through, being nicer to new people, and shutting irc down. Even one of those would be an improvement. Of course if there was a way for me to et on irc at work I probably would care more about it and less about PC. |
Of course I'm happy with anything Morn-God does, because he is all knowing and will do what is best for all that were created by him and worship him. |
I'm not convinced that the IRC channel has much impact on the site - there aren't that many people on there to really make much difference. |
I'm currently toying around with an idea for PC that would, in fact, be pretty radical. I think most of you would initially hate it. But then, after a week or five, you would possibly love it! Either way, it would be something unique and true to the drunken spirit of PC. The problem is that besides having been very, very busy over the last couple of, uh, years, I'm currently in the middle of a big fat web development burn-out crisis. I don't know how long it will last, so I don't know when there will even just be a chance of tackling the new PC. It's entirely possible that once I've moved past this feeling of being burned out, I will once again be too busy again with client work. Sigh. In other words, I can't really make any promises at the moment. All I can say is that even though I haven't been involved in the site that much for a while now, I very much appreciate that it -- and you weird people -- are still here. PC has survived all my other web endeavours. I have a strong interest in it not dying anytime soon. Who runs this place?!

For Deadlock, dammit. Invention is the Green Goblin of Necessary Lemonade.

And, for Morn, yay! Invention is the Green Goblin of Necessary Lemonade.

IRC isn't getting shut down. That's crazy talk. |
Why did I buy a car like that in the first place? Basically, I only want the cylinder head and the tail lights, the rest will go on sale piece by piece. It's a shame, because the car's body is in better shape than that of the car I'm repairing. You're worse than friggan gunp0int. What car did buy and what are you fixing, etc. If I go to PC and open a thread, every other thread still remembers where I am in those threads. If I go to Neo Gaf or QT3 and open one thread, all those other threads assume I'm reading them too, and suddenly my place is lost. They're really two different beasts. Those other forums have some many threads that it's not interesting to read them all so the forum software assumes that when you leave you read everything that was interesting. I certainly don't want to read everything piece of drivel at QT3. PC is different. Fewer topics on the front page mean that the conversations are more worthy of reading everything. Here, I want to read or skim every piece of drivel. The thing with PC is that it needs a few more people, but how to get people here? There's no marketing to speak of and people have quietly gone on to other things. I think the old meme of newbs getting flamed out is overrated as the place has generally matured over the years, but yes, a 1,000 post topic on the front page may be a little intimidating. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
The only thing wrong with PC is that the topics in the submission bin sit for too long. The changes that people are suggesting that sound like other forum software would completely ruin the site. Some of the things that people are saying are the worst parts about the site are its best parts. What other forums are you a part of where you've gotten to know your fellow posters so well over so many years? What other forum has posters that would have pulled together for such a cool project as jjohnsen's little girl's dollhouse? What other forum (okay, aside from Shacknews) has its posters meeting each other in person so often? In what other forum do you know people -- not the avatars or the profiles but the people -- like you know them here? It's that way because we've spent so many years posting and chatting. Yes, there are few of us posting and we tend to talk about the same things again and again. But we do inject new life into these conversations sometimes, and we do occasionally bring up a new and interesting topic of discussion. Think of all the political talk lately, that's been interesting and relevant. And don't friends who've known each other for years do the same thing, occasionally rehash old topics? It's not really that different. We're comfortable with each other. Even the trolls. That's not a bad thing. Bellydance!
PC IRC has been around for nearly a decade, yet people only say it's negatively impacting the site because while the site ebbs and flows with inactivity, IRC has stayed pretty constant. It's a dumb argument and people trying to make it don't realize or maybe just don't understand that the IRC channel isn't even at the level of popularity that it was 4 or 5 years ago. |^^^^^^^^^^^^ |||__

I"m not sure the IRC channel is less popular, just the people involved have changed. Game Developers: Don't forget the zombie monkeys.
I am still curious about the topic thing. What interesting, reasonably written topic in the past few years has sat there languishing? Democracy typically takes hold and I push it. Are people confusing topics sitting there with no topics actually getting written? |
You've been pushing topics lately, but before that there was bin rot and everything would be discussed in some other topic before it got through. I guess there's mass lazy inertia to topics. m0nty, back to IRC! <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
But his point is what it is. Most of the topics are just meh to begin with. |^^^^^^^^^^^^ |||__
